I'm involved in choosing the musicians who appear at the Iowa City Jazz Festival and I do the booking. I agree that festivals often ignore women-led bands. We made a concerted effort this year to fix this at our free outdoor festival that will be held on July 3, 4, and 5. Find the full schedule and lineup at www.summerofthearts.org. You'll find Anat Cohen's quartet , Ingrid and Christine Jensen (Nordic Connect), Melissa Aldana's Crash Trio and Esperanza Spaulding appearing with Tom Harrell's Colors of a Dream. Also, Araicne Trujillo appears with Pedrito Martinez.
I appreciate Ellen and others who take the lead in this area. I book the Temescal Street Fair and other events and I make sure women are front and center. There are many wonderful women jazz and Latin acts but we need affirmative action to make sure they are hired and featured. I'm so tired of the old "well we tried hard but just couldn't find any women." Here are some names: Amikaeyla, Linda Tillery, Rebecca Mauleon, Jackeline Rago, Michelle Jacques, Rita Lackey, Carolyn Brandy and Ojala, Lisa Ferraro and Erika Luckett, Rhiannon…and the list goes on
Ellen, you are a constant inspiration to women and girls and I love and support with all my heart your very positive, well directed messages to the Bay Area music scene. I don't know why we don't see a dramatic change in the balance of women musicians being acknowledged. It just does not make sense. Keep it moving baby! I want you to know that I am so very proud of all that you do to be a powerful voice for all of us.
Bravo once again to Ellen Seeling, my hero. She has had the courage to both speak up and make the changes she wants to see happen. I have lived 35 professional years of the kind of disparity she talks about, and it's nice to be finally understood, and championed. I'm ever grateful.

Very interesting info and also that there is someone out there still producing flexi discs. I´ve got lots of EVA-tone pressings and I also got hold of their sales catalogue back in the 80s. Been trying to find out about the european manufacture Lyntone. Have quite a good list of their music production from 60s,70s 80s and 90s.

I mostly agree with the previous comment,but I think her 'Springtime' album was still within bounds.In this latest album her voice is off the scale,and not in a good way.It`s either misguided pretention or a lack of confidence in her own enchanting voice."Less is more" ~Robert Browning
i dunno. does Holland play in that league? it's kind of hard to hear all those evocations of american experience in a voice that has become so tragically saturated over the years. it really WAS an intersection of many american genres, but somewhere after Escondida it's as if Holland felt the need to make her voice more...HOLLAND--ditching nuance for what is basically now a schtick. most tragic of all is that her song writing is awesome--dark, cleaver, and subversive at times. But that voice. So let's not get carried away here: jolie holland--jolie friggin' holland?!?--does not play in the big leagues as far as "evocations" go.

In the early part of the 20th century there were 6000 piano makers in the U.S. Playing music meant playing an instrument not pushing a button on a remote. People got together to make music. Making and listening going together. We all can sing; most of us anyway.
There are far fewer real music players now than once-upon-a-time. Sad to say. We've all become just consumers.

OK,debfagan I Listened to his stuff. It sounds like car commercial music. Or any kind of contemporary commercial instrumental music to sell a variety of products,goods, and services. Is that his day job,alluded to but not fully disclosed, creating electronic music for commercials? Somebody has to do it,but advertising pays. Really really well. I've had a bit of experience there. Broke For Free does at times remind me of a score to an Acura or Volvo commercial and in the case of "Budding", sounds like the Cocteau Twins done on Pro Tools,minus the hypnotic vocals. As to the journalistic qualities, it's hardly Charles Shaar Murray or Lisa Blanning.
@debfagan, I'm not sure I follow, are you saying Broke for Free is just giving away his music for free as a marketing ploy so he can eventually charge for his product and become one of the richest men on the planet like Bill Gates? I personally don't have a problem if he wants to give away his music and I agree people should listen to it and judge for themselves. I take offense at his not paying for other people's music. Musicians deserve to be paid. Unless they suck.
Any of you angry birds ever heard of Bill Gates? He gave away millions of copies of Windows DOS - not because he wasn't a professional. (hobbyist - really?), not because he didn't want to make money, and lord knows he wasn't devaluing OS software. He did it because he wanted to get the word out there and the rest is history. Have any of you listened to Broke For Free? No? Go listen. Yes? Ahh then, perhaps what you feel threatened by is obvious. Good, well written article and enlightening insights.
As long as Hobbyists are considered Artiists, WE WILL NEVER BE FREE. Perhaps a better name for this "creative outlet" would be Entitled By Nature.
