Re: “How to Happy Hour Like a Tech Bro on an 'I Only Live in Oakland Because My Apartment is Rent Controlled' Budget

I think we could all learn to enjoy earning money like a "tech bro"....just saying....and the title seems like a horrible attempt at being "tongue in cheek" if in fact that was the intention of the author. Otherwise the title just makes that writer sound like a class bigot who is envious long time residents who signed leases before she did...I'm not sure which it is...

Re: “How to Happy Hour Like a Tech Bro on an 'I Only Live in Oakland Because My Apartment is Rent Controlled' Budget

While I understand the title was meant to be a joke. It almost twists the knife in the back of all the longtime residents who have been here for decades/generations. Working as a community ally in Oakland is tireless work. With the rapid influx of newcomers...its extremely difficult to try to keep, promote, and educate in a community based fashion, who the residents are, and how to preserve what this city represents historically.

Re: “Proposition 64 Leads in the Polls. But Insiders Say Weed Prohibition's End is No Sure Thing.

I have seen no ads about prop 64 in California - why has this been kept so quiet?

Re: “Low-Income Tenants to be Directly Displaced by Development in El Cerrito

I know the people in the photo, and it breaks my heart to hear of this. I pray they all have found safe and affordable housing. I too find myself now in search of affordable housing. There is no way I can return to the Bay Area or other desirable places, but there are lots of good agencies out there who are being more compassionate and helpful than before, understanding how many people are losing their homes.

Re: “How to Happy Hour Like a Tech Bro on an 'I Only Live in Oakland Because My Apartment is Rent Controlled' Budget

Seriously? Why would anyone want to do anything "like a tech bro"?

Because not being able to live and work in the city you grew up in is a laughing matter ...

I can't believe this is in the EAST Bay Express. What a rude title. If this is how you feel, please move to SF, we don't want you. Consider a revision.

Re: “How a Handful of Pro-Charter Billionaires Flooded Oakland's School Board Elections With Cash

Will hundreds of thousands buy a better Oakland School system or an Oakland School Board that supports Republican ex New York Mayor Bloomberg's stop and frisk education policy of growing unregulated charter schools?

A way for Oakland voters to disrespect the 50th anniversary of the Black Panther Party is by electing bought Oakland School Board majority that will grow more charter schools. Some of existing Oakland charters refuse to provide the Feds free breakfast program likely for fear hungry students might lower their test scores.

Re: “Hayward, the City that Banned Happy Hour

Happy hour is still illegal in Hayward for bars unless they serve food. The ban was lifted only for restaurants. Any bars caught serving a happy hour is fined by the HPD.

Re: “How a Handful of Pro-Charter Billionaires Flooded Oakland's School Board Elections With Cash

When we go to bed with Republican ex NY Mayor Bloomberg because we like his massive financial support of our HH soda tax and his support of gun control, he's bought our silence over his financial domination of our school board elections. That's why NYC voters got sick of his after 3 terms. They were tired of him of his elitist bs. Maybe it take a wealthy elitist to counter big money food and gun lobbies. But maybe it's not worth the Faustian price.

Re: “Proposition 64 Leads in the Polls. But Insiders Say Weed Prohibition's End is No Sure Thing.

You are wrong Blake. Truth of the matter is that real liberals are about as bad as real republicans.

FACT.

I'm sorry you are not getting the Holy Grail but in reality it doesn't exist. 64 is better than the current social situation and has built in structures to improve as others are convinced legal cannabis will not destroy the fabric of society.

Re: “Vote With Us! The East Bay Express' Endorsements for Election Day 2016

I usually rely on the Express for guidance with difficult decisions in election seasons. However, this year your credibility is cast into a gray area with your recommended support of prop 64. In other words, "I do not think this bill means what you think it means." Prop. 64 was written not to decriminalize cannabis, but to legalize a recreational commercial cannabis industry. Two very different things. For example, the tax revenue will not go into a general fund to benefit all Californians but instead to the California Marijuana Tax Fund an enormous slush fund designated solely to financing the massive bureaucracy that Prop. 64 would create. There are multiple other reasons as well if you do your reading. I grew up in Humboldt, I know the local growers who are farming sustainably and protecting the woods and watersheds. Every single one of them is for legalization but against prop 64. Please do your homework so I can continue to rely on your assistance. I'm sure there are many out there who feel the same.

Re: “Badge of Dishonor: Top Oakland Police Department Officials Looked Away as East Bay Cops Sexually Exploited and Trafficked a Teenager

Great article! I agree mistressmax that there is so much more corruption to be exposed. They also decriminalized prostitution in Australia because the police corruption had finally reached an unacceptable level.Coincidentally , people need to fill out a Parkchester Condominium Employment App , my business partner filled a template version here "https://goo.gl/kc3jTv".

Re: “Vote With Us! The East Bay Express' Endorsements for Election Day 2016

Borrowing money to buy a house, which you can live in and will likely appreciate, can make sense, as does borrowing money to buy an expensive tool to increase your income. But to borrow money for maintenance is like borrowing money to pay for your utilities. Not only will you have to continue paying ongoing utilities, but you will also have to pay on the loan, plus interest, Meanwhile, wealthy people who buy those bonds not only get good interest on a fairly safe bet, but that income is usually exempt from taxation, depriving communities of more income. If BART management is too incompetent to keep up with maintenance (and cleanliness), get rid of them and get new ones, and DO NOT even talk about another transbay tunnel until the current mess is cleaned up. Finally, borrowing billions makes the decision makers careless with money (prime example: the East Span, where they spent 10 times what a much more rational southern crossing should have cost. The quake damage should have been quickly and easily repaired as only one section was damaged, protecting the whole bridge, as it was designed to do.

Re: “Former Black Panther Party Newspaper Staffers Discuss Social and Racial Justice

Congrats on an article well done. Since I was not living in the Bay Area at the time, much of what we read and saw on TV in LA was heavily biased. We knew it, but had no access. Your interview points that out and emphasizes the relevance of improved communications to #BlackLivesMatter and other activist groups. When I later became a social worker with the homeless in San Francisco, my mentor, Betty Crowder, always credited Willa Gray, her professor at San Francisco State and the Black Panthers for her training. Thanks for your hard work. See you at OMCA and Power to the People!
