Re: “On the Closing of Hawker Fare

I suggest a conference specifically geared to local restaurants in the medium price & affordable price ranges to help them buy rather than rent. That way they can transcend rent increases & property ownership changes. They would be the owners.

There are several organizations specializing in these type of programs. We've got to help them target & meet restaurants.

I am a big fan of your writing and your palate. I lost count of the number of restaurants that you have alerted me to. Thanks.

I was ecstatic that you visited our newest restaurant in the village, and even more ecstatic that you like the place. We do too.

I am a business owner in Montclair and a Hills resident, and I find your typification of my business district and my neighborhood as 'lilywhite' to be demeaning, inaccurate and quite frankly, racist, short sighted and insensitive.

In fact, I showed your review to several people, who all questioned your use of the word "lily white."

In the Montclair business district, I see owners and employees of every color and background; in my residential neighborhood, I see the same mix.

Yes, the population of African Americans, Asian Americans and Latino Americans is less than in West and East Oakland, the San Antonio district and Chinatown/KoBe, but that is due to the high cost of housing more than any other factor, and is a sad statement on our institutionally racist society, not of any individual neighborhood.

Still on my block in the Hills - 150 families - there are families of every race.

A retraction would be nice.

People who live in Montclair today didn't choose the restaurants that are in the village. Rents are incredibly high, there's little available retail space due to too many realtors on the ground floor, and that is what determines who can stay, who can't come in. People who live in Montclair eat in restaurants all over Oakland. Don't equate white with non-adventurous eating.

BTW, Pican's "Creole Spiced Bacon" is dead easy to make; I do it all the time at home. Didn't even need a recipe to figure that one out, LOL. We prefer it with a modest amt of brown sugar, we like our spicy bacon to taste balanced between sweet/salt and less like candied jerky.

I've enjoyed the Millionaire's Bacon at Brewery Gulch Inn many times, and it's so incredibly delicious! What I find interesting is that not only is the name of Mr. Choi's bacon the same as that of the dish that's been on BGI's menu since 2001, but the ingredients for Mr. Choi's bacon look identical to the ingredients in the Millionaire's Bacon at Brewery Gulch Inn. Things that make you go "Hmmm...."

We are both amused and honored that Mr. Choi, a guest of ours in 2010, has chosen to include on his menu Millionaire's Bacon, a signature item created by our first chef and the featured item on our menu since the Inn's opening in 2001.

It is ironic that, as a new citizen, the character goes to racist "Geno's Steaks" in South Philly, where until the Pope's recent visit had signs on their restaurant stating "This Is AMERICA, When ordering, SPEAK ENGLISH" and "Press 1 for English, Press 2 for Deportation". The character should have gone to "Pat's Steaks" across the street, the actual creator's of the cheesesteak sandwich, which they serve to everyone.

As a native San Franciscan and Berkeley alum, I wish we had known about you and had time to visit your restaurant when we spent a week visiting my brother in his nursing home in San Rafael. Unfortunately, he died two months later. And meantime, we returned to Beersheba, Israel, where we live.

I think it is worth a trip by your reviewers and customers who haven't been in a while.. to check out the great menu by Geoff Deetz, an OG of the Oakland food scene.

Correction Marmee Manak a seasoned sommelier who has worked alongside This incredible chef for many years. She has travelled internationally to organic: biodynamic wine festivals and visit domestically many of our vineyards to experience the land. I'm enticed to dine there for both the food and exquisite wines.
