Re: “'99 Homes' Is No Art Film

That was a great review. I went in, saw all the personalities, the time and place. I understood what was wrong with their world and could relate to it. I can't help it either in spending money on a lunch I am eating out, rather than at home before I go to a job that asks me to work harder and faster.

Re: “'The Walk' Will Make You Sigh and Cheer

Too bad they cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the lead!I couldn't watch a 30 second ad with him, much less the length of a feature film. But to add to that the cultural differences between him and Petit? Truly terrible casting.

Re: “Right On!: 'The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution'

More than anything, the Black Panthers were about Black nationalism. That message is often lost in Americas rewrite of history. They promoted the importance of early childhood education, nutrition, family values and economic independence. They wanted Black people to start their own businesses and to recirculate their dollars in their own community as opposed to giving it away. Moreover, they promoted self definition, confidence and pride in being Black. They also wanted America to know that the constitutional right to arm themselves and be responsible for their own self defense applies to everybody. I remember the Panthers following OPD around making sure that cops followed the law when they stopped Black people. As an African American growing up in East Oakland in the 60's, Huey Newton was my inspiration for academic achievement. Because of Huey, I read socialist literature like Chairman Mao's Red Book, but also great Black literature from Langston Hughes and James Baldwin. That exposure to serious subject matter at 12-15 years of age gave me the confidence and comprehension skills for later academic success at the University of California and a lifelong thirst for reading. My attitude entering the University was not wow, look at all these smart white kids. It was here I am, yes I am Black and also proud, smart and ready to compete with anybody here. The power of their message was so dangerous to America that the conspiracy by the FBI broke many laws, including murder, to ensure their destruction. Remember that drugs quickly saturated the Black community immediately after the Panthers were destroyed. That too was and is a national conspiracy, supported by the entire legal system to promote the genocide and incarceration of Black men. The film is important because the positive impact of the Black Panthers should not be lost in the delusional spin of history.

Re: “Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet Is Too Scrumptious to Miss

just because something is animated does not automagically make it "something for the kiddos" it is this kind of limited thinking that has held animation back for so long.

Re: “The Look of Silence: Deeply Troubling

Te U.S. government had a major role in the massacres at the center of The Look of Silence. It cheered on the mass murder, armed and trained the military dictatorship that ruled for decades after, and US corporate interests continue to benefit. Human rights groups are urging the U.S. government to declassify and release all records of the 1965/66 violence. The U.S. must also acknowledge its responsibility in these bloody events and the many bloodbaths - in Aceh, West Papua, East Timor and elsewhere in the archipelago - that followed. Re: “3 ½ Minutes, 10 Bullets Is Provocative

Michael Dunn is in prison for life. He can appeal all he wants. He can yell all he wants. He murdered a 17 year kid. He endangered the lives of the other 3. He's a violent racist that needs to stay in prison. He committed a hate crime and he gotta pay for his actions. He needs to take personal responsibility. Cause even white people got ratchedness about themselves, cause I've seen and experienced it on many occasions. Racism exists, hate exists, and we must not allow white supremacy to run a muck with impunity any longer. No more.

Re: “Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll

"US aggression created adversaries." It also killed 600,000 Cambodians in a bombing campaign, which should also count as "systematic murder."

Re: “The Apu Trilogy: Rich and Unforgettable

Caught Pather Panchali today, fitting in the other two before Thursday. I'd seen the first before, but this restoration is amazing, and seeing it on a screen was a completely different, heart-rending experience.
