Re: “Burnt Ramen Pushes Back Against City of Richmond

As a Roadie, security, and member of the community most easily described as 'punk', nationwide, as well as part of the underground/outsider arts community, and having lived in similar places, roughly 35 years now- and having volunteered at Burnt Ramen in the past- I just want to say that places like this have long provided safe haven and a sense of family to people who may not get it anywhere else. And when people say that Burnt Ramen saved their lives, it's not an exaggeration; these places are put together by people for people who's eclectic personalities are drawn together. This isn't a 'scene' that people get into, or even a lifestyle we choose. That may sound phoney and pretentious to some, but it certainly isn't meant to- and my point is: I've seen too many lives lost to suicide and addiction and have witnessed first hand these little communities save people from that crap. The streets are rough, and many of us don't survive them. It's not for you to judge whether blow up dolls are art or not, or what's a visual joke. What's misunderstood is often persecuted throughout history. This is a case where an accident- a tragedy in Oakland happened, and now politicians are 'cleaning up' neighborhoods in the guise of safety. But this is a straight attack in the name of gentrification. We are not your enemies. In fact, in many instances, we are there where a cracked house, or shooting gallery could have been. Better than being homeless- which is where many will end up.

Conglomeration of blow up sex dolls? What on earth is Charles talking about?

Re: “Burnt Ramen Pushes Back Against City of Richmond

But would you WANT those documents released? What on earth might be in those documents?

Um, Item #1, some kind of (this is hard to describe, see attached photo) conglomeration of blow up sex dolls with paint and attached ornaments, can't speculate about the artistic meaning but it is highly flammable and partially blocking the exit.

Item #2, piles of bedding, apparently waiting to be laundered, starting to grow black mold, health hazard.

Item #3...just see attached photo. Do not circulate photo, circulation of this photo may violate state laws.

And so forth and so forth.

Before you level criticism of information not being released, ask yourself if you really WANT what you're asking for?

Re: “Burnt Ramen Pushes Back Against City of Richmond

Tom Butt says he wants to "make sure the building is safe and code-conforming".

These are not the same things, and neither of these goals required Butt to send code enforcement to summarily evict people from their home at Christmas.

The City of Richmond won't release documents detailing exactly why this building, which has been inhabited safely for many years, can no longer be inhabited. This makes Tom Butt's statements about his motives highly suspect.

Re: “Cops That Worked at Richmond Schools Now Under Investigation for Alleged Sexual Misconduct with Former Student

Thank you Dr Sylvester!!!My name is Elizabeth Obec from Paris. I am here to give testimony on how I got my husband back, my husband left me for no reason 6 Months. He moved in with another woman, I felt like killing myself, my life became very bitter and sorrowful. Then 1 day, a friend of mine told me about a great spell caster that is very good and she said that he told her all about her life history and the problem she is facing, i didn't believe it because I've worked with so many of them and it didn't work. She begged me further so I decided to try this great spell caster called Great Dr Sylvester. I still didn't believe, but inside me i wanted to give a try and as God will have it, i used the spell solution he gave me and the next day I received a call from my darling husband Romero last month. He apologized and came back to me. I'm very happy now with my family it worked for me and i believe it will work for you too just give him a try and follow up this is a clear truth from a testifier. Re: “Was Operator of Oakland Warehouse Fire Venue 'Warned' of Safety Issues, 'Illegal' Construction, Danger?

Shelly Mack, I would urge you to preserve all emails, text messages, photos, documents from that time period. Including stuff like credit card statements which may help you remember. I have watched your interviews and you have been a great source of information.

You said you called police on that place...can you say when? What was said? Can you prove those calls with phone logs?

Preserve everything!!! This is not just a criminal incident but actual human history. I hope you are making yourself available to the prosecutor.

Re: “Artists Who Survived Oakland Warehouse Fire Discuss The Tragedy, Those Missing, Need for Safe Underground Spaces

How about what needs to happen is grow up and get a real job in a place you can afford to live? Stop whining about your art, your venues, your safe spaces...get a job that pays for a safe roof over your head, snowflakes.

Btw, EDM Digest just wrote that Chor Ng's property portfolio is worth 5 million total. Take that and divide by 36...give the lawyers 30 or 40 percent...

Guess what? Unless ONE LAW FIRM can manage to represent all 36 victims, there is no viable lawsuit here. City has immunity under California Tort Claims Act for any damages arising out of failure to inspect a building.

It would really be a strange day in California when 36 people die horribly in a fire and no lawyers want to sue anybody. But do the math.

Unless there is a game-changing insurance policy here. Haven't heard of any, yet.

Re: “Actual Cafe and Victory Burger to Close on December 23

@Phil Wolff
A victim of his own contribution to gentrification, you mean? There's always a beginning to every process. People tend to think gentrification begins with and ends with tech workers and condos.
Obviously it begins with punks, artists, and """community""" cafes.

Re: “Actual Cafe and Victory Burger to Close on December 23

A semantic quibble...

You can have a waiting list for new employees when you pay enough. They'd be lined up with applications if you paid 2x, 3x, or 4x the minimum wage and keep each working a full 40 hour week. They'd be able to live well in Oakland.

Sadly, this would force you to boost the cost of already expensive meals beyond where you're competitive.

But it's not really that you can't afford to pay your workforce, it's that the cost of housing (which is an indirect cost you pay through wages) has risen too high. You're a business victim of Bay Area gentrification.

This is so sad. I love this place. It's always packed, I had no idea it could be losing money.

Re: “Oakland Musicians Unite For Ghost Ship Fire Benefit At Fox Theater

And still, the former residents have received almost none of the funds raised by any organization or individual. They are all still homeless, living on couches or in cars, without basic medications, eyeglasses, etc. While the issue of safe spaces and accessible housing for artists is vitally important, can we not forget these individuals when we are raising funds for the victims. I know we are all victims of this fire, in a sense, but it's time to get these folks some help.

Re: “Oakland to Vote on $350 Million Public Subsidy for New $1.3 Billion Raiders Stadium This Tuesday

The IFDA is created by our local governments. It issues bonds, spends the money, then pays back the bondholders from property taxes. It assumes that there will be lots of new construction and therefore lots of new property tax income. But if there's not enough new income to pay back the bondholders, the likely outcome isn't bankruptcy, it's renegotiation of the pay back terms, stretching them out so that ourlocal governments can afford the payments. In other words, we'll be on the hook for them and, god knows, probably for the seat licenses as well.
