Re: “A Second Transbay Link Is Inevitable — but Will It Be Equitable?

I'm so tired of the likes of the Bay Area Council and SPUR, acting like they represent the residents of the Bay Area. They don't. One is a business advocacy group and the other has an activist urbanism agenda. Thank these guys for Plan Bay Area, and the movement to regional taxation and unelected regulators making choices for us.

Re: “Downtown Berkeley

Hello guys. At the risk of sounding too promotional, I would like to recommend an alternate computer store. I have been consistently using the services from http://macrepairberkeley.com/">Mac Repair Berkeley and they have been really amazing! Compared to the service linked in the above list, the prices are quite lower and the services are top-notch.

My business partners needed to fill out CA CDPH 0929 some time ago and came across a document management site that hosts a huge forms library . If people are searching for CA CDPH 0929 too , here's https://goo.gl/XCS41J

Re: “A Second Transbay Link Is Inevitable — but Will It Be Equitable?

Yes, Bruce F., it does matter who does the shooting. Reason: several white shooters like Zimmerman have gotten off by claiming that the confrontation with a black man put them in fear of their life -- the legal standard, especially for policemen. Inconceivable a black person could get away with this.

I appreciate this griot's expanded view. He had the ability to take me with him on this journey. I felt as if I walked with him as the picture he painted was brilliant. So very sorry for this tragedy.

Re: “A Second Transbay Link Is Inevitable — but Will It Be Equitable?

Vivian, I've lived in Oakland for over 20 years now and I'm born and bred in the east bay a long time ago. I saw Oakland when it had a functioning downtown (only now reviving). I saw crony politicians line their pockets when BART construction was allowed to strangle downtown, just as it did in Richmond. I watched Don Perata and others spend much needed city dollars to line the pockets of the owners of the Raiders in the name of "civic pride".

Let's see... There was a gun battle downtown, just outside city hall a few weeks back, mid-day no less. Working girls are obvious on international even after the "Celest Guape"/OPD debacle. There was also the mysterious fire at an almost completed development just off of West MacArthur a few months back. The city council member who used city resource to tamper with development s/he didn't like. That all sounds VERY lawful to me.

And yes it IS better. San Pablo avenue is no longer infested with drug dealers 24/7. I hear fewer gun shots now. There is development going on all over the place in spite the obstructionist activity of "social justice warriors" who are against any improvements that don't solve all problems perfectly the first time out or don't directly serve some neighborhood or other.

And Dave D, you're absolutely correct, no housing built does make gentrification worse not better. Yes, like it or not, supply and demand ARE a factor that can't be ignored or wished away.

Cars, per se, aren't the problem. Gas guzzling SUVs, monster trucks and what I like to refer to as land yachts are. Relatively cheap status symbols.

Replace them with bikes I hear you say and bike lanes. I dare you to safely carry the kids that way... Or transport groceries. I did that for a while too.

Unless we choose to go to densities that people seem to find unacceptable, it just doesn't work. Oddly those status symbols, at least in Oakland, seem to be more in the hands of people of color. so now we have another problem... The replacement of those working vehicles has a significant impact negative impact on the very population we're trying to help!

Transit, great idea. Show me the money to build AND maintain it. I pay my taxes, I'm sure you pay yours. Many don't and that most especially includes those pseudo citizens, corporations, who play property transfer games to avoid paying their fair share.

I know I don't have a whole lot of answers. I have a pretty good idea going after the latest administration is probably not the best idea.

Re: “A Second Transbay Link Is Inevitable — but Will It Be Equitable?

