Re: “Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson Hit in Face with Pie at Event, Assaults Protester in 'Bloody' Scene

Was directed to this story by USAToday, when they attributed facts to "alternative weekly newspaper East Bay Express" on the front page of the sports section last Friday. Isn't USAToday distributed nationally? Not too shabby.

Re: “Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson Hit in Face with Pie at Event, Assaults Protester in 'Bloody' Scene

It's about time someone took down one of these pie-throwing douchebags. That's the assault here. Johnson simply defended himself. For all he knew, this dumbass could've had a gun.

Re: “Plan Would Require City of Oakland To Be Part Owner of Any New Marijuana Business

Shame on Oaktown! The City is already "profiting" from unlawful businesses (dispensaries) "selling" the controlled substance marijuana by "taxing" the illegal activities! Now they want 25% ownership too, I'd like to hear them explain to Uncle Sam and the IRS how a governmental entity can blatantly violate current state law and federal law! Can't anyone see what the hell is going on here in California? They'll put individuals and organization lives, assets and livelihoods at risk of potential prosecution just so they can "cash in on our use"! Our own lawmakers have turned the "Compassionate Use Act" upside down and made it the "Compensation from our Use Act"! Wake up cannabis community and smell what our local and state governments are cooking! California has created its own drug cartel from the grey area they created, if you can't beat the "black market" just form your own "grey market" and take over the industry with corporate and government greed!

Sincerely Concerned,

A once fine department. Most of the good officers have fled the turd pile known as the city of Oakland.

Re: “The Vanishing Underground: Oakland's Housing Crisis Is Also Displacing its Arts and Music Counterculture

I appreciate the value of your article, but have to take issue that Prime Gallery is named among artist collectives that "threw late-night events without attracting law-enforcement attention." They're characterized as this underground venue that was nurturing of a diverse community, and portrayed as victims of neighbors who watched them as though under a telescope.

This is a gross misrepresentation of this particular scene, which was comprised of teens and early 20 somethings that would leave shattered liquor bottles for blocks around. Kids from the parties would tag on residences, local businesses, and neighborhood murals. In less than a year, the small gatherings had escalated into weekly block parties that would prevent traffic from passing and would bring cops well into the morning hours. Neighbors confronted them several times, particularly after gun shots were fired.

It is true that eventually they were removed from the space. Tragically, this was not before their August eviction party culminated in the murders of two young men. Prime Gallery should not be portrayed as a loss to Oakland's art and music culture - it was an inevitable explosion that was not diffused in time.

Very nice and informative article here. I was searching for the same form some time ago and found a great service with a huge forms library. By the way, if anyone is facing a problem of filling FL 12.928, I've found a template here http://pdf.ac/2KTAwL. You also can esign the form and fax it.

Re: “Critic Accuses Oakland Leaders of Failing to Report Police Department Sex-Crime Scandal to District Attorney

To the Editor and EBX Readers:
The headline and entire premise of the story are based on incorrect information.
The story reports that the Court’s order requires “city leaders” including the Mayor, City Attorney and City Administrator to report to the District Attorney reasonable suspicion that an officer committed a felony or serious misdemeanor.
However, that is not true.
As you can see from a quick reading of the relevant section of the order (it’s only two sentences), the requirement doesn’t apply to or even mention the Mayor, City Attorney or City Administrator, nor does it apply to the Court-appointed Monitor/Compliance Director or plaintiffs’ attorneys John Burris and James Chanin.
I’m writing for the sole purpose of fact checking so your readers know that the whole story is based on a misreading or perhaps a misrepresentation of the order.
Here is the entire section:
“OPD shall develop a policy to report, as soon as possible, evidence of criminal misconduct by a member/employee to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office for their review and collaboration. Said report to the District Attorney shall be made when there is reasonable suspicion to believe the member/employee has been involved in a felony or serious misdemeanor.”
Your reporters only quote the second sentence, so readers don’t know that the first sentence disproves Mr. Chanin’s accusations against “city leaders” right out of the gate.
The Court order is unambiguous that the police department reports to the DA when investigators have reasonable suspicion that an officer has committed a felony or serious misdemeanor.
I ask that you correct the inaccurate language in the story that states “the decree required … city leaders to notify the district attorney.”
And at a minimum the story should note that the actual language of the order contradicts Mr. Chanin’s accusations against the City Attorney and other city leaders.

Chief of Staff
Oakland City Attorney's Office

Re: “Low-Level Cops Facing Punishment in East Bay Sex Crimes Scandal

Let me start off by saying I am pro-law enforcement. That being said, I was troubled by this story. I'd say most cops, no matter the department, are good people. There's no way you can convince me of anything else. Repeated stories of misconduct understandably make people question their faith, but I'll stand firm in mine. Anything that is presented as systematic, definitely starts at the top. The low-level boots on the ground, unfortunately suffer the brunt of the consequences. Case and point, but totally unrelated, WELLS FARGO!! To whom much is given, much is required. Law enforcement will have to find a way, QUICKLY, to meet the requirements of those who are starting to hold them accountable. "Because I said so," is no longer going to cut it. Cops across the board will have to deal with the ill-consequences and misperceptions.

Re: “Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson Hit in Face with Pie at Event, Assaults Protester in 'Bloody' Scene

I'm simply at a loss parenthetically not surprised by the anti black comments... Why do some find their best response is to say Go Back You Africa? That's easy to say Mr. Mertz... Let's see Poland is it, yes that's the origin of your name. Holocaust right? Your people fled, right? Ummmm... I'm guessing you're angry by now as you should be because that was a horrible act against humanity and America help Save and continues to support you by honoring those who died and those who survived. But your people fled to a country built on the backs of Slaves who didn't ask to come nor wanted to or NEEDED to like yours. So by your logic let's all return from whence we can and give the Indiana their land back... Dumbass. As far as the sexual applications, Johnson should have never permitted himself to be in a place of probability but in this country we ALL are innocent until proven guilty. Don't get upset when the law of justice actually works for a non-white. Lastly, yes he's a public official, but first he's a man. I CERTAINLY doubt any man of any public office, or a simple husband, father etc. would not punch a person who has escalated from heckling to physical assault. If any of you are willing to eat his pie.... Then go get some in your face.

Re: “Soda Industry Spent $67 Million Fighting Sugar Taxes and Health Labels Since 2009

The product and political approach of Big Soda both have much in common with those of Big Tobacco. The playbook includes silence on the reality of the health-damaging effects of the product, distraction, deflection, and, of course, the ever-popular Big Lie.

Mr. O’Hara’s comment is insightful and relevant in that one of the memes that Big Soda has inserted by into the conversation is the canard that a soda tax is ineffective in achieving its goal of reducing sugary beverage consumption. Of course, big soda feels no need to be consistent in their arguments. Anything their strategists think may be effective will do just fine.

The particulars of the Big Soda campaign in Oakland feature wrapping themselves in the false flag of concern about the welfare of economically disadvantaged communities (who knew they cared about regressive taxes?). And then there’s the pushing of the recently manufactured “grocery tax” lie out of the mouths of recruited minority business owners (amazing how they all thought up the same argument!), with, of course, colorful contextual images of fresh fruit and so on.
