If Radiohead is as revolutionary as they claim to be, why is it cool to charge $100 for the show?
u hear about the polish jazz musician? ...he was in it for the money ! :p
I love the author's insight that Little Simz plays on Alice in Wonderland to describe her time occupying space in the entertainment industry as a Black femme MC. What abt the industry gives Simz the feelings provoked in the album - erratic happiness, feelings of uncontrollability and emotional precarity, power imbalance? How does Little Simz communicate journeying through (at least enough to come out lucid and report back from Wonderland) using the Industry as a platform for these critiques of power? I would love to hear the thoughts of the author of this blurb on topics like these in future articlesz
wow amazing verbages, an immaculate control of the written form
We love VAMP and I don't stop by enough now that it left our neighborhood. Best of luck and success in the future. I really miss you here on Athol. It was great having some life on that block after hours.
It is amazing how almost any smallish business like Vintage Art and Music for the People are obligated to use Fakebook for publicity. It is even more amazing that the Express puts that fact on the front page of the story.
I fell in love with the album, her voice, and the instrumental value. It is so important for young women to be aware of themselves and self value, and this artist has emulated the concept of not only personal perspective but also the psychological perspective of others.. I'm excited to see where her music flourishes into...
I am very sad, for Jim is one of the reasons Amoeba remains the best place I have worked for. Jim was always so interested in my music - Renaissance and Baroque lutes, unhip despite early music's self-appointed acronym - when I knew little of his, beside "experimental," and the high regard accorded him by classical musicians. Jim's was the all-inclusive mindset that every artist should strive for.

Jim was a sweet and kind soul. I am still reeling from this news and seeing this wonderful tribute in the paper finally released the floodgates. I just didn't want to believe that he could be gone. so sudden. So soon. His music was way out there, but also quite poignant and beautiful. And I actually think he might be amused that a piece of advertising spam is the first comment on here. He would find it ironic, I think.
But he was much more to me than the nice record guy at Amoeba. He was my boyfriend for five years and I will always love him. We remained friends after our break up and he helped me a great deal in the last several years. He was a source of great support in my chronic incurable illness. Doping things for me that I could not do for myself. This was not something he shared with anyone. He didn't need to be lauded for being a compassionate person. He just was.
Jim and I made a wonderful couple of pieces of music together; which we were going to release but I had been dragging my feet about. Being ill, I had little energy to devote to finishing the design of the cover and procrastinated. I really wish I hadn't; as now we'll never get the chance to release it together. But maybe I can find a way, as a tribute to him, to still do it.
If his passing has taught me anything, it is not to wait.
This isn't very eloquent, but I find that I have lost my eloquence with the sadness I feel at the world losing someone who was truly a good person in every sense of the word. The world lost a musician but many of us lost a dear friend. I imagine Jim is dancing with Baron Samedi, ( one of the Voodoo deities of death that he is dressed up as in the image above,) wherever he is now. I can imagine they would have a grand old time.

I met Jim shortly after moving to KC , he was the guy at the record store that could get me anything I wanted. Always a kind soul, almost always had a smile, even when thing were rough. After a while he and a few of our friends were playing together doing whatever came to mind, and he and a friend opened place called the Rhumba Box, hosted every outside sort of music from punk to ..well, just about everything. Somehow he got Beck to play 2 shows on his 1st tour there, when Loser was just beginning to hit the air. Those shows, and that someone had torn the sprinkler system out of the space he rented for it lead to the closing of it and his exit from KC at that point. As it was pre internet days, we lost track of one another until a few years ago. Even not having seen one another for over 20 years, the news of his passing has been a blow. He was a unique soul, one the world will miss.
some awesome albums on here, thank you for shedding light on these sounds/songs from cool underground artists... we would ask that listeners, freaks, and mystics of subculture check out V.E.X. (Ventriloquest Ectoplasmold Xanaxax) who released two albums this year (2016 in the oppressors calendar) "Codex Hex" was released in spring, on cassette from Cool World Records (Los Angeles), and on CD from Fantasy 1 (Austin), and "insectsex" came out in fall, on cassette from Ratskin Records (Oakland), and on limited CD/DVD self release. Both albums currently streaming on bandcamp: https://xanaxax.bandcamp.com/
Kent Lewandowski, It's a good question. According to the feasibility study, an additional convention center in Oakland wouldn't bring enough revenue; almost all convention centers in the country operate at a loss, the study says. The report also says the Kaiser fails to meet true convention center criteria, since it doesn't have enough "breakout rooms" and so on.
I'm unclear why convention use is ruled out? With tech companies coming to town, they want and need space to host user conventions. Currently I believe the only space in Oakland is the Marriott Convention center.
I remember as a child and young adult attending Oakland Symphony concerts in the Calvin Simmons Theater. The acoustics and sight lines are the finest in the Bay Area. I hope other Oakland Council members will support Rebecca Kaplan and that this wonderful venue can be brought back to life.
Useful suggestions ! Just to add my thoughts , if your business is searching for a Bankruptcy B6I , my friend used a fillable document here http://pdf.ac/6QK200.
Kevin Mulvey, Pleasanton police were present at the Oakland protest, per a mutual aid agreement, and one of their vehicles was damaged.
History repeats repeats repeats-- #1 When Occupy was shoved off the Plaza 5 years ago, a huge, huge crowd of everbody showed up to protest and march back there. Cops from 13 jurisdictions had been called to stop this community--all kind of folks--from getting there. Pleasanton then too. Then, #2 When we got to 14th and Broadway it was fenced and lined with cops in SWAT gear 20 deep. A mumble on the PA, teargas shot in every direction simultaneously. Parents with strollers and toddlers and dogs were a few feet away. Many of us ran to gather them up and pull them away--many of the people wanting to support Occupy were terrified, confused. And many were sick. Children included.
