Re: “The Veg Hub in Oakland Cooks Fake Meat for the People

What sweet irony! If this review is any indication, Daniel Patterson and Roy Choi could take a lesson from Mr. Chew!

This place has evidently succeeded at everything Locol (for all its pretension) claims it's trying to do -- with a vegan angle to boot -- in a neighborhood where it matters.

Talk about poetic (and social) justice!

Re: “Oakland Officials Question Police Partnerships with Federal Immigration Agents and FBI

The City absolutely needs to make sure that Oakland Police play NO role in assisting ICE or any other agency that detains our people for deportation. We are a SANCTUARY City, and we have to be sure that means something!

Re: “Biff’s Coffee Shop In Oakland Was Googie Glory

It's not just Biff's... The old Kwik Way is threatened. And SpaceBurger just closed for redevelopment. Most of these projects are cheap low-rise apartments or condos. Yes we need housing, but we're losing some of the character of Oakland. Soon it will look like any generic medium-sized city in the US.

Re: “Developer Stiffs City on Permits for West Oakland Condo Project

No doubt this is a bad look for the developer (Madison Park). On it's face, it looks like the developer or demolition contractor tried to skirt the fees and the required permit process. At the same time, it is not unbelievable that a demolition contractor might have had to scramble to get barriers to block sidewalks and streets. Also believable is that those barriers came from another job site and the crew failed to remove the signs. My question has more to do with why the City of Oakland Building Department did not review a plan and require the permits for sidewalk and street closures when they initially issued the demolition permit? Additionally, if there is ongoing work on the site (grading, demolition) under permit, why was it that it was neighbors who noticed the signs and not city building inspectors? It may just be been another example of the lack of coordination between city departments (Building and Public Works).

Re: “Oakland Officials Question Police Partnerships with Federal Immigration Agents and FBI

Someone needs to talk to all those folks with fancy titles who hang out in city hall about OPD, the Oakland Police Department, which is, in fact, an actual, official, Department of the city government of the city of Oakland.

Thus whatever OPD does is fundamentally the responsibility of those elected folks with fancy titles.

If the fancy-titled electeds don't know what OPD does, then what the hell are those folks doing?

Some things they are not doing is providing for the public safety, insuring ethical behavior in OPD and making sure OPD reforms mandated nearly 15 years ago are fully implemented. Not to mention being responsible for whatever OPD does with regard to protecting Oaklanders from ICE and whatever Trump comes up with.

Maybe we need a new city commission like the new Police Commission. This new commission would oversee what the fancy-titled electeds in city hall do with all their time.

Re: “Letters of the Week: 'Baconslut,' Single-Payer Health Care, and More

Jerry, and other people that fall for these right wind talking points, are ultimately spending a lot more money than they would be if we had a better welfare state. They'd rather be spiteful about those in dire straits than realize how much of their tax dollars go to making the rich richer, and how little those rich people pay.

Re: “Why Black Students Are Avoiding UC Berkeley

I have 2 sons, graduates of UC Berkeley & Princeton, respectively. An Ivy League education opens doors that a Berkeley education does not. Plus, several of the Ives (& Stanford) offer 'no loan' generous financial packages to all their students, regardless of race.
A black student admitted to one of those schools would have to either be crazy or scared to leave home to not take advantage of such a wonderful opportunity.
As a Cal graduate myself, I can say that Cal has always been very hard on their students. It's like a 'survival test'.
On the other hand, a school like Princeton goes out of their way to provide an encouraging environment for their students.
Cal needs to admit the next level of black students and give them good support. They aren't going to win the top black students in a bidding war with Harvard. Face it.

Re: “City of Oakland Replaces Longstanding Coliseum-Oracle Board Members With Uber Lawyer, McElhaney

it never seems to matter who is on the board. I would just like them to hold the Dubs feet to the fire. There was a lot of money paid into expanding Oracle in 97. They are obligated, take them to court. They are not going to be tenents much longer.

We are as human as you are.. Its not what you are that counts, but how you choose to be. Do you want a life full of interesting things? Do you want to have power and influence over others? Re: “Oakland Officials Question Police Partnerships with Federal Immigration Agents and FBI

The loopholes in our so-called sanctuary city ate big enough to drive a couple ICE vans through. The city needs to take charge of OPD agreements and keep its promise to its residents.

Re: “The Veg Hub in Oakland Cooks Fake Meat for the People

I am excited to try the Veg hub and live nearby. But I feel the need to correct an inaccuracy. The Veg Hub did not replace MacDonalds. The Dimond MacDonalds was in the space next door, and it did indeed close. In timing, yes the Veg Hub opened as the MacDonalds closed, but not in the same space. Point being, another fast food restaurant is likely to open up next door.
As a comment. I think it is cool that the Veg Hub has reasonable hours for workers, but they are making it difficult for customers. They do not open until noon. My wife and I would eat lunch there once a week at 11:30 if they were open then, but instead we go elsewhere. I think they miss out on early lunch business. And not being open on Fri, Sat and Sun is ridiculous for a restaurant in this location. Those would be the busiest days for a restaurant in this location. They should be closed on Mon, Tues.

Re: “The Veg Hub in Oakland Cooks Fake Meat for the People

My partner and I were excited to try out VegHub and it was some of the best food we've ever had in the East Bay. We didn't experience ANY homophobia, or anything other than total welcoming hospitality. I consider myself an ethical vegan, too, and would never generalize or punish a business based on what I assume about their beliefs. And they are a black-owned business whose employees feel the shorter work week is humane and conducive to a more joyful life. I will support them 1) because the food is cruelty-free and INCREDIBLE. And also because we need to support businesses owned by people of color. Those reasons outweigh anything I might presume about their religious beliefs.
