Re: “Josephine Seeks to Expand Homemade Food Legislation

This is a really neat idea. Getting a home cooked meal and meeting some great folks is a very original concept. The approach of assisting in the making of regulations as to opposing it will be very interesting to see how it plays out.

Re: “Exploiting Inmates

This kind of theft is the sort of conduct, theft and overt abuse of the weak, that prisoners are locked up for.

Re: “BART Police Quietly Installed License Plate Surveillance Cameras at Oakland Station

"...for parking fee collection"

Much like the red light camera racket, this is an almost pure parking ticket play. The "Homeland Security" and "wanted criminal" riffs are the cover. If the system were for serious threats only, it would be so restricted. Thus is privacy sacrificed for under-funded pensions.

Re: “More Discriminatory Hiring Signs In Berkeley

ThatguyJM, being comfortable speaking English and fluently reading English are two different things. Plenty of bilingual men and women who can't fill out an application in English could perform the job of server.

Re: “More Discriminatory Hiring Signs In Berkeley

So what happens when Spanish-only speaking servers and hostesses are hired? How will they communicate with the customers? Should it only be in English only so to not offend any particular race? I can see someone NOT Spanish speaking be offended that they were not informed (Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Brazilian, etc). Let's be inclusive of all races and not exclusive.

Re: “Access Denied

Eric Friedman kicked me off next door for standing up for the homeless and calling out racism on the site. I think if a website wants to be a community resource then there should be some sort of standards of membership - not just that snotty Eric Friedman doesn't like to be called out on his privilege. You shouldn't have to politely tolerate hate speech against the poor and non-whites to be able to monitor what is going on on NextDoor. Friedman is going to wind up costing Nirav Tolia a lot of money.

Re: “Reverse Redlining Won't Fix Oakland's Housing Crisis

Carlon, THANK YOU for pointing out the lack of details and facts on evictions. This is nothing but intentional misrepresentation by the author. Similar to so-called writers who say that Ellis Act evictions are skyrocketing because they're going up 60% when in fact the number is derived from a movement of 10 to 16 (I used simple numbers for illustration purposes only).

Yes Oakland, let's follow policies that have proven not to work just so you can pander to a certain demographic and say you've done something.

Re: “Access Denied

Well, all of those bogus "crime" reports were not useful anyway, and needed to go, along with the racist gossip environment they spawned.

I am proud of Oakland ND conversations on homelessness. Every time some busybody got "concerned" about homeless persons there were replies about services referrals and compassion that stopped the conversation from going the way the Berkeley ones seem to be going.

It is very true that "Leads" on Next Door are the biggest problem they have. No one knows how/why they are chosen, and even after they got more in my neighborhood, they are overwhelmingly white and generaly not long term residents. Fortunately, they seem to be pretty hands off and transparent in my neighborhood, it's just so tone deaf to not have any community leaders of color as leads. It is a thankless job, however, and I do know that persons of color have been asked and declined the "privilege."

Re: “Reverse Redlining Won't Fix Oakland's Housing Crisis

Mr. Murray makes too many wrong conclusions and doesn't even mention how many residents, like myself, are living here affordably because of rent control.

I doubt that so-called impact fees will help. I suspect it will make matters worse. Most of the new housing that I have been witnessing being built does not displace low income people. This housing is being built where no housing was before. New market rate housing is not the cause of rent increases in the older non-rent-controlled housing stock, on the contrary, it should relieve the upward price pressure somewhat as residents leave the older less nice housing and move into the new housing. The housing they left is now available for someone else.

The real problem is that there are too many jobs in this area and companies and their workers are not willing to move into the areas of the state, or in other states, where land is cheap and plentiful. This is the price we pay to be in the beautiful Bay Area.

Re: “Caltrans and CHP Oust Homeless from Camp in Pouring Rain in Oakland

Caltrans IS EVIL!! they laugh while tossing away everything. Once in the pouring rain last year, they held me back while making my boyfriend ( who was ill and could barely walk drag our tent by himself!! They REFUSED to let me help him. Then laughed while trashing EVERYTHING ELSE. Guess in the rain we were lucvky to have. Tent still! But no blankets or dry clothes though. That was compacted
And as for them keeping our essentials. Yes they're SUPPOSED to keep them for up to 90 days. But they don't. They claim they can't keep out tents because they're a "biohazard. "

Re: “Access Denied

"Many debates on Nextdoor about homeless people revolve around what to do about Berkeley's homeless problem, but the debates rarely include input from homeless community members themselves."

This reflects my experience on Nextdoor. Not all posts about the homeless are negative, but the homeless are excluded from all posts. I hope Nextdoor can address the situation to better include all of our neighbors, not just the ones with roofs over their heads.

Re: “The Richest One Percent Moves to Kill Medical Marijuana in Florida — Again

Everyone should stop working stop paying taxes and stop voting and just see what happens, seems these rich pigs that try and control democracy need to be stopped and tossed under the rug and then we can all piss on the rug ✌🏻️Marijuwana should be fully legalized and farmed by farmers and taxed then we could do some work with our nation more jobs and more money for a niev government 👍🏻

Re: “Access Denied

Being a taxpayer or not being a taxpayer has nothing to do with Next Door, a privately owned entity that is positioning itself to make huge sums of money. Private websites have nothing to do with rights. And since when do rights only accrue to taxpayers? All humans have rights and human rights are never dependent on whether or not someone pays taxes.
