Re: “Oakland Fire Department Hits Hills Homeowners With Erroneous Inspection Bills

This is what you should do when you make a mistake, Campbell Washington said about the departments new plan

What they should do is compensate citizens for the systemic time-burn created by their errors and omissions. Only then will there be real change, as presently there are no consequences to their issuing false fines and fees. A citizen not having to pay an unjust fee or fine that they never should have charged in the first is hardly a win.

Here's a thought - work with your community and educate them on fire safety - and communicate clearly what the rules are. I am shocking how many up here are enraged, confused or stressed about this matter

Meanwhile - the City cannot fill pot holes, resolve homeless camps or illegal dumping or clean up their own lots, and we do not see them "fining themselves" do we? Instead we see their acting CEOs (Chief Excuse Officers) providing various "messaging" about why they cannot or will not fix things.

Re: “After Anheuser-Busch Buyout Of Wicked Weed, Is It Time To Retire The Term 'Craft Beer'?

I despise the Bay Area's "hoppier than thou" approach to beer, but even more annoyed when something I love is bought by InBev - Goose Island's purchase in 2011 broke my heart.

Re: “A New Plan For Oakland’s Planning Commission

"We want an Oakland for all. Currently, planning commissioners are appointed by the mayor and confirmed by City Council, our elected representatives.

"Too often, these nomination decisions are made behind closed doors and benefit both their personal friends and political donors."

Well put. Oakland needs to elect a Mayor and Council Members who serve the ordinary people of Oakland, all of them, not just the wealthy and priviledged, out-of-towners and transplants. Those folks can take care of
themselves, and do.

Re: “Supporter of Controversial Israeli Settlements Would Benefit from Exclusive Oakland Public Land Deal

+Mitchell Halberstadt
So what about nearly every israeli PM to date ? aren't they "an embarrassment to you, as a Jew" ? you should be getting used to it by now !
But apart from that, why are entities - people - not supposed to take a position on issues ? - particularly mass murder and mega-theft.
So Zimmerman's "little operation" supports the extreme right - what's new there ?
You sound such a well-intentioned guy.

Re: “UC Berkeley Energy and Climate Scientist Backs Students' Call for University to Divest from Fossil Fuel Corporations

This is such good news. What with the Fukoshima ongoing horror quietly out of the spotlight, and the rate of thinning of the Polar ice, it seems it's past high time to get serious with these greedy imbeciles and their darling President TrUmp.

Re: “Supporter of Controversial Israeli Settlements Would Benefit from Exclusive Oakland Public Land Deal

This article is another fantastic piece of journalism by Darwin Bondgraham. After winning a Polk award earlier this year, Bondgraham continues to inform Oakland/East Bay residents with writing that reflects humanity and mindfulness (not simple robot reporting).

Do East Bay residents want to know whether a local city government is making deals with a developer who is actively contributing large sums of money to efforts that undermine the security of Israel and Palestine and break international law? Why yes, they do!

Is this information relevant to all of us who want to know how and where our local community has an impact globally? You bet.

Should our local governments be making investments and property deals with individuals or organizations involved in efforts such as this? No, they should not. And thank you Darwin Bondgraham for informing us of this.

The settlement movement: is illegal, makes Israel less safe, makes Palestine less safe, and makes us all, in this hyper-connected world, less safe.

Investments are not simply business decisions they are connected to ethics and politics. Anyone getting upset at a journalist making ethical connections (and not reporting like a robot) echos the bully club of the Donald administration and their attack on reporters and news they dont want exposed.

Thanks for connecting the dots Darwin.

Re: “Neighbors Along One Fruitvale Street Are Organizing to Stop a Controversial Eviction

Simon-Weisberg is right: the city needs to do more! This article is great, and reads like a crime story ... but what is the city doing to stop this criminal preying on innocent renters. This landlord is committing fraud.

Re: “Supporter of Controversial Israeli Settlements Would Benefit from Exclusive Oakland Public Land Deal

I don't think Oakland ought to be taking a position on the Israeli settlements -- but I'm disturbed that Zimmerman has contributed money to David Horowitz, a right-wing bigot that I consider an embarrassment to me as a Jew.

