Re: “Oakland Police Union Spending Thousands on Effort to Unseat Councilmembers Kalb and Gallo

I sure hope the voters in Dan Kalb's district vote for him. He's a good man who thinks deeply about issues that affect our city and works consistently to make the police officers more supported and the OPD more transparent and accountable to Oakland's citizens.

Re: “Alameda Superior Court Judge: Landlord Acting "Unbelievably Callous" in Chinatown SRO Harassment Case

Fortunately for the plaintiffs, this is a case where the politically popular thing for the judge to do also happens to be the legally correct thing.

Re: “Town Business: Uber for Parking; Police Sex Crime Scandal Undermined Trust in OPD

Well nothing could go wrong with dense surveillance of every car in downtown Oakland, now, right? I will certainly be interested to see if it bothers anybody else. Note that many people LIVE within the area. (I wonder how my neighbors with the infant twins and the thirty-or-so stairs up to their door will react to the lineup of cars parking in front of their house?)

Re: “A Look at Who is Financing Oakland City Council Candidates

Libby is trying to build a political machine; she came up with Ignacio De LaFuente, a leading Peratista, in the Perata political machine. Libby excels at campaigning and sucks at leading, so she's trying to stack the deck with Council Members who owe their offices to her, developer friends, the Chamber of Commerce, the Charter Lobby, and her signature pseudo-science, dog-whistling, racist public safety agenda. Mayor Schaaf staunchly maintains that she isn't a racist because she supports schools and scholarships and has albums of selfies with Oakland's Black youth. Like Ignacio, her mentor, she campaigns on fear of Black criminals & anarchists, home security, a police state and restorative justice; as her pals the police, lobbyists, private security, her neighbors and the Chamber of Commerce profile, harass ,arrest, imprison, shoot, and kill Black and Brown people.

Re: “Anti-Legalizers Sue California Over Prop 64 Ballot Language

Proposition 64 is a death knell to the farmers of the Emerald Triangle, their families and the communities who depend on this, the last industry standing after the collapse of the logging, lumber and fishing industries. In Prop 64’s despotic future, farmers & growers are forced to pay taxes before they sell their harvest. A medium sized farm that produced 400 pounds of buds & leaves would have a tax bill of over $60,000 and for the first time ever taxes have to be paid before any sales are allowed.”

Proposition 64’s insidious plan institutes controls that treat cannabis as a dangerous substance, and not as a medicine. It does all it can to force users to return to the dark and hide their use. The chant, “Out of the Dark and into the Light” reflecting overcoming the long time stigma of cannabis use will be replaced by laws that make it a crime to smoke outside where someone could see you or smell cannabis smoke. Smoking outside, even where cigarettes are allowed, is forbidden and the homeless, including homeless veterans who smoke cannabis to treat their PTSD will be committing a crime, subjected to fines and even jail if they are unable to pay. There will be no more smoking cannabis at an outdoor concert or other events. It will be like the "Bad Old Days” when law enforcement waded into crowds to arrest people for smoking a joint. This time they will be wading in handing out tickets resulting in fines.

This is not legalization it is domination, extreme controls, massive regulation and taxation without representation. The Official Libertarian Party Executive Committee has it right when they advise a NO Vote on 64 because it, “does more harm than good, damaging medical availability, and creating additional criminal offenses and regulations.”

Re: “At Belly in Uptown Oakland, the California-Korean Burrito Comes North

Was eating at belly when the Black Panthers came by, they were respectful and asked to use the rest room and spoke to the owner of Belly, Alice Woo, about gentrification, she said no to the bathroom and told them to leave, as soon as they were gone she stormed to the kitchen and started screaming “F%*K THE BLACK PANTHERS” and “I CAN TAKE THEM”, yelling about how “this isn't what gentrification is”. I left, I was and still am so disgusted that a place like belly exists, especially in Oakland. This happened almost a year ago, I posted on yelp and the owner (Alice Woo) replied, comparing the Black Panthers to panhandlers and saying that her customers felt threatened - I was her customer, I did not feel threatened by the people who came in, I felt threatened by the owner. Then she deleted her posts. Search by rating on yelp and you will see how this restaurant treats people of color and their view of the surrounding community.

Interesting that you didn't find a line at Jim's on a weekend? We went last year and there was a good-sized line even at 11a. The line moves fast, tho; those waitresses are pros!

