That the owners are either born in west oakland or long term past oakland residents eases the blow of this existing. As a Black 20+ year resident of Oakland, driving past this store makes me sad. it's gentrification at its best. The city has little to no youth development in that area and a school with a long history that Oakland Unified School District is doing its best to destroy and dismantle. I want to wish them the best and most of me does but in these times, its addition to the neighborhood makes me want to scream! Now that from out-of-state white googlers and the like are driving Black folks out of west oakland there's a deli. Just great. Yay!!!

In was born and raised in Oakland, and live with my wife and kid in our home in the Laurel. The outrage in this page is ridiculous and misplaced. I've been waiting for a spot like this beer garden here for over 20 years. I can't wait for my family and I to become regulars there.

Isn't it also possible that more FOH employees at Kingston 11 are POC because their ethnicity matches that of the cuisine? Is that a reasonable consideration in hiring? (Genuine, not rhetorical, question.)

Come to think of it, do Asian servers (at Asian restaurants) count as POC? If so, I'm a bit surprised that Bay Area restaurants scored so low on equality. ;-)

The point of the article was given, as the writer really doesn't care if the dog are consumed or not. The writer's point was because someone in their circle with klout was engage in saving the animals Berkeley City Council had to get involved. Money always win.
For others, who are not aware. There are 11 Asian Countries that practice this event. If they would consume the Animal without torture. It would be acceptable. However, boiling puppies, kittens while still alive is not. Blow tourching them, gutting them, skinning them, cutting their limbs is not okay.
Oh, and to ruffle your feather even more, there is one single restaurant in California that does serve dog meat to its exclusive members.

Pigs are smarter and more trainable than dogs. They are even smarter than 3YO humans in cognition tests yet we still torture and eat them. Maybe these "activists" should focus on home fires before telling some other country what to eat.

The issue with the festival and the consumption of dog meat is the excessive use of torture to make the meat more "tender". Perhaps, berfore writing this article, you should have done more research regarding the techniques used on these animals.

I was enjoying the article until the ending when you described how living shrimp were tortured via being steamed to death and then you ate them. Would be curious to hear your justification for eating some animals, but not dogs?

I am an Arthropod Liberationist.

The torture and eating of shrimp, not to mention the abuse of cockroaches and termites, is a disgrace to human "civilization."

We are in consultation with the Oakland City Council and Mayor towards developing legislation to protect our disrespected and exploited Arthropod Friends.

This is the one policy area where Oakland can effectively demonstrate our true progressive spirit.

I agree with Eddie...Bun Mam Soc Trang has the best Vietnamese soups I've had in either Oakland, SF or NYC. Well, at least since V's on Webster closed down about 10 years' ago.

Different of course from omnipresent Pha...and thus possibly to Vietnamese homey for some americans. But oooohhhh so good.

We'll get Bun Mam Soc Trang a place to open again soon enough!

Wow Bijan, you're a real prognosticator! You "predicted" the business would fail "back in the 90's" and only had to wait 20+ years for your prediction to "come true." Except the business isn't failing at all. It's being forced out by the landlord and plans to reopen. Also, if you wait long enough pretty much any business will close. Yeah, great place. But also in the early seventies we got Rockridge Cafe (still going) and the Brick Hut, now gone. Not just Mama's. And wasn't there that little place up Fruitvale? with the small counter and huge omelets?
