Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
Hi all. We had the floor done so we closed for thanksgiving
Miranda H.: Not sure what happened over the weekend, but the restaurant is definitely still open as of today!
I believe they closed down? It was empty last weekend- no tables?
Mitchell, Geta is a pretty good comp! I think the prices and quality of fish are similar, but, for instance, the chirashi at Yo Sushi is a lot more generous with the raw fish. Geta gets the edge for spicy tuna and, probably, for various cooked donburi. And for speed of service and your ability to actually land a table, Yo Sushi has a big, big edge.
Hey, Luke, how does this place compare to Geta in Oakland? (BtW, please hold the mayo.) ;-)
Want to try the place as I have bought tires from Gomes across the stret for 40 yrs. Where do you park? The lot next door when the paint store is closed, or is that parking for them. One of my former ball players told the Po'Boy is good that the Oysters were fresh.. I tried to park there Saturday, but could not find a place within two blocks, so I wnt to Lena's
I'm no expert on the history of Mesoamerican food but I like the book. It's beautiful- I enjoy the art and the commentary with the new recipes I'm encouraged to try.
Thank you Luz and Catriona for dedicating so much time and so much of yourselves and gifting this to us.

How sad the authors along with Terry play right into Colonizing Eurocentric vegetarian diet - that is the biggest farce and shows unfortunately how colonized they are. All traditional diets included animal fats for substance - and whole cooking of animal parts. I also have studied diets via old cookbooks, Weston a Price info, Diane Kennedy and authority of Mexican Cuisine-- there missing the lard and promoting ill health for their people.
Terry is looking puffy lately-- I know I was there 10 years ago as vegetarian, 195 lbs-- not any more I found the truth of native people- dont go with us recommendations and white people diet trends
Based on this article's positive review, we had lunch there this past Tuesday.
The place was not busy (maybe 1/3 of the tables, at most, were occupied). Nevertheless, the service was very poor. It took about 40 minutes for all of our food to show up and it came staggered. My wife was 1/2 way done with her meal by the time mine finally showed up.
The lack of attentiveness to some details seemed odd. You can eat at the counter where they have a large screen TV on. It was showing Sesame Street in a restaurant with 100% adults in the room and no children.
In terms of food quality, the pot stickers were excellent. My dish of Jiangxi Stir Fry (House Special), rice noodles with beef and more, was very good. My wife's dish of Jiangxi noodle salad (House Special), rice noodles with BBQ chicken and more, was not so good. The chicken was nicely sliced white meat chicken that would have been a good substitute for sandpaper - incredibly dry and tasteless.
I hope this is part of a "shake out" and they improve over time. The theme is great, the restaurant is large and clean and nicely decorated. Some of the food was great. I would like to be able to go back there, but definitely not in the near future.
Every customer wants to have a good food cooked for them. Whenever they are visiting restaurants they want a special and something different to have perfect meal. http://www.loveandquiches.com/
This combines 2 visits: the 1st Friday Oct 2, (fantastic!) & then Monday the 5th (disappointing)...the same 2 dishes wildly different..Friday: the tables favorite 2 dishes: the pork eggplant flatbread perfect chewy flavorful dough topped with wonderfully smokey eggplant & savory ground pork was sent back Monday..the pork cold..Scott, our excellent waiter, replaced it and the squid plancha dish (also cold). Even so, those 2 dishes which had been so great Friday were, even when redone, not nearly as complex, flavorful or well executed Monday. The little tarragon gem salad was, on the other hand, just as good. Tomato salad on Friday was boring & miniscule. Friday's bavette steak was well cooked though not as beefy tasting as I like and the vege melange (though tasty) as its side didn't really make sense to me.The lamb ragu & papardelle Monday was fair with scant amounts of lamb but not really a ragu IMHO but a loose separate mixture of tomatoes etc & small chunks of lamb ....also the garbanzo fritters were not nearly as crispy Monday even although the flavor was fine... the jury's still out..one more thing..Fridays tattooed ponytailed waitress didn't seem into her work that night...an air of indifference and messed up our drink order...
Was there tonight. Impressive to watch the prep. Even more surprising the delivery exceeded expectations. Met Kraus and the crew. All talents in their own right. Wines are most decidedly natural Spanish French Sicilian. Excellent. Vegs roasted, posk steak, shishito peppers, & black cod tail. Scrumptious.
