it's all so wonderful, the bay is so conscientious in advancing underclass garbage
bro, this article is from, like, June 2004. You're just posting this now in like, October 2011.
Sorry to tell you, but "Thizz" was generally a North Bay term which was preceded by "gurpin.'" It didn't really gain wide usage until AFTER the death of Mac Dre later in 2004 and you probably never heard it yourself until "Thizz Dance" started getting KMEL play and Mistah FAB said "thizz--that's what it is" on "Super Sic Wid It" in 2005. Don't front like you was widdit if u werent, homes.
However, in a column from 2005, I wrote about the origins of the phrase : "In the Tupac era, folks used to say "I'm doing my thug thing," which later became "thug thizzle" or just plain "thizzle." It's unclear, however, when thizzle -- a vague term that could refer to almost any action -- became thizz, which has a much more specific, drug-oriented meaning... Mac Dre, in fact, might've been first to comment on the phenomenon back in 2002, when he released the Thizzelle Washington album, whose cover artwork featured crazy psychedelic swirls."
So there you have it.
yeah, you have all that, but no THIZZ? Ahem?

question, is mateel a community center or a fiefdom? people living outside of humboldt dont care about all the politics and inflighting, they just want to hear good music. y'all need to squash this bitterness and make it so that everybody wins.
hey anonymous2, are you sure you have all the facts? you talk about babylon rising, but the only reason the two sides didnt settle is the greed of Mateel's lawyers, who turned down a $220k-per-year deal because they were holding out for $300,000. every year. for sitting back and doing nothing. this is a documented fact.
act like righteous hippies all you want, but dont think that jah dont see you or that he dont know wha'gwan.

Reggae On The River Rises From The Ashes & Lands In Benbow July 19
(Redway, CA July 11, 2008): Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, on Saturday, July 19th, the Mateel Community Center will revive Reggae on the River as a single-day, roots reggae and world music celebration at Benbow Lake State Recreation Area in southern Humboldt. A transitional year for the event, with issues still unresolved in the festivals ongoing legal dispute, Reggae on the River 08 will be an in-house production offered in a keep-the-name-alive-forever spirit, with hopes to return the festival to 3 day event that will again support the work of both community non-profits and the Mateel Community Center.
In keeping with the paired down theme, the festival will eschew top heavy headliners to feature a deep and top class billing of international talent including The Wailing Souls, Culture with Kenyatta Hill, Katchafire, Warrior King, Sister I-Live, Stevie Culture, and Afromassive. Additionally, the event will offer vendors, a childrens area, delicious food and drink, a beer & wine bar, and plenty of irie vibes on the beautiful shores of the Eel River in Benbow Lake S.R.A.
Dont miss this chance to support the work of MCC while helping keep Reggae on the River alive. Tickets are available online at www.inticketing.com and at the usual Humboldt and Mendocino County outlets for $50 advance. Visit either www.mateel.org or www.reggaeontheriver.com for further festival information and dont miss the return of Reggae on the River at Benbow Lake State Recreation Area on Saturday, July 19. Gates open at 11am and music starts at 11:30am. Camping is available on a first come, first served basis in both Benbow Lake and Richardson Grove campgrounds by calling (800) 444-7275.
oh, good catch.
sorry about that.
the point remains the same, though: Viacom also owns BET.
You're getting your Awards Shows mixed up. The BET Hip Hop Awards was held in Atlanta a week after the VH1 Hip Hop Honors, which was in New York. TIP was arrested in the ATL.
Good sh*t Eric!!! Gald to see your expertise of music on the pages!! You got to live it to know it.....
"Breezy" isn't a variant of bitch--or at least I've only ever heard "beezy."
F ALL YOU MATEEL ASSHOLES!!! In all your efforts to show how "babylon" PP and Dimmick you forgot about us~~ The folks that fork over $200 + dollars each year to haul up to Humboldt and pump god know how much $$ into your economy. We just want a quality reggae show and a place to set up camp and you want us choose sides?? The simple fact is that it comes down to $$ on both sides and when a couple million dollars is at stake people get shady...dreadlocks or not.! So you can keep on "shining" your version of the light but its fallin on deaf ears. As soon as People Productins incorporated you should've gotten a contractual agreements. And lets not forget that its Tom Dimmicks LAND - not yours or PP and he has the right to let whoever he wants on his land.
Reggae Rising was a COMPLETE SUCCESS!!!! Best vibe in years. They had onsite sheriffs keepin the tweakers sellin BS in line. ONward Reggae Rising!!!!
the bay area has more politically conscious artists then you can shake a stick at, literally hundreds of them in fact. the problem is that local publications like the East Bay Express, The Bay Guardian, SF Weekly, et al don't give us any coverage *at all*, the corporate radio stations won't play our music because we won't sell booze and beamers for them, and the half-dozen or so left-coast independent hippie stations aren't tryna play hip hop. KPFA is the only real exception to that, but as much as I appreciate T-Kash's show, even he's not tryna play the street-level artists and in any case 1 show in the entire bay area just isn't enough. The only stations, in fact, that play real local hip hop are college stations like KSCU (props to The Underground Sound!), but their signal doesn't reach very far and isn't very good quality. Add to that the fact that the record industry is absolutely not checking for conscious artists and it's not hard to see why most of the people who should be fans don't even know the scene exists.
