Re: “Pardoned 'Crack King' Darryl Reed Says He Wants To Unite Oakland Neighborhoods

I can complain, because, while I was selling records on consignment and out of the trunk of my car, I'm told that Short was getting $200k from dubious sources to buy Black radio and Hammer got $170k from the A's and also dubious sources. I am not "hatin'". I am glad my brothas were successful. But, Quan is a $144 million-dollar criminal, who will never even be investigated...I don't know...If $3 million-dollar criminal, Reed, who did 26 years of prison time, was White or Asian, everyone would be saying how he had paid his debt to society and that everyone deserves a second chance...Quan was elected Mayor!! And, what crime did Too Short commit? Why besmear his name? Guilt by association? Yes...Everyone says that about Blacks in America...Wanna convict him for his lyrics? You got my vote! But, otherwise, he is NOT a criminal...The crime is at Youth Uprising, which has accepted millions in federal funds for a phony after school program and can rarely get more than 3 people in through the doors in a week...Is Pastor Stanley Burell (MC Hammer) a criminal, too? And, what about Martha Stewart? How many lives did she ruin, while enriching herself? How many people are rushing up to her to get autographs and to do shows with her? You criticizing them, too? What about Delorean? $24 million in cocaine in ONE DEAL and never saw ONE day of jail-time. They never even searched his house. He still briefly sold his nasty-looking cars. All of these crimes took place within a few years of each other. Reed is the only one who did serious time...What product is Reed selling, now? Peace and Acceptance? I guess we had better lock him up again for that? Further, tons of cocaine are still being allowed into this country by the government. You gonna stop hanging out with them? Bet you run and vote every time they run for something...Due to counter-intelligence and social service from Brothas like me, after the Million Man March, we were able to get the majority of our people off of crack cocaine...while Delorean was still throwing million-dollar cocktail parties... So, get off of us, Charlie Pine. You've got some work to do in Asian and White America, and the crimes appear to be a lot worse.

As a formerly incarcerated Woman from the Bay Area I am obligated to give back. I would like to organize a Bay Area Regional Talent Showcase and have competition in Academics, Sports, the Arts. From fashion to culinary. Pull this off and we might stand a chance in rebuilding our Youth!

I remember asking him once do you hate hate? Yes he replied. Kind of a double negative isn't it? I hate your double negatives!

He was truly a Berkeley character!

Re: “Pardoned 'Crack King' Darryl Reed Says He Wants To Unite Oakland Neighborhoods

As a "Returning Citizen" aka Formerly Incarcerated man from Oakland, & personal friend of Darryl Reed, Too Short, & sever others in attendance at what I considereda monumental event, because I know that Darryl feels that his actions of the 80's led to what's happening with the younger generations, & the violence not just in the Bay Area, but throughout the country is a result of all of our actions when we were their age. Darryl & several other Returning Citizens choose to find what are the best practices & models that will reduce this youth violence. I have chosen to find additional resources for those that are Formerly Incarcerated & who still are that want to continue on with their education. Or from incarceration to institutions of higher education. In essence, those of us who have made mistakes, & have paid our debts to society want to contribute back to society in a positive way.

Respectively Yours,
LaMont "Monty" Jackson

Re: “Will Oakland Become First U.S. City To Ditch Wall Street And Establish A Public Bank?

The real issue here is that municipalities, regions, states and even the nation establish Public Banks to serve the needs of the 99%. The usual pro-business anti-socialist, pro-capitalists protect their pyramid scheme turf because they stand to loose their privilege to wealth and may have to actually compete with talent equally enabled. The US banking system is a private system enforced by a government controlled by Bankster1%. This is why we now face crisis upon crisis as the 1% just cannot get the idea that a truly free market enabled to EVERYONE equally policed by the people's government can establish a fair system with nominal loan and savings interest for EVERYONE. Money is the property of the people, created through OUR authority allowing banks to manufacture it 10x+ held assets. It is now time we assume this authority for the 99%, under the scrutiny of the people for people. The profits are rolled back into more loans and savings interest securing the Public Commons with a future.

Oh and now we must hear the whining R1%CH and their sycophant wanna bees protecting profit turf with the usual ungrounded fear-mongering and cries of "socialism". Socialism? Like fully self-funded SS and Medicare (no matter what they say this is a fact)? Yes... and let's get on it!

Re: “Pardoned 'Crack King' Darryl Reed Says He Wants To Unite Oakland Neighborhoods

"Too Short" welcomes this man who ruined countless lives. TS, you recall, was appointed a career counselor by the Youth UpRising agency (where Jean Quan kicked off her mayoral campaign).

