This is the caliber and mental state of the people who are trying to dictate to your community leaders what you and your neighbors can have for family entertainment. If you allow them, your city's well-being, truth, fairness and freedom, and the concept of them for future generations are in very dire and serious jeopardy. This is nothing close to reality. It is severe fanaticism, which rooted in insanity. That should be apparent to any normal observer; these people are disturbed and toxic.
To everyone who is saying that kids will grow up to respect the animals and want to preserve them. GO TO THE ZOO- We don't need a traveling circus that makes there money off the backs of animals like Elephants and Tigers
Great article! Check out the crowdfunding campaign at www.solarseedfund.org!

They are always desperate to harass and try to intimidate anyone who explains what this is all about and cuts so very close to the bone. Perfectly normal is abnormal to these social misfits with animal abuse fantasies as their hobby.
Never before seen photos?
You can be sure that's a lie. If they can somehow make them out to be related to violence in their imagination, they have watched them over and over and tried to get even bigger kicks sharing them with anyone who'll watch with them. Their hard drives know the truth about their animal abuse porn addiction and fetish for inventing scenarios about violence to animals.
Wonder where the never before seen photos were during 12 years in court? Couldn't produce one scrap of evidence and still can't after all these years. Couldn't even buy a conviction for $200,000. All they could come up with was an alcoholic liar; old barn help from years ago who never said boo about any mistreatment until ASPCA and HSUS started stuffing money down his pants. Three federal judges said it was bs.
Well that didn't work, so now they are manipulating your local government. And that is exactly what is happening here.
In over 40 years observation and study of the circus and it's animals I have never observed any abuse! I am everywhere that the animal "rights" advocates say this "abuse" occurs. It makes no logical sense that an animal who is loved and well cared for (and the star of the show) would be abused. Animals are trained via positive reinforcement (as anyone who has trained a dog to sit up will tell you) Do not be bullied or influenced by the propaganda campaigns and shock tacktics of the animal rights business... Go and see for yourself...the circus animals are loved and well cared for!
Never-before-seen photos reveal how Ringling Bros. circus trainers cruelly force baby elephants to learn tricks, and it's not through a reward system, as they claim. Explore the photos that will make parents think twice about taking their child to the circus.
You may have wondered how Ringling Bros. gets 8,000-pound elephants to perform tricks like sitting up and even standing on their heads, but now you know. Ringling breaks the spirit of elephants when they're vulnerable babies who should still be with their mothers. Unsuspecting parents planning a family trip to the circus don't know about the violent training sessions with ropes, bullhooks, and electric shock prods that elephants endure, so we need you to tell them. http://www.ringlingbeatsanimals.com/bound-babies.asp

Bears, elephants, tigers, and other animals do not voluntarily ride bicycles, stand on their heads, balance on balls, or jump through rings of fire. They don't perform these and other difficult tricks because they want to; they perform them because they're afraid of what will happen if they don't.
For animals in circuses, there is no such thing as "positive reinforcement"—only varying degrees of punishment and deprivation. To force them to perform these meaningless and physically uncomfortable tricks, trainers use whips, tight collars, muzzles, electric prods, bullhooks, and other painful tools of the trade.
In the Ringling Bros. circus, elephants are beaten, hit, poked, prodded, and jabbed with sharp hooks, sometimes until bloody. Ringling breaks the spirit of elephants when they're vulnerable babies who should still be with their mothers. Unsuspecting parents planning a family trip to the circus don't know about the violent training sessions with ropes, bullhooks, and electric shock prods that elephants endure. Dateline: Weed, CA (that's right, we have a town called WEED, "high on the slopes of Mt Shasta") The Weed Planning Department, at the behest of the Weed City Council, recently voted to change the zoning laws in order to ban medical marijuana dispensaries within the Weed city limits. It's incredible that these gentlemen who have no knowledge of the medical properties of marijuana are passing laws to regulate it and hinder its legal distribution. Weed is a poverty stricken town that is on life support. Most of the storefronts are empty. For them to deny the establishment of a business that could generate annual sales of $500,000 to $1,000,000 borders on the insane ! And it's not just the store's sales the town will be missing, it's the income to the farmers that grow the medicine, and the workers they hire to help them. It's the bud trimmers who will lose income (usually single mothers trying to feed and clothe their children). It's the salepersons at the dispensary, and the security guard, all who won't get paid money that would then be spent locally, helping the town of Weed survive. It's Ray's Market who loses sales when pot patients get the munchies for doughnuts and chocolate milk, or the Pizza Factory. It's the Weed hardware store who won't make the sales of growing equipment and fertilizers. The effects of this ban will spread and the town will sink further into the abyss of poverty.
