Re: “Oakland Asks Judge to Throw Out Coal Lawsuit

Surely it is time for Phil to move forward and work on his project without wasting time and money on this stupid litigation. It is obvious that coal is on the way out as an energy source. China has realized that particulates in the air are making their cities toxic. Considering that he is a dedicated scuba diver who loves clear waters, Phil is paradoxically unwise on this issue. The almighty dollar is not a good reason to poison us nor our planet.

Re: “Hawker Fare Aims to Go Out With a Bang

Agree with the first three commenters...and also a white boomer "gentrifier." I chose Oakland because I love it. Mostly its diversity and food scene. I don't want another San Francisco, as cool as it is to have the city across the bay accessible.

Re: “Hawker Fare Aims to Go Out With a Bang

The Trumpization of America marches on with money and homogenization and privilege as the themes. Keep 'em out if they're different. Keep out their amazing talents that truly made America great. More white bread please. Make American White again. And I'm a white baby boomer who brags about Oaktown and our amazing diversity of people and food. Sad, Boring. Tears.

Re: “Hawker Fare Aims to Go Out With a Bang

I used to work a block away from HF, and I ate there something like 3x a week for a year+, because it was f'ing spectacular. Not only was the food great, but the staff was great as well.

In the waning days of the job I had in Uptown, things were rough. Emotionally draining. Utterly, soul-crushingly miserable. I was walking, dejected, back to the parking lot at the end of a long day, and A came jogging out of the place and said, "Hang on." He went back inside & made me an ice cream cone. I may have teared up a little.

There are a lot of things I loved about Hawker Fare. The style of the place. The people. The great food. Sometimes a bit out of my comfort zone. Always interesting. I was proud that place was Oakland.

And as long as I live, I'll never forget that ice cream cone.

Re: “Hawker Fare Aims to Go Out With a Bang

Passing of an OakAsian institution. I'm a white guy so don't know my Asian cuisine as well as natives who've lived it, but I'm putting this right up there with the disappearance of some other OakAsian moderately priced institutions...like the old V's on Webster and Bun Mam Soc Trang near 14th Ave.

Correct me if I'm wrong Luke, as your live and work this stuff.

There are certainly still a few hidden gems at reasonable prices. But these three were as good as anything in NYC. And unfortunately this is one white guy who doesn't have the money to follow V's back to Southeast Asia...

Re: “Town Business: Oakland City Council Fights Trump Immigration Ban; Police Monitor Contracts Come Back; 2017-19 City Budget

some of that money should be going to fix Oakland problems. Like putting more police on the street, fixing housing or feeding the homeless there.

Misleading click bait title on FB EBE like page btw.

Re: “Poll: White, Affluent Oaklanders Happiest. Black Residents Least Happy. And Everyone's Freaked Out By Housing Crisis.

The differentiation between information and opinion seems to be non-existent. Analysis seems to be something that EBX does not want or need for its writings.

Exactly what analysis was performed to determine that "Everyone's Freaked Out By Housing Crisis" (article title) given the fact that 29% identified housing costs/affordability as the number 1 priority and 10% identified it as the number 2 priority.

So, for 61% of the respondents, housing costs/affordability was, at best, the 3rd highest priority. Therefore "everyone is freaked out?"

Oh, and zero of the survey that was performed and analyzed identified root cause. But, the author, without any apparent reasoning, determined that "happiness" differences were rooted in "racial segregation, redlining, deindustrialization, job discrimination, the drug war, and most recently the foreclosure crisis."

Well done EBX. It is horrible enough that Trump has his own set of "alternative facts."

Go ahead and march. As a buyer of the Saturday edition, you have my permission (not that you'd have to ask..).

Re: “Oakland's Toxic Lead Contamination Isn't in the Water. It's in the Buildings and Dirt, and It's Bad.

I also wanted to add, what about the fact the Alameda Naval Air Station is a Superfund site (nothing super about that...). According to the EPA web site,

"All liquid industrial wastewaters generated at the site prior to 1974 were discharged untreated into Seaplane Lagoon and the Oakland Inner Harbor."

Re: “Poll: White, Affluent Oaklanders Happiest. Black Residents Least Happy. And Everyone's Freaked Out By Housing Crisis.

"White people with college educations and six-figure incomes who live in North Oakland and around Lake Merritt are "most happy" with the city's quality of life."

Stupendous insight!

"All Oaklanders are willing to pay higher taxes to support better services, almost across the board."

Maybe all such Oaklanders don't understand that a third of the fixed high housing costs they complain about go to pay property taxes. In addition Oakland/Alameda County is hardly modest regarding sales and other taxes and fees.

On the other hand there are significant areas in which Oakland's services amount to so little, and the need is sufficiently high, that people will give even more. Should I point out public safety?

It's great how the East Bay Express publishes articles like this that dive deep into the topic of the rich diversity in Oakland... by only talking about its Black and White residents.

Re: “To Undermine Sanctuary Cities, Trump Orders Cuts for Lead Safety, Homeless Shelters, Childcare, Many Other Programs

Trump is a divisive racist fascist that doesn't care if he tears apart that some many worked really hard to make happen. The pen being mightier that the sword has stopped millions of FEDERAL DOLLARS assistance to these sanctuary cities. This bigoted P.O.S P.O.T.U.S. is the largest delusional manchild that I have ever seen in my lifetime. He scares the hell out of me.

We should stop sending our tax dollars to the federal government. We give more than we get. The states that elected this pariah get more than they give.

Re: “Poll: White, Affluent Oaklanders Happiest. Black Residents Least Happy. And Everyone's Freaked Out By Housing Crisis.

What if you'all reduced OPD ranks by 53 people and formed a professional football team? Then you could spend that extra $10M on homelessness, schools and affordable housing. Would that work?

Kaplan has no business beating her drum in North Dakota nor should she get involved in telling PERS how to invest. It seems that PERS has done very well without her input.

Re: “Poll: White, Affluent Oaklanders Happiest. Black Residents Least Happy. And Everyone's Freaked Out By Housing Crisis.

I'm curious: In a city as diverse as Oakland (socio-economically & geographically), how does a survey account for citizens feelings with only 1,202 interviews?

I mean, the differences in micro-climates alone are UGE!

PS. Looking at the map, how far into the Bay does District 7 extend...All the way to the peninsula?