Re: “Oakland's Daol Tofu Offers Variety And Comfort By Way Of Korea

The seafood tofu stew was better at Casserole House, and is also superior at Bowl'd BBQ. We judged Daol's to be equal but not better than Gangnam Tofu. Daol's seafood pancake is too fluffy and bland; it actually is better held overnight for the flavors to blend.

Re: “Dan Savage: Dan Responds To Reader Questions From An Appearance in PDX

I believe anybody that owns 100% of your heart is worth fighting for. Yes, I am boasting because I never adhered to some negative advice from my parents when I was about getting married. There was a war between our two family then because my husband was his mother puppy, his family members used him a lot that he cant make any decision without consulting them. What surprised me most was the moment a 36-year-old man seeks his parent and some family members consent before dating anyone, the worst happened when he was instructed to bring me along to their country home in N. Rampart, New Orleans, it was risky to accept such invitation.
The war between our families started when he finally proposed (that was about 4 years ago), his family gave some conditions if he must wife me (we have to live with them), I was in shock when my husband accepted and was happy with their conditions (so crazy). My family wagged and demanded I should breakup with him immediately.
I decided to give him the last shot as a man whom has already taken over 100% of my heart, I took a risk to go spiritual with them by consulting Dr. Wakina via, I dont know how but the spiritual father already knew I was going to consult him. He first of all told me danger I was into and how my husband has been enslaved since birth, how they keep brain washing him to do their wills.
Like the quote that says a person sees clearly only with the heart, I realized that nobody saw what I sees in my husband and thats why I used the help of Dr. Wakina to put him out of his misery. His eyes where opened by Dr. Wakina for the first time, his family fell in love with me and granted every of our request, our families have known peace since after the love spell. It is over 2 years after the love spell and my husband has continued to improve every day without interference from his family. I have waited too long to share this amazing piece. Thanks for your time and also to Dr. Wakina. I knew him through ready some amazing testimonies on blogs.

Re: “Town Business: Marijuana Is the Most Common Bust Oakland Cops Make When They Search Someone

Interesting information but difficult to fully understand its meaning.

It does seem to go along with essential police department dysfunction also reflected in poor department morale, ongoing ethical challenges, very expensive officer turnover (still half a dozen cops quit every month?) and failure to deal adequately with serious crime.

Thus also it goes along with a public safety policy vacuum (responsiblity of the Council to shape and formalize policy and responsibility of Mayor and Administrator to propose and implement policy).

Public safety and policing in Oakland are difficult challenges to say the least. If the Council and the Mayor were simply to admit this and to affirm publicly they have no idea how to proceed, that could at least begin a productive conversation.

Unfortunately mum's the word in Oakland.

Re: “Why So Many Bisexual Men are Still in the Closet

I agree with Matt S' comment above. Except for me I have tried coming out many times over the years. My Girlfriend of 25 years knows and sometimes is cool with it, sometimes not. I've told friends and family before and they were accepting about it at first but over time marginalized my experience by either saying I was gay or that I was looking for drama. There is so much drama in my life already and I don't see why someone would think I wanted to purposely add more to the pile. Also, I am closeted about my lifetime of experience with gender disphoria and it seems like I have gone through so much pain in my life already because of both issues that acting on either of these issues let alone both would be, one- confusing for my loved ones and associates and two- would mean even more constant pain and work for me. I've chosen to hide because of this. I don't know if I'll ever really be honest and open with myself and the world. I want to try. Lucky I live in the Bay Area and have an understanding partner. Bi men need more visibility and I hate that I might be perpetuating the problem.

Re: “Supporter of Controversial Israeli Settlements Would Benefit from Exclusive Oakland Public Land Deal

The City should be making decisions on investments and property deals based on benefits returned to Oakland residents and to the City. There is no consensus among Oakland residents and taxpayers on BDS and Israel's settlement policies. I do not support the policies of the current Israeli administration including its settlement policies and I think David Horowitz, one of the recipients of Zimmerman's largesse, is despicable. Nevertheless, if evaluating every City decision based on the political views of the parties we may be on a very slippery slope.
