Re: “Oakland Council Thumbs Its Nose At Voters

Indeed, the attempt to racialize the report on Gibson-McElheney is counterproductive. On the other hand, the EBX seems to have it in for her: as I wrote earlier, it's a peculiar vendetta, most likely with political motives. #LifeMatters,NotItsColor

Re: “Fatal System Error

I don't quite understand. If the health care professionals are being paid for their time and service, why are there always issues of people not receiving the care that is deserved and required. Are the patients being judged because they are low-income and therefore deemed not deserving of the proper care? How dare it be decided that a person does not deserve the best just because they happen to not be able to afford a "better" type health insurance. It's a sad day when the health care professional loses sight of why they entered this field in the first place. I would like to believe that it's was for the love of helping people. What would the other reason be? I'm sure the professionals have some legitimate complaints about business politics, but again it seems that the love of helping people should reign over it all.

Re: “Oakland Council Thumbs Its Nose At Voters

The attempt to racialize the report on Gibson-McElheney's ethical behavior is counterproductive. G-M, like all Oakland Council members, is the preferred pol of Oakland's largely-white, but diverse, elite. Her elitism is what defines her, and her colleagues, not her ethnicity.

The bottom line is how well G-M and other members of the Council crew serve those Oakland in Oakland most in need or otherwise deserving. Oakland's electeds largely serve themselves and their "careers."

Indeed, if the East Bay Express would devote just a smidgen of effort to reporting on the actual accomplishments in office, that is, real problems solved, by Oakland's electeds, it would be clear exactly why Oakland cannot ever move ahead. The elected folks in city hall are, at best, mediocre and in their totality, all add up to by far the worst government in the Bay Area. This is the fact that needs full discussion in our "media."

Re: “Gay Priest Ousted By Conservative Bishop

why is a priest declaring he is gay. It doesn't matter what he is, he's a priest and doesn't have sexual relationships. Something is not clear and only part of the story is told.

Re: “Oakland Council Thumbs Its Nose At Voters

Why do you have such a hard-on to disgrace & discredit Lynette Gibson McElhaney?
It's politics, man; notorious for doing things in a manner to make friends to progress its cause. She is no different. What matters is that she does what she says she is going to do when we voted her in. I was present at all of the speeches, in which she was made aware of our issues. As I wrote in response to your other piece on LGM:
....If she continues to not do the things she's promised in D3 (clean up the streets from Grand to 40th; close down at least half of these damn churches, halfway houses, homeless shelters and single person rooms and disperse them throughout Oakland; implement a shopping cart "return-to-owner" system to get them off our damn streets (none of these so-called homeless people have ever purchased an effing shopping cart to push through the streets of Oakland); and get some real businesses here in our neighborhood, then YES she should be ousted.
Until such time as a lack of action on her part to clean up and revitalize District 3 comes to pass, I don't think making this personal action to kill Councilwoman McElhaney's career is prudent; she is popular for a reason sir.
The fact that other politicians have had a four hundred year head-start in conniving, and manipulating the system to make it work in their favor, and LGM is a quick study in said system, shouldn't make you single her out. Go after all the others with the same gusto and you'll see their crap is there as well, just better hidden.
@shake Anderson (I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this has gotten personal.

Re: “Waterfront Advocates, Local Regulators Fight for Marsh Restoration at Brooklyn Basin

So the Army Core of Engineers doesn't want the Brooklyn Basin Developers to develop the marsh on their property because they will only have the deed for 66 yrs. After that their obligation to care for the marsh will expire and who then will be responsible? So instead, they should develop a marsh on someone else's property! Don't they see the illogical argument they are proposing?

Re: “The Challenge of 2015: Affordable Housing

Affordable housing wasn't an issue until the state's population exceeded the carrying capacity of the land. Many middle class families lived in Cleveland Heights and nearby neighborhoods in the 1910s, 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s.

Re: “Oakland Council Thumbs Its Nose At Voters

Honestly, this is beginning to look personal. And slightly prejudice and stupid, why dont yall investigate Measure Y funds .... And the decrease in the black population of Oakland in the last 10 years, the same 10 years Measure Y has been in place. Oh, that probably isnt as important as exposing a council members personal finances. EBX is continually proving itself to be bias especially with people of color. #BlackLivesMatter

Re: “Oakland Council Thumbs Its Nose At Voters

This is very discouraging news indeed.

I believe what the Good Book say:
“One who is faithful with little will also be faithful with much, and one who is dishonest with little will also dishonest with much."

I suggest a silent protest at every city council meeting.

Re: “Oakland Council Thumbs Its Nose At Voters

E. Arnoldo: "If indeed there are more serious violations than allegations of "house-flipping for profit."

House flipping for profit isn't illegal. It's just ethically-questionable because flipping is part of the process of adding more air to the real estate bubble. Translation: making housing less rather than more affordable.

Two other ethical challenges for Council member McEnerney which are also clearly illegal: failure to pay income taxes. Yes there are fines for this illegal behavior which no doubt McEnerney will have have to pay. And there is failure to file political disclosure documents. Just plain unethical and illegal.

Yep, we all do illegal things like get parking tickets. Our care in parking our cars isn't the same as our care in meeting our obligations as citizens, or, heaven forbid, as elected officials standing in and reflecting all that glorious sunlight.

Important distinctions for many of us, if not for Sr. Arnoldo.

Re: “Yelp and the Business of Extortion 2.0

It seems to me that Yelp should be investigated by the Federal Trade Commission for deceptive practices and unfair business practices. Why don't they just display all the reviews- they have suppressed 23 of my top reviews-when I wouldn't advertise. But there is no way to call them or write them and complain. They make it hard to reach them and they do not respond. They don't explain how they rate true verses not recommended reviews. I wouldn't care about 2 negative reviews if the 23 positive reviews were viewable.

Re: “Oakland Council Thumbs Its Nose At Voters

Ms. McElhaney probably lost my vote with her trying to guilt the anti-bullhook people for wasting the council's precious time with such an "unimportant" issue. Because no issues your constituents bring you are "unimportant," or not your job to deal with. That said, "hand in the till" is a big stretch for what's being described here.

Re: “Oakland Council Thumbs Its Nose At Voters

Clearly, the defenders of Gibson selectively ignore the facts, obscure the truth, and form a circle around her that smells of hypocracy. On the face of it, with no denials from Gibson, her behavior violated many basic ethical standards we expect of public servants. With apologists openly insinuating racist motives, like referring to "White Knights", the vary people who scream for tolerance and truth being told are muddying the waters. By closing ranks around Gibson, they reinforce the impression that a black politician can do no wrong, even when their hand is in the till. Shame! I've lost a lot of respect for those who defend her practices.

Re: “The Sexism of the Theater World

About 80% of the statue awards, given by BayAreaDanceWatch, go to women – about the same percentage breakdown of female local dancers performing in SF Bay dance scene. Some of the awards are for theater and acting as well. We are especially happy about that 80% because most of the large dance companies in the US are run by men. So we’re doing our small part to help make up for that unevenness on the national scene by doing it here in the local scene. Most of the awards are given out at our annual event & our third one is this Jan 25th in SF entitled: LiveBlessay 2014 – An Evening Affair. One final note - BADw tried to award both actor/actress from Shotgun Players Bonnie & Clyde - but because they were out of the country last year we could not get it arranged. The play was that good & it had the best blending of multi-media with live performances I've ever seen.... BRAVEE to all there.... Jim Tobin, BADw....
