Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
There will be trouble. The left can't take the pressure and will act out. WATCH......
Yet again, the tabloid carpet bagger submits half the story and the paper across the bay has more information; names names and deals with specific details. The tabloid king simply wags his finger:
This sentence doesn't make any sense:
"Oscar Edwards saw all of the shiny new high-rise apartment buildings planned for Downtown Oakland and figured the writing was on the wall: There probably wasnt much of a future in running a nightclub in that neighborhood."
Why would you think a nightclub doesn't have a future when a ton of new people are about to move in nearby? If anything it probably means a lot more business.
Oakland simply does not do "proactive." What we do, as a city, is inevitably reactive.
People are hurt in ways that could be affected by good policy. It makes the news. Then city hall responds. Later, far too often, nothing has been done.
Leadership? Not our strong point.
A violence-prevention department to oversee Human Services and Oakland Police? Simply magnificent thinking!
Human Services function and policy are under the purview of the Mayor, the Administrator and the City Council. OPD likewise with the addition of an amalgamation of committees and consultants potentially under the umbrella of the eventually-to-be Police Commission.
Create yet another bureacracy to oversee the failures of two existing dysfunctional bureaucracies? Sure, why not?
By the way we have a Public Ethics Commission which supposedly looks over all city officials and functions. I know the name--I have never seen any evidence that it breathes.
We are still accepting signatures on our petition through 4 pm Monday 4/10 voicing our concerns to City of Oakland planning commission and city council regarding the impact of Golden Road on the neighborhood in terms of noise, traffic, parking and pushing small local brewers out: https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/golden-road-Temescal
What many don't see is the spate of fires are not just apartments, or empty warehouses. The FedEx truck into the students from LAUSD killed ten, five Filipino nurses on the San Mateo Bridge, the unfinished Mission Bay Fire in SF, the deadly San Bruno Fire, the Deadly Walnut Creek Explosion in 2004 and a slew of fires affecting restaurants in the East Bay, Berkeley and SF. Walnut Creek lost Piedmont Lumber and La Virage, Wendy's and many others.
One of the Kim brothers is a long time friend and I was in that building in 1995. The reality is it appears they lost control of the building with squatters and the like. From what I read the third floor was no-mans land.
The fire officials and the codes they use need to adjust tactics. I've operated large wood based operations - I never would lack fire extinguishers or fire suppression. The reality is who was in control, who was in the building when this or that happened etc.
My personal arson story is horrific where I went to the Alameda District attorneys and met with two investigators about the Ghost Fire where I knew several vics via music. I met some of the E-music at local events, fascinating how they make the sounds come together.
What I told them was I have an arsonist following me. They didn't believe me but trust me you're see me at an Oakland council meeting as I went to the Mayors Office with my blogs.
My labels are about Arson, Murders and Explosions
I have postings with tags like The SERIAL ARSONIST
It gets personal as I knew Berkeley Fireman Tony Nunes quite well. His friend Bat Chief John Riley died in the Oakland Fire.
The Kim brother that's been a friend in the 80s was almost killed in the Parkwoods that exploded behind him in the Oakland Firestorm in 1991. I found videos posted showing Parkwoods burning to the ground as he's leaving.
How does one class get ensnared two of three deadliest fires? They don't they are being targeted like I've been tageted.
Dig in and read.
I have lost everything, my family, houses, assets and my sons in connection to the Police Scandal in the East Bay now six years old.
I have beaten many times but I have been broken, there is a difference.
Unbelievable, and yet completely and utterly in line with the way this city operates. The underserved remain underserved and worse. Not sexy enough for the mayor to hold a press conference, and not enough PR kickback for the sports teams to kick-in a few dollars. Disgraceful.
Glad the East Bay Express reports on this issue. Keep it up!