The problem with the Weed city government is that they don't want the town's name to be associated with this gentle healing herb, marijuana. Well, guess what guys.... that horse has LEFT THE BARN ! It ain't coming back. The I-5 sign that says "Weed", next 3 exits will ALWAYS bring a knowing smile to the faces of passing motorists. It's time we all embraced the town's name and make plans for the inevitable coming legalization in 2014, 2016 at the latest ! It's time to realize that the cult movie classic "Reefer Madness" is NOT a scientific documentary ! Open a medical marijuana dispensary, let a smoking supply shop open across the street, then a store selling hemp clothing, then watch the Weed Bakery reopen, making tasty munchies locally. Legalization will be the economic savior of Weed, California, but the ostriches who run the city need to get their collective heads out of the sand and start making plans to heavily tax and regulate this upcoming multi-billion dollar industry. This will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Weed, and we can't let it go "Up in Smoke" (sorry, Cheech & Chong).
Turns out Fresno is considering a total ban, at their meeting on Tuesday. They've been informed that CalNORML will be supporting a challenge to the Maral decision.
Thanks for the quick fix! As well as the access issue, you might have mentioned that cultivation is specifically provided for in Prop. 215: "Section 11358, relating to the cultivation of marijuana, shall not apply to a patient, or to the patient's primary caregiver, who possesses or cultivates marijuana for the personal medical purposes of the patient upon the written or oral recommendation or approval of a physician."
Ringling/Feld are stellar stewards of their beloved animals. They are recognized and greatly appreciated by the most respected experts worldwide for their deep commitment and enormous investment into the survival and conservation of Asian elephants.
This elaborate ruse carried out in some cities and the media has nothing whatsoever to do with a traditional training tool called an "elephant guide", and everything to do with opportunist, enterprising, conniving Animal Liberation groups like HSUS and PETA masquerading as "animal protection charities".
This article and ban proposal are merely manifestations of a decades long strategy to enlist the pubic in a highly orchestrated persecution of those whose lives are devoted to working with animals for any reason. They do not spend their deceptively gotten riches or channel collective energy into studying and solving the real problems that plague animals, such as the desperate plight of elephants in the wild.
Real abusers are hidden and dangerous. Solving those problems requires risk, vast knowledge, specialized skills, global cooperation and serious financial investment. None of these groups are equipped for it, nor does it interest them. These efforts require income and lots of it; funding that is hard to come by without some forms of enterprise supporting them. There is nothing flashy and sensational about conservation. It provides no way to feed those with a taste for imagining someone normal, trusted and admired as shockingly fiendish; cruelly, sadistically evil; coldly and black-heartedly mercenary, which is the business these groups have chosen instead.
PETA, HSUS and the like early on discovered there was gold in maliciously targeting the most visible, popular, earnest, out in the open, regulated and inspected household names who conveniently generate a great deal of advertising and media promotion. Cheap publicity for these orgs who panhandle for their living so they can piggyback off their victim's dime to smear them instead of getting their hands dirty actually doing something positive and constructive in the world of animals. But the real work of welfare just doesn't generate billions of tax free dollars so easily or move towards a goal as ghoulish as giving animals the same rights as humans. So instead they make a business of hate mongering, tormenting and threatening all those whose lives and livelihoods involve bringing the most wondrous, mysterious, endangered animals and their stories to the people.
While they make their donation quotas by convincing the public they are the champions of the helpless and downtrodden, their "rescue" efforts always focus on the most well fed, healthy, well cared for, beloved and publicly scrutinized animals in the country. They've worked so hard over the years softening up the public's belly with shock-jock language and contrived horrific pictures, some people are more than willing to believe them than their own eyes or authentic information from those actually involved. The vast majority joining the chorus have never even seen with their own eyes; they just blindly swallow it.
