Re: “The G-Eazy Life

I see huge things for the “James Dean” of rap in the coming years. G-eazy is finally getting the recognition he deserves

The day you hear Marsalis say, "You may have a point." is the day the ice cracks in proverbial hell.

Re: “Free By Choice

OK,debfagan I Listened to his stuff. It sounds like car commercial music. Or any kind of contemporary commercial instrumental music to sell a variety of products, goods, and services. Is that his day job, alluded to but not fully disclosed, creating electronic music for commercials? Somebody has to do it,but advertising pays. Really really well. I've had a bit of experience there. Broke For Free does at times remind me of a score to an Acura or Volvo commercial and in the case of "Budding", sounds like the Cocteau Twins done on Pro Tools, minus the hypnotic vocals. As to the journalistic qualities, it's hardly Charles Shaar Murray or Lisa Blanning.

Re: “Free By Choice

@debfagan, I'm not sure I follow, are you saying Broke for Free is just giving away his music for free as a marketing ploy so he can eventually charge for his product and become one of the richest men on the planet like Bill Gates? I personally don't have a problem if he wants to give away his music and I agree people should listen to it and judge for themselves. I take offense at his not paying for other people's music. Musicians deserve to be paid. Unless they suck.

Re: “Free By Choice

Any of you angry birds ever heard of Bill Gates? He gave away millions of copies of Windows DOS - not because he wasn't a professional. (hobbyist - really?), not because he didn't want to make money, and lord knows he wasn't devaluing OS software. He did it because he wanted to get the word out there and the rest is history. Have any of you listened to Broke For Free? No? Go listen. Yes? Ahh then, perhaps what you feel threatened by is obvious. Good, well written article and enlightening insights.

Re: “Free By Choice

As long as Hobbyists are considered Artiists, WE WILL NEVER BE FREE. Perhaps a better name for this "creative outlet" would be Entitled By Nature.

Re: “Free By Choice

I'm mystified by the premise of this article. It's promoting a guy who isn't a working musician, doesn't sell music, and also does not make music by trade? I suppose it's just a personality piece I just don't understand "music writers". Is this some sort of post modern non story story? I know this: many musicians who'd love to fund their art, life, and passion would love to have some ink/press coverage. I find it utter mockery that you'd choose this personality as a feature in any context. Double mockery considering the social/economical climate in the Bay Area. Please--may we have responsible journalism ? Please and thank you.

Re: “Free By Choice

Not only an insult to every hardworking musician in the world, but an insult to anyone middle-class & under. Hey man, it's great that you're comfortable enough that you can choose not to accept the big-money ghostwriting gig, and that you can also choose to give away your creativity for free. Don't you realize that when you do this you devalue ALL recorded music? I'll assume you'll be passing on any fees for live performance as well, right?

Re: “Free By Choice

I know it's just the point, but I'm not buying his schtick. Didn't get in to music until he discovered a music making program? Not even piano lessons when he was a kid? It's so easy now, isn't it? I mean, anyone can do it,right? See.

Re: “Free By Choice

While he may be free to have his own opinion, there are many musicians and writers who would like to make just a moderate living from their writing and performances. I believe he should pay for his music, I have purchased all 2000+ recordings I listen to and I like to think someone put food on their table with that money.

Re: “Planet Clair

a hahahahaha. the last time the red Razorback plastic hog hat (there's six in the kitchen, but only one "senior" partner of the group) was taken out to a "public sporting event" or "music show" was like in the 80's. but whatever it's seen enough 4th of July BBQs or Labor Day party things, to have misbehaved enough times to have gotten its red pig ass grounded forEVER since.

Re: “Free By Choice

I've been an avid Broke For Free fan for abut three years now, and Cascino never fails to impress me through his creativity. His genre diversity blows me away - kind of like an electronic Van Morrison or Beck. His tunes stay in my head for days, and for once in my life, BFF ear worms don't drive me crazy. I can't wait for his Petal release.

Re: “Burners Torched Over Native Party

I think this is awesome and glad it blew up in their self entitled faces. They needed to cry and be enlightened of the truth. It's disrespectful period! Those who think the burners had the right are just as self entitled morons who only see things within their stupid little bubble. Open your eyes and see the truth of what you are doing and take responsibility for your actions and move forward. Learn from this children. If you decide to ignore it then you are a bonafide idiot.