It's kinda pathetic, really. We've got one of the biggest conscious hip hop scenes in the country in terms of number of artists and shows right here in the bay area, and the only hip hop that can get any coverage in our local publications is on some hyphy bullshit. I mean, I'm not tryna brag here, but my last two albums have each had over 100,000 downloads from all over the planet and earlier this year Donegal Press described me as "without a doubt one of the hottest rappers in the underground hip-hop scene today"; but I STILL get no love from publications right here in the bay area where I've lived my whole life. Now that could be because I don't look they way they expect politically conscious hip hop artists to look, but mostly I think it's just cuz the local media is asleep at the wheel.
It's simple really, corporations control the means of communication in America and they decide who's gonna blow up and who's gonna get stuck in the underground forever. And they'd rather flood the airwaves with this same old minstrel show over and over again then risk promoting intelligent artists who talk about real issues in their lyrics and might piss off advertisers by complaining about the way nike uses slave labor or the way companies that push alcohol explicitly target poor communities and people of color or the butchery behind the diamond industry or a million other issues. We're not on the air because we're dangerous. But that's no excuse for local print publications that claim to be 'progressive' to leave us out of their pages.
this is about the biggest b.s. story I have ever read. How many backstage passes to the event did the stooge receive who wrote this? Tom Dimmick and Carol Bruno dont care about the music, they care about lining their pockets with money, what a shame they ripped off reggae on the river and the mateel community center. Faithful people do not believe this b.s.! Tom Dimmick is a profiteering land owner that does not understand why we came to the real festival, reggae on the river, may the Mateel prevail against babylon rising!!!!
You know, the only thing that will satisfy those illiterate natty head weed smoking dunce DeeJays is blood and more blood, the blood of all those who are different. Is this really 2007, a new millenium? Beenie and those other 'beings' passing as humans deserve to live a thousand years ago in a cave with their fellow cavemen. What if we said Murder and KIll all people who screwed anyone else except their wives or girlfriends? Huh? Huh?Hey Beeni, hey Kartel, hey ele, hey Capelton, hey TOK, hey bounti, hey all you who spew murder lyrics and encourage violence ~ You going to reap what you sow, watch.Yuh tink this is any way to make a living, shouting and spitting your nasty spit into a microphone and asking decent people to buy it.Naw rasta. Dat naw goh work!!!Is too long we law abiding decent people allow you "dirty cant- read cant -write dont bade since last week" so called musicians to infect the minds of our young teens. Is pure nastiness and violence you can sing about, from morning till night, and you better stop referring to women as "gal". Damn *$#@! feisty and disrespectful. Aye Beenie, when is the last time you look in a mirror? Same for many of you DJ's.You are a disgrace to Jamaica, you make us ashamed to be J'cans.I hope the world knows that you DO NOT represent us~ you are just a few who go on stage and because of the times we live in are able to UNFORTUNATELY reap the financial rewards. If it were for me your so called 'music ( HA!) would sit on the store shelves till dem get cobweb. You all have a nerve to fire bun gays while you carrying on with all sorts of nastiness at yuh yard! How much pickney onnu have? 10? 20? You must think is rabbits you raising. You are all morally bankrupt and short on other qualities necessary to make a positive or meaning full contribution to society.Ah yuh do is smoke the blasted stinking ganja.Like you can afford to kill the few brain cells you have!At least some of you were made to swallow your pride and sign the 'document'.The fact that you lie about it is irrelevant. The fact is YOU SIGNED IT AND YOU KNOW IN YOUR HEART YOU DID.So in the end you have to hug up the same Gays & lesbians in order to make a living, all who have the same rights as you to exist WITHOUT fearing they will be MURDERED,courtesy of you and your nasty music. So if you want to keep driving your bashy Bimmer and Hummer, you better re think your disgusting behaviour and start penning violence free lyrics, or else you going to soon be driving a 1995 Toyota Corolla! So Boom Bye Bye innaYOUR head assholes!
Nice Work Eric,
Your Two Backstage Passes Are In The Mail, Enjoy The Show! Great Propaganda!
Many of Humboldt county's non- profit organizations rely on having a food booth at "Reggae on the River" as part of their yearly income. Many local non profits, including schools, volunteer fire departments, the community radio station, enviromental groups, feel so strongly that this years reggae festival is unethical, have chosen to stand in solidarity with Mateel Community Center by not having a food booth at the festival this year.
