Re: “Asian Seniors Misled About Lake Merritt Luxury Tower

The East Bay Express unfortunately has a dubious distinction of misleading, and bad bias reporting practices. Oakland has a huge budget deficit and should sell this parcel to the HIGHEST bidder. How can we justify building more subsidized housing especially on our prime real estate, I certainly don't think most TAX paying Oakland citizens want to pay for another low income housing project on this prime parcel.

Re: “Asian Seniors Misled About Lake Merritt Luxury Tower

I knew upon arrival at City Hall that this group of Asian immigrants could not possibly afford the projected $3100 per month rent. I have lived in the neighborhood since 1947, I taught ESL in the neighborhood for 25 years, I knew something was awry when I spoke to the Burmese mother with a small baby carrying a sign and she did not speak much English. The City is notorious for not providing language access for public meetings, especially in informing residents In written form who will be impacted by public policy.

Yes, the developer made his appeal and made an effort to reach out to the "engaged public". Yes, we need a tax base to bolster City coffers. Yes, there are Oaklanders who can afford the luxury units as we face a serious housing shortage, especially for seniors, many long term residents who have lived in stable housing now in jeopardy with the many developments sprouting throughout the neighborhoods around Lake Merritt. Yes, Oakland is a desirable alternative to SF's out of control housing crisis.

Oakland is at a crossroads. Perhaps as it was after the SF 1906 Earthquake. In 2015, what will the City do with all of us, longtime neighbors included, who want to stay?

I agree with the findings of this article. Yelp should be shut down and put out of business.

Re: “Update: West Oakland Community Garden Declares Victory for Now

You can't just take a person's land they bought and pay taxes on. After trespassing, starting a campaign of lies about how the lot was maintained, now they want to force the sale of the land at discount? Talk about an injustice. The owner has payed $80k+ in property taxes over 10 years and now the city won't defend his property rights? This is wrong on so many levels. I see no justice in any of it.

Re: “Asian Seniors Misled About Lake Merritt Luxury Tower

So one the one side we have hearsay about what these seniors were told, on the other side we have the CEO of urban core providing evidence the buildings were advertised as market rate. So EBX decides to focus on the hearsay and state that seniors were misled as fact in their headline. It's insulting that EBX consistently relies on EBX readers to have more emotion than intelligence.

Where was the independent translator to confirm what the seniors were told? If the seniors declined on speak, where is the statement that the seniors declined to be interviewed (as the EBX is always sure to point out when whichever villain in their story declines to be interviewed, insinuating they have something to hide)

Is it too much to expect some actual reporting?

Re: “Asian Seniors Misled About Lake Merritt Luxury Tower

The entire context for this very bad land use decision by the City of Oakland should be on full blast. This is a bad project on many levels. The behind the scene process that allowed the parcel to be controlled by this group is problematic. The bad policy of using public land for private profits to the exclusion of affordable housing and the total violation of housing policy outlined in the City's own Housing Element is clear. How can a Planning Commission approve this project and at the very next meeting hold a public hearing to discuss the Housing Element. A Housing Element that is mandated to include strategies for building affordable housing. Are you kidding me? Of course the Asian seniors were bused to the meeting and given incorrect information leading them to support the project against their own best interest. The project proponent has history in San Francisco. This is a classic Rose Pak move used to intimidate and control the politics of the Asian community to the benefit of her cronies. We don't need these kind of tactics in Oakland and it speaks volumes about the integrity of the developers. Mayor Schaaf should be ashamed to have her name associated with this kind of activity. Even her old boss, Ygnacio De la Fuente never stooped this low to get a project approved.

Re: “A Minor Victory Against Gentrification in West Oakland

Are not the members of Qilombo engaging in gentrification by converting a "dilapidated, needle-strewn lot" into a community garden ?

This article seems to be a bit hypocritical to me. The owner, Yi, appears prepared to sell the lot if Qilombo wish to buy it. If Qilombo do not have sufficient funds and it's considered important to the city to gentrify this land then perhaps Oakland city council could buy it from Yi using the tax money we pay, and the city could gift the land to Qilombo.

Re: “Update: West Oakland Community Garden Declares Victory for Now

"They had Oakland-based civil rights lawyer Yolanda Huang write a letter to various Oakland city officials on Afrika Town’s behalf, urging the city not to use police force in what she considered to be a civil dispute"

It's not a civil dispute. They don't have a lease, they never had a lease, they're trespassing, which is a crime.

They also painted the sidewalk on two blocks and many neighboring buildings with African nationalist colors without permission from the city or the building owners. They put up signs on lamp posts that say "AfrikaTown" in front of several businesses that are neither owned or operated by African Americans.

The whole thing is incredibly disrespectful to the neighborhood.

Re: “East Bay Musician Emilio Nevarez Killed By Stray Bullet After Downtown Oakland Gig

Condolences to the family of the young man who lost his life of innocence. Pointing the finger at the businesses will not change the situation. It's selfish, individuals who do not care about or have respect for one another. I was attending the show at the Golden Bull with a friend this night & when I went out for a smoke break (which is just in front of the place) and a rough neck tough guy and an african american guy were exchanging words based on the rough neck being belligerent and deragatory & the african american guy left as I was stomping out my cigarette. I went back into the show & sometime later we see the victim run inside yelling & bleeding & back outside. Later on you hear this tough neck guy saying "It was intended for me but he shot my friend". I attend a lot of meetings and am in a lot of groups for community peace in the area and it is things like that being said & done that we ALL need to come together as a COMMUNITY or the hate will continue back & fourth.
STOP THE VIOLENCE!!!!

I've stated with tongue in cheek that since they've declared war, that after we've won, War Crimes Trials should be considered for those who have abused their authority to persecute those who've done no harm. Well my tongue is no longer in my cheek. Their are consequences to our actions. Accountability is in order for those who cause needless harm.

Re: “Monday Must Reads: County Supes Took Cash from Wind Turbine Operator; California Groundwater Depletion Worsens

Personally, I doubt that the $$ had any real impact on that 3:2 vote. I think it had more to do with unions, jobs, and a poor reading/understanding of the evidence. This issue should be re-visited for another hearing and vote. Supervisor Miley has said he's willing.
