Re: “Jack's Oyster Bar Shutters in Jack London Square

Regardless of price to portion issues, most restaurants/eateries at JLS are struggling... And there are a lot of places worth the trip! Check out Overland Bar & Grills new mostly mexican menu with the addition of gumbo, burgers and some american fare. Also the Authentic Bagel Company has just that REAL bagels! They offer them in traditional preparations and in their own sandwiches and plates.. and take a scone to go for later. Steel Rail Public House is also a must on your trip to JLS. Easy to park or catch the broadway shuttle most any day or time.

Re: “Mid-Week Menu: R.I.P. Genova Deli

Genova's Deli is mediocre at best for the outrageous rip off prices paid for a sandwich with hardly any meat and just a pinch of veggies, so you pay $9 for the bread. Their lowest price per pound for sliced deli meats is $17! Raviolis are tasty but mostly pasta dough and sauce is good but a medium sized container is like $20! Total con artist scam going on at all their locations especially walnut creek. Another rip off example is all their prepared dishes or soups. One of the last time I bought a chicken tortellini soup for $12, it didn't have any chicken, not one piece! Freakin people give you nothing and empty your wallet! I do see the workers giving heaping portions on orders to their friends near closing time and some people didn't pay either! I hate Genova's and would never go there again and don't recommend it to anyone unless you like being robbed! They were probably good at one time and now use and abuse that past reputation to get away with robbing people and so many stupid idiots wait in line for hours for a piece of shot sandwich!

Re: “Actual Cafe and Victory Burger to Close on December 23

You know who contributes the most to gentrification? People who BEGIN the process by finding an empty warehouse and turning it into something artsy. That is where it all starts. That is the point of "sensitive dependence upon initial conditions" in chaos theory.

But once gentrification starts going...it is hard to stop. The East Bay Area was too far gone long ago. Ghost Ship marks the point of R.I.P. where people who live for the funk suddenly wake up and realize funk is highly flammable. Time to get a day job like a citizen or move to a city with funk you can afford. Yes, you kicked off the whole gentrification process somehow. The local real estate is now worth billions. The yuppies frolic in wealth.

Now you are evicted. Leave.

Yes, the ugly and ungrateful final stage of gentrification. The funky people throw up their hands, curse, and leave.

You know there is a robotics industry just starting to jell in Boston? Ten years from now who knows what could happen? And if trade actually kicks off with Cuba despite many obstacles and bumps ahead...maybe someplace in Florida is the next big thing...maybe Havana is the next big thing. But it sure ain't Oakland anymore.

There is an amazing amount of depressed real estate left over in Florida from the collapse of the housing market and Hurricane Katrina. Food for thought.

Anyway...

Things have a beginning, middle and end...you just have to move on if you are lucky enough to live through the changes. And you say...wow, remember that cool little place we used to go? Sigh. Then you find the next cool little place. You kick off the next big thing.

Re: “Jack's Oyster Bar Shutters in Jack London Square

sad to see it close but the prices were too high for the amount of food you get.

Re: “Actual Cafe and Victory Burger to Close on December 23

@Phil Wolff
A victim of his own contribution to gentrification, you mean? There's always a beginning to every process. People tend to think gentrification begins with and ends with tech workers and condos.
Obviously it begins with punks, artists, and """community""" cafes.

Re: “Actual Cafe and Victory Burger to Close on December 23

A semantic quibble...

You can have a waiting list for new employees when you pay enough. They'd be lined up with applications if you paid 2x, 3x, or 4x the minimum wage and keep each working a full 40 hour week. They'd be able to live well in Oakland.

Sadly, this would force you to boost the cost of already expensive meals beyond where you're competitive.

But it's not really that you can't afford to pay your workforce, it's that the cost of housing (which is an indirect cost you pay through wages) has risen too high. You're a business victim of Bay Area gentrification.

This is so sad. I love this place. It's always packed, I had no idea it could be losing money.
