Re: “New Lawsuit Alleges Oakland Police Conspiracy to Cover Up Home Invasion by Drunk Cops

Does anyone seriously think that we don't need a civilian oversight police commission? Even under a Federal judge, these shenanigans continue unabated. Beyond unacceptable. Yes on Measure LL! www.yesonll.com

Re: “Expert: You Don't Have to Be a State Resident to Get Medical Marijuana In California Right Now

Not only do I have a doctors recommendation with an out of state ID, but am now a business owner for the legal and taxable sale of medical marijuana in the state of California and legally provide patients with mmj.
It's so funny, yet sad (therein lies the tragedy) to go into a dispensary and be turned away because of my out of state ID only to turn around set up an appt with the owner to become a VENDOR for them...
The irony is so thick I couldn't even vape it

Re: “Town Business: Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center to Become Private Offices

There are so many excellent deficiencies for which to criticize me, certainly, but there's not much I can do about my age, Max! (I'll try not to taunt you as you gain in years yourself. May your hair never grey, your paunch never paunch, your steps never slow, your youngers never rag on you.) Had it not been for some of us stupid aged ones, a cathedral would loom in front of the auditorium today.

Re: “Oakland Police Union Spending Thousands on Effort to Unseat Councilmembers Kalb and Gallo

The problem of understaffing of police officers in Oakland has been a decades long problem. And so has the problem of accountability. The recent scandal in OPD and it's depth have proven once again the department is incapable of holding its own officers accountable. And in an era of growing militarization of police departments, it is more incumbent than ever to retain civilian control and monitoring of our nation's police forces. Oakland with all its problems is no exception. Police now have growing tools to surveil all residents and politicians. IMO OPD has always had too much sway over Oakland's politicians and residents. It is incumbent for the preservation of our democracy and republic that police departments be held accountable by civilian police review boards and commissions. Dan Kalb has shown great courage and integrity in bringing this measure along with Noel Gallo. He deserves the full support of his district and the entire city's residents.

Re: “Town Business: Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center to Become Private Offices

Naomi says "probably not tech offices". What garbage.

Orton is proposing market rate office space in what will be the single most prestigious and ostentatious office address in the City of Oakland, if not the entire East Bay.

Who, besides tech companies, has the excess capital to throw at that kind of office space? Maybe Naomi is telling the truth, maybe it will be hedge funds instead of tech offices. Oh great, as if that makes the destruction of the most historic venue in Oakland any less atrocious.

Watch in the coming weeks and months as Naomi and the other aging members of the Me Generation in her clique try to spin this disaster as something good for Oakland.

Their idea of history is to polish up old buildings so that grey haired folks in straw hats can go on walking tours and talk about architectural details. Real historic preservation would be preserving this building as public venue that it was intended to be when Oakland taxpayers approved a bond to build it over 100 years ago.

Actually, probably NOT tech offices. This story needs some follow-up.

Re: “Town Business: Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center to Become Private Offices

The deal is a ground lease. The money Oakland will receive for the lease is a public good which will pay for social programs, schools, public safety, infrastructure, etc. I think the redevelopment plan is amazing. It leaves most of the building as it is and brings the property back to a remarkable community asset. Take a look: http://www.theoaklandcivic.com Cheer-up.

Please god, anything but more tech offices...

Re: “Five Memorable Rants from Kanye West's Concert Last Night In Oakland

For the same amount of money, you could see three underground shows where the artists give it 100% because they have something to prove, rather than one mainstream show where some overstuffed ego phones it in and coasts on their fame. Plus you'll actually be able to see and hear the artists doing their thing on stage, rather than being lost in an endless sea of phone screens.

Skip Kanye. Skip Beyonce. Skip all that Top 40 shit. You've heard it all already! You can do better in the Bay Area.

Re: “Popular Fremont Hiking Spot for Selfies Prompts Parking Lot on Sacred Land

So many people want to take the same unimaginative "look I climbed a hill" selfie that there's now a LINE for the photo op? Now that's just sad.

Re: “Town Business: Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center to Become Private Offices

Orten is developing it, but who will own it? Will the city still own all or part of it, and be collecting the income it eventually generates? If not, why not? If it's being leased to the developer, it should be a limited number of years before the city controls it again.

Would've been a great place to put the main branch of the library, or expand the museum, or make it part of Laney College, or Oakland sports and rec dept facility or.... But, alas, no money for better uses...

Oh my god, yes, jab Lincoln... I mean he knew he was going to be assassinated and should have made better plans to bring equality to former slaves. Kanye, please.

Re: “Town Business: Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center to Become Private Offices

Such a sad place to arrive at, just selling any soul left to new office uses, so sad to see this just turn into class a drivel.

Re: “Town Business: Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center to Become Private Offices

I can't believe Oakland will loose this wonderful resource. Over the I years I've seen concerts, High School basketball and roller derby games and quarter midge auto races (my oldest sister was queen of the race in 1959). I love many of the change Oakland is currently experiencing. However, we need to preserve our history not throw it away.

Re: “Town Business: Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center to Become Private Offices

"The other two-thirds of new office space built in the converted Kaiser Center auditorium side of the building will be rented at market rates as general commercial office space. Likely tenants include tech companies, attorneys, and similar professional firms."

...as was the plan from the start. When no (local) arts organizations come forward to rent the class A office space, as it was advertised, it will be 100% market rate and another public asset will be privatized. The function, legacy and soul will be lost forever...as was the plan from the start.

Re: “Town Business: Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center to Become Private Offices

View-corridor obsessives like OHA, Naomi and James Vann lobbied against the alternate, convention preservation, new hotel tower option and this is what we're left with.

Nice.

Is Darwin still gonna beat that "NIMBYs Dont Exist" drum now that even his allies worked so tirelessly to get us here?

@ Leif Bierer: You're *joking*, right?! Transferring--sale, sharing, etc--*any* quantity of weed--even passing a joint--to *anybody*, including those poor "disabled veterans" you're *all* about, is presently a *felony* outside of a medical collective/cooperative; after 64, sharing up to an ounce between any other adult is completely legal, and over an ounce is only a misdemeanor!

Seriously, you tools really ought to look this stuff up *before* you post it ... !
