Re: “The Tour de Coop

I work for Animal Place, a nonprofit sanctuary specializing in the rescue of abused farmed animals, including chickens. We operate Rescue Ranch that saves the lives of thousands of hens from the egg industry each year. We have two facilities - Vacaville and Grass Valley.

We currently have more than 1,600 hens available for adoption who were saved from starvation by a California egg farmer. Those interested in adoption can find out more here: http://animalplace.org/adoptable_birds.htm….

I think it is important to remember that the backyard chicken movement has a dark side to it.

Rooster Chicks: Male chicks are killed or used as "packing peanuts" by the hatcheries supplying backyard chicks.

Parent Birds: They are housed inside sheds. They never see the light of day. At the young age of 18-mos-old, they are slaughtered.

Transport: Day-old chicks are shipped through the postal service with no legal oversight and often in any climate conditions, resulting in the unnecessary death of sensitive baby animals (who are never raised by their own mothers, either).

Chickens are intelligent, social animals. They can be wonderful backyard companions. Adopt, don't buy.

What a fresh and creative idea. You understood your market and the people. Nothing less than brilliance!

Re: “The Perfect Sidekick Offers a Safe Space for Lesbians — and Straight Women — to Work Out

I wish we had you in Anaheim... I would quit my gym for yours! I've heard about your prices... and basically the more you workout the less you pay. Win-win situation :)

Re: “The Perfect Sidekick Offers a Safe Space for Lesbians — and Straight Women — to Work Out

This place is absolutely awesome! I went for the first time two weeks ago just to stop by and check out the place. My boyfriend was with me and as soon as we went in, we were both using all the workout equipment! Nathalie made it fun AND INFORMATIVE! She drew on a white board what area we were working out and what moves would help improve that section. I got to meet the yoga instructor too and she was super cool, I definitely want to try yoga next!

Re: “The Perfect Sidekick Offers a Safe Space for Lesbians — and Straight Women — to Work Out

This article hits the nail on the head! The Perfect Sidekick is an accepting and honest group of people who are improving their lives through community and fitness. Nathalie genuinely cares about the overall health and happiness of her members, A rarity in the (sometimes shallow) fitness industry...

Re: “The Perfect Sidekick Offers a Safe Space for Lesbians — and Straight Women — to Work Out

Such an SMART move -- It's crazy nobody had thought of it before. But Nathalie has a personality that I think no one could have brought to an LGBT gym if they tried. Congrats on having the guts to be an innovative thinking and going for it!

To The Perfect Sidekick, trainers and clients - keep up the hustle and good work!

Re: “Cat-sturbating

Regarding the small paragraph at the end of the article... No, Matthew Vines is not your friend. His arguments are rather flawed. Sure, read and explore, but make sure you consider both sides of the argument, eg by reading this:

Re: “Cat-sturbating

If anything the cat was probably attracted to the masturbation happening in its midst. My husband and I have to lock our cat out of the bedroom every time we have sex because she always wants in on the action. Cats are just freaky little perverts, bless their little hearts.

Re: “Beyond the Doll's House

Making a living as an artist is a challenge. I'm a composer, whose had NEA funding. However, that is no guarantee that commissions will keep coming in .
Most recently, I've opened a piano studio in the Oakland/San Leandro area ( www.hectorarmientapianostudio.com). I also run Opera Cultura in the South Bay.
Teaching and being an artistic entrepreneur are key to survival. Keep fighting the good fight. My best, Hector Armienta - Opera Cultura

Re: “Napoleon's Epic Premiere

For those who arrange weekend marathons to watch all of Star Wars, the Godfather, Dexter, or The Wire, five and half hours is nothing. The fifteen-hour production (over four nights) of Wagner's Ring Cycle was an unforgettable event in my life. Some things can be so worth the time, so there's no way I'm missing Gance's Napoleon! Thanks for the alert, Ms. Harwood!

Re: “Worlds Collide in Thomas Christensen's '1616'

Great review! I'm definitely adding this to my reading list. I love stories that tie together parallel timelines and I look forward to seeing how the photography and prose work together.

Re: “Femikaze on Mars

I have seen Femikaze live before, and it was a fantastic show! I find myself trying to explain the sketches to other people, and I can never do them justice. If you crave comedy that is as witty as it is silly, check these very funny women out.

Re: “Molière in Modern Medicine

Oh no, I think we ran a correction, too. Thanks, Hurwitt.

Re: “Molière in Modern Medicine

No, you were right: Shotgun did produce it in 2004, and Berkeley Rep also staged it in 2006. Lisa Drostova reviewed both of those productions in the East Bay Express.

Ah, thank you. My gaffe. Will fix.

Re: “Molière in Modern Medicine

Shotgun didn't do The Miser, Berkeley Rep did in the 05/06 season. With Epps.
