Re: “How Nature Heals: Why East Bay Doctors Are Prescribing The Outdoors To People Of Color

50yrs ago? What does that have to do with today? It costs $2 for a bus ticket. And parks in slums will not bring in business, so how do you expect a city to survive? Welfare checks?

Institutional racism? Awww... Pretty bird. Yes, can you say pretty bird? Pretty bird, yeah pretty bird...Hobart want a cracker?

Re: “How Nature Heals: Why East Bay Doctors Are Prescribing The Outdoors To People Of Color

As I recall the Bay Area chapter of an environmental organization instituted a program to get minority children to local natural areas. This was 50 years ago in San Francisco where it was established that many impoverished kids in S.F. had never seen the Pacific Ocean.

The redlining and institutional racism continues in "diverse" and oh-so-sensitive Oakland. Instead of devoting bayside parcels to parks and other open spaces for the children who live in poor neighborhoods nearby, Oakland is fostering fancy high-rise developments for the affluent.

The outlook of the privileged class doesn't change so the living conditions of the poorest never get better.

The Nazi George Rockwell has plenty of allies in Oakland's city hall, whether they are conscious of it or not.

Yes, lack of green spaces and not laziness and sodium rich diets is the contributing factor to health problems for non-whites.

I know of a couple large land masses where there is plenty of green spaces. I hear the cost of living is quite cheap too!

Re: “Golden Road Brewing's Meg Gill Visits Oakland To Defend Controversial Plan To Open Beer Garden

The article mentions hogs apothecary as good for the neighborhood but neglected the fact that the owner of hogs steals from his employees by forbidding them from taking legally mandated breaks. This is actually extremely bad for the neighborhood and the workers.

Re: “Oakland Officials Are Divided Over a Proposal to Create a New Department of Violence Prevention

Who's relatives/friends of Reid/McElhaney will be appointed to this board? Nothing like having government creating more government for non-performing tasks.

Re: “Oakland Officials Are Divided Over a Proposal to Create a New Department of Violence Prevention

What troubles me most is the way our elected officials speak to each other. I am weary of the antics and disgusted by the trash talking of some on our city council, Reid, Brooks.... while complaining about the the ways our city doesn't work. Perhaps more civility and etiquette training would be a better investment of city funds.

Re: “Golden Road Brewing's Meg Gill Visits Oakland To Defend Controversial Plan To Open Beer Garden

They are still set on using, disgusting, dirty, dingy, SHIPPING CONTAINERS for this project. No way, let them spend some money on a nice looking building! They have it, lots of it! Get an architect, sister! And they MUST provide parking in this area, no waivers for parking. Their need to stay open till 2 AM will not work for the neighbors whose homes back up to the Brewery. We are saturated with alcohol establishments in this area and do not need another, especially one connected to Anheuser-Busch InBev. YUK! We will continue to flyer and let people know about this wolf in granny's disguise enterprise in the Temescal!

Re: “Golden Road Brewing's Meg Gill Visits Oakland To Defend Controversial Plan To Open Beer Garden

Why do people pretend parking is the issue? I think the issue is an already gentrified neighborhood whining about anyone else being able to enjoy it.

I love her calling the criticism abusive. She sold out and doesn't want to be called on it, so we are the aggressor. Nice defense.

Re: “Oakland Officials Are Divided Over a Proposal to Create a New Department of Violence Prevention

What this article does not say is that Richmond reduced its homicide rate by more than 70%. If they can do it, Oakland can also. Since there is absolutely no credible evidence that any community in the country has reduced homicides or crime by increasing the size of its police department, why continue to fall for this fallacy. People, even the Federal Justice Department in reports recognizes that our broken, biased, unaccountable criminal justice system, including cops, CONTRIBUTES to sustain and increase crime. Unlike the Mayor and her administration, Reid and McElhaney are trying.

Re: “Golden Road Brewing's Meg Gill Visits Oakland To Defend Controversial Plan To Open Beer Garden

'Many view Golden Road as yet another gentrifying force out-of-towners parachuting into town simply to cash in on Oakland's trendiness and tech-worker, market-rate-condo clientele"

Says the author (and editor), who just recently moved into town himself, and figures he will establish his bonafides with the "development is bad" audience. I cant stand InBev (and wont drink any of their products) but there are bigger fish to fry in Oakland.

If the author cared more about Oakland maybe he would be less concerned with trying to establish his own credibility with the activist crowd and more time encouraging his writers to tackle real issues affecting Oaklanders.

An entire complex was burned down in Emeryville/Oakland border (for the second time), under suspicious circumstances. Guess you wont be reporting on that at all. Luckily there's the East Bay Times that still takes reporting seriously.

GR is a tool in InBev's Disneyfication of craft beer -- that's the truth about the matter: http://wearebrewstuds.com/features/craft-beer-dear-oakland-just-say-no-golden-road-brewing/

Re: “Oakland Officials Are Divided Over a Proposal to Create a New Department of Violence Prevention

Sounds like Plan B. Problem is we never got a Plan A.

One major longterm police issue has been staffing. Many Oakland public safety critics think that having about 25% more cops could make a difference. Yet, as far as I know, we lose nearly 10% of our cops each year--a very high attrition rate. Hard to maintain staffing levels at that rate. Expensive. Inefficient.

Reducing attrition no doubt has to do with police morale. Would that be handled under Plan A or Plan B?

Re: “Oakland Fire Department Hits Hills Homeowners With Erroneous Inspection Bills

I am just gonna drop a line saying that if you wish to get detailed data about Oakland and support it with numbers then you should take a peek here:
http://www.city-data.com/city/Oakland-California.html
although I am not sure they have fire safety statistics but maybe I didn't dig deep enough. Anyways I second Mr Hall in that matter.

Re: “Golden Road Brewing's Meg Gill Visits Oakland To Defend Controversial Plan To Open Beer Garden

Ms. Gill, you can't claim to be independent if you aren't. Calling you out isn't "fake news." You sound like an Orange Cheeto follower. And pleeeease, no one is criticizing you because you're a businesswoman (really??). No one wants Bud Lite disguised as an IPA. No one wants drunken, overgrown frat boys pissing in a residential neighborhood. No one wants the increase in traffic and the loss of street parking. No one wants your corporate controlled beer. We like and support LOCAL craft brewers.

This is rich. A neighborhood full of gentrification doesn't like another entity coming in and gentrifying them.

Make Oakland Now! actually suspended its support for this measure before it went to the Finance & Management and Public Safety Committees, so advising both Public Safety and Council before its meeting last night. http://tiny.cc/oq77ky

Re: “Oakland Officials Are Divided Over a Proposal to Create a New Department of Violence Prevention

What? Another commission/ department to "study"an urgent problem? Perhaps energy and resources could be better utilized in making a serious attempt to get to the root of violent crime. Forming departments is taking the road of least resistence.

Re: “Oakland Officials Are Divided Over a Proposal to Create a New Department of Violence Prevention

While Oakland has one of the highest per capita violence rate in the country and something needs to be done, has this been done anyplace else? Is there any evidence that additional bureaucracy will be a solution or is this just theater to facilitate feeding money to council members pet projects.

We certainly need to stop the bullets flying.
