Re: “Oakland’s Most Iconic Tree Is Named After A Socialist Firebrand: Jack London (Of Course)

Jack London earned a reputation early on as the "Boy Socialist" and for the most part he was all talk. He was in favor of women's sufferage but was patriarchal toward the two women who were his wives. Later, he lived the life of a gentleman farmer at Beauty Ranch. He was like most people whose actions fall short of their words.

Re: “Lake Merritt's Weird, Polluted — And Stinky — Legacy

10th St. bridge is being rebuilt, and the aperture much widened. Now the main barrier is the 7th St. bridge, at the floodgates. County-operated, the idea was to prevent a recurrence of disastrous floods such as 1962-- https://localwiki.org/oakland/Lake_Merritt…. I believe the plan is a kayak-able bypass waterway there. The last obstacle is the railroad tracks. It's possible the re-opened channel may only be navigable at low tide. See--http://www.waterfrontaction.org/map/dd_cha…

Re: “Peña's Bakery Is The Bread of Life in Oakland's Fruitvale

Best pan dulce mexicano in the world. I've been enjoying their bread for many years. My kids are grown and still love their pan dulce. You can go to any other pan dulce store and see the same type pan, but it doesn't taste the same. Thank you Panaderia Pea for not giving up. I comend you on your excellent service! See you Sunday! thanks you for staying within our community. Saludos a toda la familia

Re: “Lake Merritt's Weird, Polluted — And Stinky — Legacy

Nice article. As long as the trash gates under the 10th St. bridge remain in operation, the lake will never be able to host all the aquatic life that resides in the Bay. On the other hand, we're probably going to have a pollution problem, if we remove the trash gates.

Re: “Oakland’s Most Iconic Tree Is Named After A Socialist Firebrand: Jack London (Of Course)

Claiming Jack London was a "champagne socialist" is to be completely ignorant of the man. Learn about him rather than spout and expose your ignorance.

Thank you Annalee Allen for finding the funding for a new plaque and arranging the redefication ceremony.

Jack continues to be an inspiration. Readers, do you know that Jack was a co-founder of the venable California Writers Club, calwriters.org?

The question is: was he a founder or an "honorary" founder? Records describe him as both.

Re: “Biff’s Coffee Shop In Oakland Was Googie Glory

Ever notice that you never see a beautiful picture of Biff's as it looked the last year it was open in any of these articles about how beautiful it was?

That's because they don't exist. The only beautiful picture of it in circulation is an architects drawing that doesn't look anything like the actual building looked.

It was only slightly more distinctive than a Pizza Hut, because it was basically just a round Pizza Hut.

Now, in it's place, there will be homes for hundreds of people. Given the recent restaurant boom, Oakland needs this much more than it needs a restored diner.

Re: “Oakland’s Most Iconic Tree Is Named After A Socialist Firebrand: Jack London (Of Course)

Jack London was a champagne socialist who lived on a ranch in Sonoma County. Hypocrite.

Re: “Downtown Berkeley

Hello guys. At the risk of sounding too promotional, I would like to recommend an alternate computer store. I have been consistently using the services from http://macrepairberkeley.com/">Mac Repair Berkeley and they have been really amazing! Compared to the service linked in the above list, the prices are quite lower and the services are top-notch.

Re: “Can I Recycle That?

I appreciate the information on what can be recycled and what should be. I agree with what some others have said about how we need to get more people involved in this type of stuff. I feel like there are so many things that should be recycled and so many things like, hazardous waste, that shouldn't just be thrown in a recycle bin. http://www.ohanaenviron.com/material_equipment.html

Re: “Self-identified 'Fat Trans Man' and Berkeley Resident Shane Brodie Protests the 'Transphobic' Trump Statues

Brodie will ultimately fail at his quests until he learns to respect others instead of unilaterally demanding respect that only goes one way. Maybe one day he will learn that there is a difference between having the balls to take a stance and just being a dick.