Oakland is a "lawless abandoned zone"? When did Bruce last look around Oakland? There's residential development underway in many parts of Oakland, crime rates are down, and the population citywide is higher than ever. The problem is that the increase in real estate prices is leaving many existing residents "out in the cold".

bart has more than enough capacity, they
have to learn longer trains, an extra 2-3 cars per train would solve many
problems, teach the public new ideas,
just don't remove seats for more standee's, maybe bart's hysterical board
should be forced to ride their wet dream, STANDING UP

Re: “Court-Appointed Attorney Taking Over Oakland Mayor’s Investigation of Mishandled OPD Sex-Scandal Case

The decdes old issue with the scandalous sexual play on & off duty with California Law Enforcement is across the board. Contra Costa County Sheriffs Department & infamous on & off duty play. Sheriff Hall "Chrous Practice" in the 1980's. Richmond Police. San Pablo Police. Santa Cruz. CHP. Colusa Sheriff Departments.

And just how can I do I know ? I was involved as a mistress, girlfriend, lay of choice, piece of #!/. And what happened after I finally found self esteem ? I was the only one punished. Some was reported back then however most was silenced. Especially the drunking escapades involving SWAT team members, not taking calls due to other priorities, and perjury laden cases.

great piece on where the fire stands in history on a personal level, but also in oakland's history. also simultaneously prompts us to think about how we can do better in the city of oakland.

Re: “Almodóvar Redeems Himself with Julieta

Not a single scene, in all its crayon box beauty, was believable. I had read other reviews that called it a melodrama but even then I was not prepared for how false this movie , supposedly delineating a woman's life (topic for another time-directors who supposedly make women's movies because we're such a distinct species ...remember Woody Allen?) and her guilt over, what, being mildly pissed that her husband had been bedding her friend all along and even though she knew that from the get.
I was also prepared for a bleak flick given the topic was the estrangement of a beloved daughter. But it was not believable so I simply didn't care. When it ended abruptly, I was just glad to go home to my warm house after sitting in a cold theater watching time pass.

Re: “A Second Transbay Link Is Inevitable — but Will It Be Equitable?

"The Bay Areas previous mega-projects, such as BARTs Transbay Tube and the federal highway systems, delivered access to top jobs, good schools, and healthy neighborhoods for predominantly white, affluent suburbanites."

What a load of bull. The Transbay Tube provides access to jobs for all people, regardless of skin color. BART has several stops in predominantly ethnic communities like West Oakland, Fruitvale, East Oakland, and Richmond. To say otherwise is to perpetuate alternative facts. Even suburban extensions to places like Pittsburg/Bay Point do a good job of serving non-white passengers.

The federal highway system allowed white flight, where people could live in suburban communities far from their jobs in the city. The suburbs provided the good schools and healthy neighborhoods, not the highways themselves. Nice try, though.

Building no housing at all makes gentrification worse than building new housing does. The basic economic concept of supply and demand applies whether you believe in it or not. So do we want transit-accessible gentrification, or do we want car-oriented gentrification that makes it even more difficult for displaced people to access their jobs and schools? I'll take the former, please.

Re: “'A Modern Day Ruin': A Writer On His Visits to the Ghost Ship Site

Geeee Whiz! We need housing. Lets make a piece of real estate into a useless shaking of fingers in the face of "the man". Ghost ship was operation before Mayor Schaaf came into office and by all reports for at least 3 administrations; complete with reported incidents that were not acted upon.

Call that corruption if you like, but also recall the "communities" efforts to stop investigations (slow to a halt) of other existing similar situations, fully supported by certain members of the city council supported by by the "community".

This isn't about about corrupt politics (of which there is much) but of a bunch of spoiled, over grown children wanting to deflect responsibility from themselves.

The more that I learn about the disorder and just plain incompetence of the Trump administration, the more I see parallels with Oakland's city hall.

Re: “A Second Transbay Link Is Inevitable — but Will It Be Equitable?

The plain and simple fact is the Oakland has been a lawless abandoned zone since the residential flight to the suburbs... That jobs mostly didn't follow.

Now it costs too much to live that far out and there is an awareness of the impact on the environment of doing that, so people want to live closer in. That means people won't tolerate the chaos that it has been.

The privileged crypto-anarachists who moved here and want no change are pitching well voiced arguments cast as social justice to obstruct needed change and improvements.

BAH!

By the way, lives DO matter. What doesn't matter is who is doing the shooting. It needs to STOP!