The whole level of resources being committed to this issue is ridiculous. Has the City forgotten the multiple deadly fires killing dozens of people? And somehow the code enforcement resources of the city cannot bring those monstrosities into safe compliance and they have staff on Chard Patrol duty? (Yeh I know Planning and Building Code enforcement staff are not fire inspectors but fire code violations are very closely related to building violations. We need to put the Chard Patrol staff on loan to the Fire Department to work on core life safety inspections for the next couple years).
city needs to raise money and getting pretty desparate
The comment by "Sammy Jo" above is a joke. It is undoubtedly one of the opposition posing as her. Way to sink even lower. Funny thing is, most people seeing this article know who you are and could list the names next to many of those mean-spirited quotes. The real Sammy Jo, is much more thoughtful and caring for all residents of Dublin and beyond. Oh, and the Berkeley comment is clear evidence of an imposter as it's not the first time it has been said in an effort to discredit Sammy Jo and Sammy Jo would never say that. Finally, if all the Dublin opposition to sanctuary city would take just a few minutes to actually listen and read, you will find all your yelling and screaming against a sanctuary effort is misplaced, as that has nothing to do with Sammy Jo's proposal to council.
Hi, I am an out of state resident, and I'm visiting San Fransisco for 10 days. I was hopping to get a medical card here, I am over 21, a US citizen and I have back pains and insomnia. If i don't have proof of address for myself but my mom lives here, is there anyway I could get a mmj card within the next couple of days?
I live in Dublin and I see no reason to have a Sanctuary City at all. We have Federal and state laws that are in place and we don't need this in the city of Dublin. We don't need this town to be another Berkeley.
I am so bummed. I have fond memories of my first child playing on the piano, reading books, and grabbing a sandwich/cuppa joe at this shop. We really felt welcomed here. Happy to hear owner is retiring, though, hope he enjoys this time. Best of luck!
I think Oakland has improved in many ways in the last 15 years from the un documented prople living here.
I think those Dubliners should ask themselves who their housekeepers, cooks and gardeners are and where do they live.
It is not surprising in the current national climate that such ignorance and fear exists in Dublin. It exists in many other places, even in this liberal bastion of northern California. Look at the false narrative coming from the President. "We are going to get the really bad guys" and all of the drug problems are coming from those "other" people south of the border. The reality is that they are destroying families by rounding up working tax paying dads, grandmothers and single moms. Kids should not be traumatized fearing disappearance of a parent as a result of them running a stop sign on the way to work. The fact is that the opioid crisis is driven by greedy big pharma and the health care system, not immigrants or people from the hood named Jamal. Those people south of the border are the ones who are the silent exploited engine that makes the economy work for you. The cost of fruits and vegetables on your table, the price you pay when you go out to dinner, the reason you get those ten dollar tee shirts at WalMart. It is all because the system exploits immigrants for our benefit. Now we as a nation want to punish them when many are just hard working folks trying to have a better life for their kids, just like you. There are 30,000 acres of flat undeveloped land adjacent to Dublin in N. Livermore. The reason it is undeveloped is because of the same hate and fear described in this article. The people of Livermore believe that if developed, much of it would be affordable housing and that would bring an influx of those scary and dangerous "others". The people of Dublin should realize that being a sanctuary city makes your community safer not more dangerous. Stop being stupid.
Libby Schaff DOES NOT care about you.
Don't March, Don't Plead, Don't Hope.

BACK AGAINST DISPLACEMENT.
Or do nothing at all.
Many thanks to everyone who has stepped up so far to help the San Pablo fire victims, including our first responders, housing staff, the Oakland Warehouse Coalition, and multiple faith leaders and Congregations. And, I wanted to share an UPDATE: There is now a method to make Tax-Deductible contributions online to help the unmet needs of those who have been displaced. Thanks to First Presbyterian Church of Oakland for setting this up. To make a tax deductible contribution, visit:
@Anika, if what you said were correct (which is not borne out by copious evidence), then the property owner could have still made repairs anytime prior to the new provisions coming in on February 2017. And had there truly been an inability for the property owner to make the necessary repairs and still realize a positive net operating income, he could have petitioned for a hardship waiver. As the article states, allegedly there were numerous code complaints from tenants over a number of years, but the property owner elected to do nothing.
