Re: “Can Birdland Take Flight in Its New Location?

The new Birdland 2.0 incorporates the down-home charm, the wonderful eccentricities, and the community feel of its former Berkeley location with ceiling height, a nice dance floor and a beautiful renovation job on its new digs. Now one of the best party scenes ever has evolved into a space where more peo0ple can see really great music and feel really good about it!

Re: “Can Birdland Take Flight in Its New Location?

The bird has landed on 43rd and MLk! Super excited that its finally happening and legit. It took a lot of hard work so cheers to Birdman and everyone who made it happen.

Re: “Can Birdland Take Flight in Its New Location?

Michael's quest is a worthy one - there's a motherlode of terrific local musicians and a scarcity of venues, and Michael's been wonderfully open about presenting a wide range of us. Here's to many years of great live *local* music!

Re: “Keep Mutating

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for noting my miscalculation about 38 years. On the "first Bay Area punk record" point, I should have clarified it and wrote "first Bay Area punk album." I wrote "arguably," because Psychotic Pineapple's album is earlier, though perhaps not "punk."

Re: “Keep Mutating

It's stated that he joined Chrome "more than forty years ago." Yet if he joined after 1976's "The Visitation," that was 38 years back.
Also, it's claimed that the DKs' debut LP of 1980 was "arguably the first Bay Area punk record." This ignores and slights the 1976 single by Crime, the 1977 EP by The Avengers, the 1978 EP by The Readymades, etc.

Re: “Are Jazz Festivals Excluding Women?

Gender discrimination has no place in jazz.....It doesn't matter if you are a girl or a guy, ..What matters is can you play? Can you swing? This would be like saying there is 30 % blacks and 70 % whites...or 57 % are italian american, while only 23 % are German american...Jazz belongs to all races, all color and and all genders...It is 2014, it's so sad we are even talking about this....

Re: “Turning The Volume Up On Oakland

Love the statement: "We're capturing a certain moment of time in Oakland," said Tavella. "We were having trouble confining it to a certain sound, since there is so much good music here." Ah, just like our amazing denizens. Spicy variety!

Re: “Are Jazz Festivals Excluding Women?

Ellen Right on sis and so what if that dates me . I have been an instrumentalist, keys and percussion for some 50 years and hae always been aggravated by the disparity with women in the biz unless you are a vocalist. You might even remember me from NYC anyway congrats on really picking up the struggle for fairness and making space and opportunities for the youjnger ones so they can imagine their place on the stage and work toward it.

Re: “Are Jazz Festivals Excluding Women?

Excellent raising of consciousness around the issue of the lack of opportunities for women's music to be heard, Ellen Seeling. You are to be applauded and we will continue to support your efforts by fulfilling our mission to promote women musicians, globally, at http://www.wijsf.org

Re: “Are Jazz Festivals Excluding Women?

I'm involved in choosing the musicians who appear at the Iowa City Jazz Festival and I do the booking. I agree that festivals often ignore women-led bands. We made a concerted effort this year to fix this at our free outdoor festival that will be held on July 3, 4, and 5. Find the full schedule and lineup at www.summerofthearts.org. You'll find Anat Cohen's quartet , Ingrid and Christine Jensen (Nordic Connect), Melissa Aldana's Crash Trio and Esperanza Spaulding appearing with Tom Harrell's Colors of a Dream. Also, Araicne Trujillo appears with Pedrito Martinez.

Re: “Are Jazz Festivals Excluding Women?

I appreciate Ellen and others who take the lead in this area. I book the Temescal Street Fair and other events and I make sure women are front and center. There are many wonderful women jazz and Latin acts but we need affirmative action to make sure they are hired and featured. I'm so tired of the old "well we tried hard but just couldn't find any women." Here are some names: Amikaeyla, Linda Tillery, Rebecca Mauleon, Jackeline Rago, Michelle Jacques, Rita Lackey, Carolyn Brandy and Ojala, Lisa Ferraro and Erika Luckett, Rhiannon…and the list goes on

Re: “Are Jazz Festivals Excluding Women?

Ellen, you are a constant inspiration to women and girls and I love and support with all my heart your very positive, well directed messages to the Bay Area music scene. I don't know why we don't see a dramatic change in the balance of women musicians being acknowledged. It just does not make sense. Keep it moving baby! I want you to know that I am so very proud of all that you do to be a powerful voice for all of us.
