Re: “Buffet Bargain at East Oakland's Soul's Restaurant

"At Soul's, most of the brunch buffet options ranged somewhere between "not bad" and "fine"

Question? how much Soulfood have you eaten in your life?
Cause everything at SOUL'S is more than Satisfying.

This is how Af-Am Families cook at home ( BTW: grits are served traditionally thick... if you serve soupy or thin grits to black folks they will be mad)
Not just on the holiday's... but everyweek.

Re: “Down-Home Lao at Vientian Cafe

Luke - not that it's of any particular import, but those aren't rice noodles in nam kao; it's julienned pork skin.

Re: “A Grocery Store for West Oakland?

downtownsarabrown: You have to be a California resident. There's a little bit more information in my original blog post (http://www.eastbayexpress.com/WhatTheFork/…).

And, of course, a lot more on the PCM website (http://peoplescommunitymarket.com/buy-shar…).

Re: “A Grocery Store for West Oakland?

Can you please share more information on the Direct Public Offering campaign? How people might find more information? And do you have to live in the community to invest in it?

Re: “Measure J and the Future of OUSD's School Lunch Program

@David: The bond measure is not just for school food facilities. See the ballot measure language below excerpted from smartvoter.org. http://www.smartvoter.org/2012/11/06/ca/al…

"To improve the quality of Oakland schools and school facilities to better prepare students for college and jobs, to upgrade science labs, classrooms, computers and technology, improve student safety and security, repair bathrooms, electrical systems, plumbing and sewer lines, improve energy efficiency and earthquake safety, shall the Oakland Unified School District be authorized to issue $475 million in bonds, with an independent citizens oversight committee and annual audits to guarantee funds are spent properly to benefit Oakland children?"

If we want better schools and better school food in Oakland, we are going to have to pay for them. Yes on Measure J!

Re: “Measure J and the Future of OUSD's School Lunch Program

The District says it needs $44 million to upgrade food facilities, but it's seeking authority to borrow more than 10 times that amount -- $475 million (that's not a typo). The author of the article, like the the ballot language, neglects to mention that Measure J will saddle households with hundreds of dollars in additional taxes every year for decades. Not only that, if the District's assumptions prove wrong, the taxes could skyrocket down the road. Upgrading the physical conditions of Oakland's schools is a laudable goal. However, the District needs to be more honest with and protective of taxpayers. Since the District has not done so, vote no on Measure J.

Re: “The Pub Life, Korean-Style

Andi, we thought about ordering the soup earlier, at Kang Tong Degi, but got scared off when our server said she'd never even tasted it. She said she couldn't get past the smell.

Re: “I Dream of Sushi Sho

I don't know how anybody could refer to Aki as a Sushi Nazi given how humble he is. He might politely explain things, or explain why things are not done, but he's not the "no sushi for you!" type by any means. I remember one time when a customer asked for suggestions, and then told Aki that he could put his [suggested item] where the sun don't shine. Aki smiled and asked if he could suggest something else.

Re: “The Pub Life, Korean-Style

Sweet article! I couldn't finish the chrysalis soup either: it smelled like fermented peppers mixed with dirt. They have really great kimchi pancakes though. 8)

Re: “The Mountain Is Free

although outside of EBX's coverage area, the SF Nature Friend's Tourist Club is awesome. You have to walk at least a quarter of a mile to get to it, but you'll feel especially accomplished if you opt for the 40 minute hike, which involves climbing the never-ending Dipsea Steps in Mill Valley and hiking along a cliffside path which made me feel like I was in Lord of the Rings.

And they do TO GO. so call and pick it up and take it home. They don't keep you from experiencing this by waiting in a line. Think like a Brooklynite and get yours to GO.

Re: “Italian-American Charm and Garlicky Flavor Bombs at Trattoria La Siciliana

Gerry and Angelo are my brothers from another momma in Brooklyn. Each time I come here, I'm jettisoned back home. Favors of Brooklyn Italian-American food is an essential staple of a loving upbringing and I grew up eating this kind of food since culturally everyone in NY has an opportunity to eat culturally authentic cuisines. I love the red sauce seafood dsh they mention, it tastes like Christmas Eve in Brooklyn. I come when I'm homesick and it takes me there.
