Re: “Why Does the Berkeley City Council Care About a Dog Meat Festival in China?

If you haven't been to the festival or seen the videos, you just won't understand. This is not an issue of eating a certain type of animal, this is about publicly torturing animals and maximizing their suffering. This is unnecessarily cruel and just horrific

Re: “Former Employee Who is Suing Burma Superstar: 'It Was Complete Madness'

I too am absolutely appalled and disappointed by these allegations and have to take them very seriously as Asian Law Caucus, Legal Aid Society-Employment Law Center, and Centro Legal de la Raza would only file a class action suit if the charged have credibility. I too will be boycotting Burma Superstar unless they are exonerated. Eating there would turn my stomach as we have labor laws for a reason as immigrants and non-English speakers are often the ones oppressed in these restaurants. I know Burma is making a LOT of $ which makes this case even more unfortunate and sad.

Re: “Former Employee Who is Suing Burma Superstar: 'It Was Complete Madness'

REALLY Walter M?! Withholding paychecks illegally from multiple employees sounds like a witchhunt to you? There is nothing funny about this. Employers who abuse minimum wage employees should be held accountable and fined to discourage this practice. It is simply unacceptable to take advantage of workers who are the lowest paid and often don't speak English well. I will certainly boycott Burma Superstar - it was my favorite restaurant! The food is fabulous - but not at the expense of abusing employees. Important for patrons to know this.

Re: “Former Employee Who is Suing Burma Superstar: 'It Was Complete Madness'

Sounds like a one-sided witch hunt. Looks like their lawyers are having a field day with this one. ha ha ha

No way I would ever want to be a restaurant owner in the San Francisco bay area with all these lawsuits. One of my favorite restaurants in SF, Beetlenut, closed down recently. I wonder if it was because of one of these kinds of lawsuits. I miss their food. :(

Re: “Burma Superstar Kitchen Staff Sue Bay Area Chain Over Wage Violations

A 2-1 decision from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals bars businesses from sharing tips given to waiters, bartenders and other staff with back-of-house employees such as dishwashers and cooks. I think that's important to note when sharing potentially inflammatory information like this:

"Many of these issues concern the disparity in pay between front-of-house and back-of-house employees, as generally only FOH employees benefit from tips — an issue that disproportionately affects people of color given that they are more likely to work in the kitchen."

This place was basically my introduction to Oakland. Very sad to see it go.

Re: “Twenty Restaurants to Consider When Eating 'Ethnic' in the East Bay

Again alaMar has been forgotten. I guess a 2yrs old 2 time "Michelin Recommended Restaurant" whose owned by an African American Latin Chef just doesn't cut it huh?

Re: “Twenty Restaurants to Consider When Eating 'Ethnic' in the East Bay

Only EBX and Luke Tsai could frame eating out into a race/class/colonization polemic. Perhaps just focus on the thing you want to promote because it earned it, and forget about the BS that is most media. I knew about most of the spots in this post -and some are quite well praised in the press... Grocery Cafe is not a secret and has not been discounted by reporters over a more posh eatery serving the same fare.

Re: “Court Ruling Shuts Kitchen Staff Out of Tip Pools, Prompts Some East Bay Restaurants to Consider Going Tipless

Why not make the owners of the businesses pay the kitchen. I can tell you right now the owner of the place i work takes several vacations a year. He has a huge house and owns the property. His retirement is set and he is a lot better off financially than me. So why can't he raise the prices and pay his bills? Instead of taking my hard earned cash.
People like you sicken me. You obviously are not a server. Try living the life before you tell me how to give away my hard earned cash/.

Re: “West Oakland Gets an East Coast-Style Italian Deli

That the owners are either born in west oakland or long term past oakland residents eases the blow of this existing. As a Black 20+ year resident of Oakland, driving past this store makes me sad. it's gentrification at its best. The city has little to no youth development in that area and a school with a long history that Oakland Unified School District is doing its best to destroy and dismantle. I want to wish them the best and most of me does but in these times, its addition to the neighborhood makes me want to scream! Now that from out-of-state white googlers and the like are driving Black folks out of west oakland there's a deli. Just great. Yay!!!

Re: “Oakland’s Only Nigerian Restaurant Makes Way for a New Beer Garden

In was born and raised in Oakland, and live with my wife and kid in our home in the Laurel. The outrage in this page is ridiculous and misplaced. I've been waiting for a spot like this beer garden here for over 20 years. I can't wait for my family and I to become regulars there.

Re: “Oakland’s Only Nigerian Restaurant Makes Way for a New Beer Garden

I look forward to this beer garden coming to my neighborhood. Congratulations Paul for fulfilling your dream.
Also Sequoia Diner is the best breakfast and lunch ever!
I just wish they were open 7 days a week!

Re: “Study Finds that Bay Area Restaurants Have the Largest Race-Based Pay Gap in the Country

Isn't it also possible that more FOH employees at Kingston 11 are POC because their ethnicity matches that of the cuisine? Is that a reasonable consideration in hiring? (Genuine, not rhetorical, question.)

Come to think of it, do Asian servers (at Asian restaurants) count as POC? If so, I'm a bit surprised that Bay Area restaurants scored so low on equality. ;-)

Re: “Why Does the Berkeley City Council Care About a Dog Meat Festival in China?

Probably the same reason why Indians in India might protest against Americans for eating beef.
