Re: “Will Oakland Become First U.S. City To Ditch Wall Street And Establish A Public Bank?

After reading Ellen Brown's book, I thought that a Bank of Oakland COULD be a good thing for Oakland's finances and thus our social and environmental foundation.

However, we need to keep in mind the history of Oakland's financial dealings and many high expectations profoundly dashed because of management incompetence and a failure of elected officials to think critically.

Thus these statements from the essay are especially relevant:

"Oakland would need to make a strong case that its got a solid business plan, and has the capital to finance it, or a good management team to execute it."

"If the bank takes on unprofitable loans intended to help the community, the riskier loans might be more prone to default and could run the bank into the ground."

"The management team chosen to run the bank will be required to have strong backgrounds in finance but also be dedicated to the mission of public service. With little precedent, these dual qualifications might be hard to find."

Finally, I have some doubts about the projected income from the cannabis industry. Right now with cannabis somewhat decriminalized and the medical pot biz maintaining high prices, selling pot may be a good business. When recreational cultivation use becomes legally less restrictive next year I wonder whether potheads will continue to pay $200 or more an ounce for a plant that is as easy to grow in a garden or a flowerpot as basil, chives or parsley.

Re: “Skate Or DIY: Why Is It So Damn Hard To Build A Skate Park In Oakland?

A few years back, a group of skateboarders started using a long concrete bench as a ledge in an Emeryville park around the corner from my job. At first I was a annoyed to see them scuffing things up in our brand new park, but then I saw that they were out there every day practicing their skills and filming each other in action.

I realized they were doing exactly what we say we want young people to do: get out in the fresh air and exercise, work together cooperatively, learn discipline, patience, and persistence, be independent. These are kids we should support and encourage with more spaces they can call their own.

Re: “Oakland Officials Question Police Partnerships with Federal Immigration Agents and FBI

Oakland needs to be clear and oppose Trump's policies on this.

Re: “Bay Area Activists Protest Peter Thiel's Partnership With Immigration and Customs Enforcement

As a wise sage from the 20th century suggested, "the media is the message". And the message here is that the media you are using is creating data that is being used for someone else's profit and, in some cases, against you and your interests. Take action and disconnect from Fakebook, Pay Pal, Amazon, iTunes, etc.

Re: “Oakland Officials Question Police Partnerships with Federal Immigration Agents and FBI

Police are not there to interpret which laws to enforce. They're there to enforce all laws. These "People" are also draining resources from the people who are here legally.

Are we saying that it's okay to lie, cheat, and steal? Really?? That's what you tell your children, family and friends.

Re: “Oakland Officials Question Police Partnerships with Federal Immigration Agents and FBI

Enforce the law. Can't pick and choose.....So the murderer of Kate Steinle would not be reported to ICE because Oakland is a sanctuary city....??? Don't make me laugh....solve the crime, protect Americans....OPD takes an oath to defend the Constitution. The lady killed by the 5 time deported, multiple felon, illegal alien driving drunk in Los Angeles would not be apprehended here ,because DUI is a misdemeanor...not really a crime...WTF is wrong with us

Re: “Skate Or DIY: Why Is It So Damn Hard To Build A Skate Park In Oakland?

I founded the privately paid for Montclair Mini with help from K Dub, the vice mayor and other departments, in Montclair Park. Sadly, we had many in the community who did not want local skaters to have their own space to skate.
Despite this, we not only have a beautiful wooden halfpipe and we are planning a second phase. Excited to see more parks for the Oakland skate community!

Re: “Skate Or DIY: Why Is It So Damn Hard To Build A Skate Park In Oakland?

There is a legal skate park in this neighborhood already - the opposite end of the neighborhood - but still - Town Park at 18th near Poplar is legal and not that far - particularly if you are on wheels already...

Just points to the need for effective oversight of the police. We have a new chief. Will she do it? Let's see.

Re: “Letters of the Week: 'Baconslut,' Single-Payer Health Care, and More

Jerry. How old are you? Have you ever served in the military? Worked as a paramedic? Assisted in a soup kitchen? I hope you provide yourself with the opportunity to engage with the human race as a complete human, to experience him/she/their/it suffering first hand. Your nonchalant critiques are cruel.

Re: “Should The Next Oakland Unified Schools Superintendent Be Homegrown?

The charter comments are not based in reality. Can you site your data that supports the anti-charter comments? Close to 1/3 of Oakland public school students attend charters. Growing for sure.

Re: “Inside Immigration Court: Are Deportation Hearings In The Bay Area Unconstitutional?

The above citizen is misinformed. Data shows that most undocumented immigrants enter the U.S. for many of the reasons that our ancestors risked immigrating to the U.S.--for opportunities for themselves and their children. The proportion of those being arrested do NOT HAVE CRIMINAL RECORDS.

Re: “Oakland Officials Question Police Partnerships with Federal Immigration Agents and FBI

The City absolutely needs to make sure that Oakland Police play NO role in assisting ICE or any other agency that detains our people for deportation. We are a SANCTUARY City, and we have to be sure that means something!

Re: “Oakland Officials Question Police Partnerships with Federal Immigration Agents and FBI

Someone needs to talk to all those folks with fancy titles who hang out in city hall about OPD, the Oakland Police Department, which is, in fact, an actual, official, Department of the city government of the city of Oakland.

Thus whatever OPD does is fundamentally the responsibility of those elected folks with fancy titles.

If the fancy-titled electeds don't know what OPD does, then what the hell are those folks doing?

Some things they are not doing is providing for the public safety, insuring ethical behavior in OPD and making sure OPD reforms mandated nearly 15 years ago are fully implemented. Not to mention being responsible for whatever OPD does with regard to protecting Oaklanders from ICE and whatever Trump comes up with.

Maybe we need a new city commission like the new Police Commission. This new commission would oversee what the fancy-titled electeds in city hall do with all their time.

Re: “Letters of the Week: 'Baconslut,' Single-Payer Health Care, and More

Jerry, and other people that fall for these right wind talking points, are ultimately spending a lot more money than they would be if we had a better welfare state. They'd rather be spiteful about those in dire straits than realize how much of their tax dollars go to making the rich richer, and how little those rich people pay.

Re: “Why Black Students Are Avoiding UC Berkeley

I have 2 sons, graduates of UC Berkeley & Princeton, respectively. An Ivy League education opens doors that a Berkeley education does not. Plus, several of the Ives (& Stanford) offer 'no loan' generous financial packages to all their students, regardless of race.
A black student admitted to one of those schools would have to either be crazy or scared to leave home to not take advantage of such a wonderful opportunity.
As a Cal graduate myself, I can say that Cal has always been very hard on their students. It's like a 'survival test'.
On the other hand, a school like Princeton goes out of their way to provide an encouraging environment for their students.
Cal needs to admit the next level of black students and give them good support. They aren't going to win the top black students in a bidding war with Harvard. Face it.
