Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
The deal is a ground lease. The money Oakland will receive for the lease is a public good which will pay for social programs, schools, public safety, infrastructure, etc. I think the redevelopment plan is amazing. It leaves most of the building as it is and brings the property back to a remarkable community asset. Take a look: http://www.theoaklandcivic.com Cheer-up.
Please god, anything but more tech offices...
For the same amount of money, you could see three underground shows where the artists give it 100% because they have something to prove, rather than one mainstream show where some overstuffed ego phones it in and coasts on their fame. Plus you'll actually be able to see and hear the artists doing their thing on stage, rather than being lost in an endless sea of phone screens.
Skip Kanye. Skip Beyonce. Skip all that Top 40 shit. You've heard it all already! You can do better in the Bay Area.
So many people want to take the same unimaginative "look I climbed a hill" selfie that there's now a LINE for the photo op? Now that's just sad.
My names are Flora Mills and i am a single parent from Washington Dc USA; When i was seeking for a loan, i was scammed several times before i met a friend who directed me to Global Loan Firm . Initially i was afraid to go into the operation but my friend advised me to apply that she also obtained her loan from the company when she needed an urgent loan for business and clearing of debts. Then i took the challenge which actually worked out for me without any form of credit check, no cosigner, no collateral and for just 3% interest rate i got a loan of $80,000 after paying the fee they asked for. Since then i have decided to publish them all over for those who need a loan. I have been scammed of $5,450 till i met this company that is also located in USA who saved me out of debt and my story has changed today. You can contact them via Email: firstname.lastname@example.org and i assure you that you will testify just as i am doing now

Orten is developing it, but who will own it? Will the city still own all or part of it, and be collecting the income it eventually generates? If not, why not? If it's being leased to the developer, it should be a limited number of years before the city controls it again.
Would've been a great place to put the main branch of the library, or expand the museum, or make it part of Laney College, or Oakland sports and rec dept facility or.... But, alas, no money for better uses...
Oh my god, yes, jab Lincoln... I mean he knew he was going to be assassinated and should have made better plans to bring equality to former slaves. Kanye, please.
Such a sad place to arrive at, just selling any soul left to new office uses, so sad to see this just turn into class a drivel.
I can't believe Oakland will loose this wonderful resource. Over the I years I've seen concerts, High School basketball and roller derby games and quarter midge auto races (my oldest sister was queen of the race in 1959). I love many of the change Oakland is currently experiencing. However, we need to preserve our history not throw it away.
"The other two-thirds of new office space built in the converted Kaiser Center auditorium side of the building will be rented at market rates as general commercial office space. Likely tenants include tech companies, attorneys, and similar professional firms."
...as was the plan from the start. When no (local) arts organizations come forward to rent the class A office space, as it was advertised, it will be 100% market rate and another public asset will be privatized. The function, legacy and soul will be lost forever...as was the plan from the start.
View-corridor obsessives like OHA, Naomi and James Vann lobbied against the alternate, convention preservation, new hotel tower option and this is what we're left with.
Is Darwin still gonna beat that "NIMBYs Dont Exist" drum now that even his allies worked so tirelessly to get us here?
@ Leif Bierer: You're *joking*, right?! Transferring--sale, sharing, etc--*any* quantity of weed--even passing a joint--to *anybody*, including those poor "disabled veterans" you're *all* about, is presently a *felony* outside of a medical collective/cooperative; after 64, sharing up to an ounce between any other adult is completely legal, and over an ounce is only a misdemeanor!
Seriously, you tools really ought to look this stuff up *before* you post it ... !

Public land for private good.
As someone who's life has been so impacted positively by CBD Oil with a skosh of THC, I'm encouraged that these issues are being addressed.
Prop 64 improves things exponentially for everyone, including patients. - Most people exaggerate the small protection given by Prop 215. It does not make marijuana possession legal, and does not prevent ticketing arrest and jail. - It is ONLY an affirmative defense that can be used in court after you are arrested and it may or may not work.
Prop 64 ends all illegality of one ounce of marijuana and six plants growing in the home. That changes everything. It will cause the police not to care or be interested in anyone's marijuana.
As for disabled, needy veterans, under Prop 64, you can give any adult over 21 up to an ounce also. I'm sure there are plenty of people - in the industry and out - who would happily fill that need.
@miles Monroe I'll name one, how about donating cannabis to a disabled veteran that can't grow his own medicine?
The "scandal" consists of the actions of perhaps five OPD police, tried in the media, on a force of 700-some officers. Activists who hate OPD so much that they do not care about the public safety of 400,000 city residents are the core supporters of measure LL. They want City positions, on a new political platform, with staff paid at our expense. No on LL.