Their favorite targets are always the most high profile and successful such as SeaWorld and Ringling, and ironically here, all of our zoos and aquariums in North America..including this one so curiously ganging up with them. This raises infinite questions about what sort of underhanded backroom dealings might be going on there. Perhaps it's this zoos attempt to keep the heat off themselves and the bloodthirsty AR wolves at bay, trying to placate their own enemy by diverting negative attention to their elephant stewarding and training bretheren in the circus. Or maybe an attempt to put away competition for the dollars of families who eagerly go to see and connect with these types of animals. By removing choice from their community while posturing themselves as somehow superior, they may hope to increase business by inheriting Ringling's market share. But there are many zoos and highly legitimate conservations and organizations who have cooperative relationships with the professionals at Ringling. They respect them and know well about this manufactured AR propaganda, as the exact same thing is done to them by the very same people.
What you are reading here, implied in the article and described in the comments couldn't be further from anyone's sincere concern about the care, training methods and future of these elephants, their species, or any other. It's about the Animal Rights doctrine at the core of devious national orgs like HSUS and PETA, and their determination to end all animal entertainment as a step towards even more outlandish intentions. It's about the malevolent, destructive, Machiavellian depths they will go to try to ruin earnest and talented people, force the abandonment of well loved, safe, secure, contented animals, and emotionally blackmail the public into funding and driving their own legal separation from them. We should all have had quite enough of this by now. It's time to expose this nasty but lucrative game that plays for keeps using animals, the public's sensitivities, our normal, healthy ways of life and our freedoms as its pawns.
"Circus come to Town" - Disgusting exploitation of animals for profit. More and more cities are banning the performance of wild animals for a very good reason. Educate yourself to see what happens to these intelligent giants. There is no excuse for not knowing about the abuse!
The Circus industry would have died decades ago if people knew what we know about the animal abuse that occurs to train wild animals to perform unnatural tricks.
David please call me. I'm misquoted. Ellen
I will give a thousand dollars to any person who can demonstrate the ability to beat an elephant into submission. Common sense has left the house! The ankh is a an ancient tool used to give signals to elephants as part of a training process. Elephant skin is SO thick that a hand signal doesn't get through. No one has done more to support research about elephants and elephant conservation than Feld Entertainment, and children who see an elephant live in the circus grow up to be people who want to preserve this wonderful species.
Isn't it time that all animals are banned from the circus. Ringling do the right thing, do the compassionate thing and stop this horrid, shameful, sad show. We don't want to see cruelty anymore. Mrs Gibson McElhane please!!! what a stupid, thoughtless and insulting statement, even families with low income know better than to go see elephants being tortured and abused by bullhooks.
Love the Circus let's ban Libby!
hmm a "bull hook real name "ankus" is just a small tool there is no "spear" ever hear the expression "thick as an elephants hide" ? well it is true . a small ankus is a too that is all.. have you trained you dog by positive reinforcement? if you have then I guess you have not need of a leash when you take them on walks..no collar need as well.. after all they can be hurt by these tools Your dog loves you right.. he does not need any tools to control him when out in public.. elephants are the same.. Feld brings money to Oakland.. lots of it.. guess all of you here will give Oakland the $$ it w
ill be missing.. meanwhile Feld is the largest conservator of elephants in the world. Go to the circus enjoy the show and know that none of these elephants have been "ripped from their families " and they enjoy what they do and that they have a great life. a better life than many citizens of Oakland and it children
How about doing a "little research" on the abuse those animals suffer at the hands of their so-called caretakers. The reason those animals pose a threat at all is because they have been stolen from their families and homes, beaten down until their spirits break, and then forced to tolerate crowds of loud and rowdy humans day after day as well as being confined to tiny pens for transport constantly. This is Not the natural life of an elephant. They need space and to have those they love near them. We've stolen their lives, their very reasons for breathing.
The problem here isn't how to keep them calm and safely behaving around humans without the use of bull hooks. The problem is that we are keeping them at all. Ban all animal use period.