Re: “Unmasking The Art of Living

I am not here to defend or attack the foundation or the author of the mentioned blog. I will attack the statement that 'the foundation has only helped people and harmed no one'.

This foundation is responsible for destroying as many families as it has possibly touched.

In the olden days, women feared if their men decided to follow Buddhism full-time, thereby abandoning their families and social obligations in their entirety.

The Buddha never asked anyone to renounce their day to day lives – he simply pointed a way that made each living moment seem richer and free of ‘dukha’ (pain). Yet, while some people got this message, and used Buddhist practices (mindful practices) to enrich their day to day lives, MOST people actually used Buddha’s teachings to ESCAPE from their day to day life!

The same can be said for Art of Living followers! They are looking for an ESCAPE from their everyday lives. I know several well-employed people who quit their jobs in the prime of their careers to ‘follow their heart’ full-time. I know several people who routinely leave their kids at home (near abandoned) so they can attend a 3 day silence course!

They claim that their guru ‘calls out’ to their inner being –and it is not a call that they can easily reject. Yet, they feel no remorse in rejecting the call of their family or their immediate work-family, in the pursuit of this ‘fake’ inner call. It is FAKE, because no real guru will ask you to abandon everything to follow him or her. It is only the devotee that has this interpretation of the guru’s teachings.

I am YET to meet an AOL follower who is able to successfully balance their family and work life with their AOL responsibilities - which is ironical, because that is EXACTLY what the art of living is supposed to teach you ! And I hope your response to this will not be 'Well, this is not true because I know so many people who DO balance everything'....You may have met such people, but I repeat, I am YET to meet ONE such person -after having interacted with a few hundred AOL followers.

Re: “New California Law Will Open Up Job Opportunities To People With Criminal Records

Okay so your saying that I don't deserve a second chance ? I'm 22 years old ..charged with petty theft when I was 19. I stole some makeup worth 40$ at a department store. I have petty theft on my record. I never stole again after that . I'm in college for my LVN. Passing all my test with an 85% have dedicated my life to becoming a nurse and at clinicals my patients love me and I love them too and truly care about them go beyond to help them and make their day easier your gonna say that because I stole makeup I don't deserve to be a nurse and take care of people. That's stupid. Anyone can change. I'm living proof.

Re: “Boycotters Accuse 924 Gilman St. Project of Ethical Backslide

Hey, I'm a very old Gilman person. I go back almost, but not quite as far as Kamala. I completely disagree with the approach that takes hold at Gilman from time to time of trying to correct the worlds problems by policing the bands on the stage.
I disagree with a lot of the more offensive things that Mike Avilez and Sammytown say. But they are songs, not actual criminal acts. Mike is someone I consider a friend. I've put on shows with him. And when his bands played certain fucked up songs, I called him out for it. I never pulled a stunt like cutting the the power to the PA or turning up the house lights. I told him to his face that I found a song offensive.

Mike is also someone who has put a ton of work into putting on shows all over the Bay Area. Many in bars like the Stork Club but also in underground venues like Burnt Ramen.
His bans invariably suck, but the boy has heart.

Punk is offensive. It is crude. It has ugly warty nasty parts. It always has. If you clean up all the bands so that they can't say or do anything offensive, you have a nice polite, staid situation, which is not what those originators of punk were ever about.
Could Patti Smith play "Rock and Roll Nigger" at Gilman?
Could The Dead Kennedys play "Kill the poor", "I kill children" or pretty much half of their songs on their first two records?

That said, gay, black, trans, women, latino, and asian people should feel welcome at Gilman. Punk is too often a bunch of white boys beating their brains out and acting like macho dorks.
In my interpretation of the Gilman rules we did not tolerate fascist, racist or homophobic bullying. But you can say anything you want.
Which as Jesse relates, often amounted to not allowing people with rebel flag patches in the door.

After all Gilman is mostly young teen age people, who are figuring out who they are. You might see a kid with a mohawk one week, skinhead the next week, and skater a month later. I don't think it''s right to be ordaining rigid rules and policies in very important meetings at what is basically the longest running cool kid clubhouse east of the Mississippi.

And seriously, it is just a dumb fucking clubhouse. Oh no, you might get 86-ed! I did!