Re: “Day After Deadly West Oakland Apartment Fire, City Modified Real Estate Deal to Financially Benefit Negligent Landlord

...And while BondGraham is busy chasing the property owner and attempting to incite class conflict, the Chronicle has unearthed documents indicating the fire department urged the closure of the the building... And were ignored.

http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Oakl…

While Oakland (politicians AND general community) have pursued "civic pride" in the form of million dollar subsidies to sports teams and other boondoggles, basic services have gone unfunded, roads unmaintained and schools are under funded.

Blaming a mayor elected in the last year while long term city council members go nearly unmentioned and unwatched is disingenuous at best, but totally expected from this tabloid style reporter.

The fact that the community has re-elected these council members repeatedly is incredible to me and even more incredible EBX never mentions it.

Re: “Day After Deadly West Oakland Apartment Fire, City Modified Real Estate Deal to Financially Benefit Negligent Landlord

Over and over again, it is the same old story. The City of Oakland illustrates it's incompetence and a determination to go to great lengths to deal with shady characters. Jabari Herbert is a decent guy, but has been around about 20 years, always promising development deals with the City of Oakland, but never putting anything in the ground. His only role appears to be as a middle man using his relationships and the process to maintain a permanent income source. Again, Council member McElheney appears to have no ethical boundaries. Her apparent relationship with Kim, a man previously convicted of insider trading and other questionable financial deals is shameful. This time folks, while she focused on interceding in a questionable real estate deal with Kim and her friends, people who lived in his substandard and knowingly dangerous property died. When will this madness stop?

Re: “Day After Deadly West Oakland Apartment Fire, City Modified Real Estate Deal to Financially Benefit Negligent Landlord

Corrupt financial dealings are bad enough.

A government which fails to provide for the public safety because it is too busy doing fishy deals really needs to be taken down.

Didn't we create and fund a Public Ethics Commission a couple of years ago? What is that august body up to?

Re: “Day After Deadly West Oakland Apartment Fire, City Modified Real Estate Deal to Financially Benefit Negligent Landlord

Yes, thank you, Darwin. Once again, documents reveal totally corrupt City of Oakland officials 1) enriching private citizens at public expense, and 2) aiding and abetting the operation of a large apartment building without legally required fire safety equipment, leading to 4 deaths.

Re: “General Electric Plans To Demolish East Oakland Factory. But Residents Want More Than A Polluted, Vacant Lot

I don't care if GE wants to tear down the building. Make them clean up their mess. Keep them in court until they do. People should be able to be safe anywhere on the property, after GE is gone. A concrete cap is GE's way of disparaging Oakland and leaving pollution to float through the aquafer. GE's final "screw you!"

Re: “AB InBev’s Corporate Craft Brand Isn’t Coming to Oakland To Make Beer Buddies. It’s Coming To Dominate.

Most beer drinkers in the Bay Area will support a locally owned shop rather than some nasty corporate conglomerate. Of course the ex-frat and sorority newcomer/carperbaggers will flock to it like they flock to Chipotle over real Mexican food. They can have it. This just means less obnoxious behavior in beer pubs for the rest of us. Feel sorry for the neighbors. As we know the City of Oakland doesn't give a sh*t about people who live here, only about $$$ for their political campaigns and their real estate cronies like slumlord scumbag Keith Kim.

Thank you Darwin!
I knew it---the city is culpable. But do the victims of this fire have any recourse? When do the lawsuits begin? The Oakland city government is a nest of vipers.

Re: “AB InBev’s Corporate Craft Brand Isn’t Coming to Oakland To Make Beer Buddies. It’s Coming To Dominate.

Good work Nick. ABInBev's history of despicable business practices is remarkable. There Southern CA distributors were fined just last month for pay-to-play draft beer placements.

Re: “General Electric Plans To Demolish East Oakland Factory. But Residents Want More Than A Polluted, Vacant Lot

There is no question that this historically significant building should not be demolished. A concrete cap as a solution to site contamination is a 50 year old, cheap fix that should not be an option in this case. If any company in America has the resources to save the building and clean up the site, it is General Electric. In addition, the potential importance of this building's retention to a long neglected neighborhood is also significant. Given new investment by AC Transit of the BRT project along International Blvd, adaptive reuse of this iconic building is a rare opportunity. Beyond that, I am confused by the City process and question why this is before the Planning Commission without any replacement project to consider. In order to demolish the building, I believe that local codes require that the replacement use of the site is a factor to be considered prior to issuance of a demolition permit. Beyond that, demolition of this important building would be a significant impact under CEQA. In order to approve the EIR, the city will need to adopt an SOC (Statement of Overriding Consideration). In order to adopt the SOC, the city will need to find that the public benefit of approving the "project" (demolition of the building) outweighs the benefit of retaining the resource. I don't know how you can make that finding without evaluating some reuse of the site. Without a replacement project to consider, the city and GE would be open to legal challenge of the environmental document.
