Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
Excellent, timely reporting by EB Express. Horrifying situation pointing out desperate need for housing which is actually affordable---especially in no-longer-affordable west Oakland.
It says two people died in this fire. Can we acknowlege them?
This is truly horrifying. This landlord was able to operate his campaign against tenants largely unchecked. Worse, it sounds like the situation in this building was well known to the City and could have been intervened upon before people died and were displaced. It's time to start addressing safety concerns for the wellbeing of tenants, and not just let them be used when landlords want to chase people out of buildings.
isnt this great for craft beer entrepreneurs. More breweries being bought should provide more capital back to the investors and entrepreneurs which in circle can invest in other ventures. Dont see the big problem here
What a despicable slumlord. He should go to jail!
Thanks Day and Kevin for the clarification.

After I reported that the fire sprinklers in my unit were painted over by my landlord + a full dozen other building violations the city didn't fix and of the problems. They then assured me that Oakland's Building Department would begin doing preventative inspections to protect its citizens. Lets ask how many of those have been accomplished and to what end.
Well said Curtis Funderburg! Well said! And Trump is becoming the second worst POTUS with him actions and his greed!!
Phil Jones you are an idiot and you are probably looking forward to large tax increases by the state of California. It will happen when federal funds are withheld from the left coast.
The problem here is that ABInBev buys up distributors in order to destroy the channel for independent craft brewers to get their beers distributed. This is completely unacceptable and any ABInBev owned and operated business should be boycotted.
The concerns are legitimate.
The craft beer movement has been one of the most exciting pushes away from factory food back to local craftsmanship, community values and a resurgence of beer culture in this country lost since before prohibition. When the largest multinational beer corporation tries to pass as part of the authentic local brewing community, that is not just a cute marketing tactic, it is strikingly lopsided and cynical competition for the up and coming brewers rooted here. It's a tactical move to pull apart the famous cooperation among the independent brewers. Beer monopoly dressed up in a shipping container is not good for beer, not good for Oakland, not even good for Oakland business. Score one for Brazilian-Belgian multinational ABImbev, though. Here comes the fake authenticity blueprint ready for every cool town in first American then elsewhere.
BondGraham and Winston certainly deserve recognition for their good work.
Needs to be said that coverage of Oakland government, politics and community has long offered endless opportunities for productive investigative journalism. Local media ignore most of Oakland's economic and social problems and the destructive and shameful failures in city hall.
There remains an enormous amount of work yet to done telling the stories of what really goes on in Oakland.
I agree that this seems a great development for North Oakland. I don't follow the editorial sub-text that runs through this report that somehow AB InBev's involvement is a bad thing - unless it's a personal bias harbored by the author?
ICE is racist just like Trump and the Republican Party.
Vivia Lee, your cruelty is revealing that you lack any humanity, shame on you! - Ron Taylor
I am pretty sure Lady Esther's opened on 7th Street before 1968. I remember it as a child. Glad to see it back
I'm excited for the development this can bring to the neighborhood! Of course we hope for more small local shops, but having an anchor like that as an attraction is a great start!
Hopefully Richmond's share of funds go to my city.
