Re: “Hundreds Challenge Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf's Nighttime Protest Ban, Planning Commissioner Among Those Detained

Stop calling these people protesters! They are nothing more than hoodlums who are dissatisfied that Oakland is flourishing. Get used to it, Oakland is getting better and you'll have to leave -hopefully sooner than later.

Re: “Jazz Musicians Sing the Blues

What a well written and insightful piece. It's so hard! The pull between a good gig and a gig that allows you to pay rent. I suppose it's having a balance so that you can be an artist and play amazing muisc, but also SURIVIVE. That's if the gigs are out there at all that is, regardless of whether they're artisitically credible ones.. This blog is also quite illuminating - thought I'd link it for you guys. http://www.functioncentral.co.uk/blog/2015/05/how_to_make_living_playing_jazz/

Good for Schaaf, send these people home if they continue to act like children.

Re: “Hundreds Challenge Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf's Nighttime Protest Ban, Planning Commissioner Among Those Detained

Charles Rachlis writes, "The fact that protesters may break a few windows or burn a few cars is not the issue." Huh?

Maybe not for Charles Rachlis, who rants about "the masses" -- usually no more than a couple hundred protestors in city of 400,000 that elected Libby Schaaf as Mayor, and in which there was widespread outrage at the May Day vandalism. (Of course, in Rachlis's eyes we've all been duped by the media and the machinations of the Ruling Class; presumably we need "re-education" by those who thus insult our intelligence.) So much for "masses"!

Meanwhile, Valerie Winemiller writes, "Prohibiting demonstrations at night leaves few alternatives for people, especially working people and students, to speak out about police violence and racism." However, as others have pointed out, "What's gained by letting protests linger until well past dark? All the people with familial, academic, and professional responsibilities the next day can't participate that late.... And of course the criminal element emerges the later you go into the night."

Besides, what gives demonstrators alone the right to avoid being inconvenienced, at the expense of inconveniencing everybody else? Does the phrase "at their convenience" appear anywhere in the Bill of Rights?

"Time, space, and manner" restrictions are Constitutional. I hope the Lawyer's Guild challenges the new limitations; perhaps it's time for the much-touted Crowd Control Policy to be re-litigated in view of the destruction Oakland has sustained at the hands of those who've taken it as a license for abuse.

(All that being said, forcing demonstrators onto the sidewalks is a stupid idea. As has been written elsewhere, "The SIDEWALKS should be kept clear; that way the vandal/looters can't get to the stores. Keeping people close to the property you're worried about protecting is a TACTICAL FAIL.")

Re: “Hundreds of Demonstrators Take to the Streets for a Second Night of Protests Against Mayor Schaaf's Nighttime Ban

Schaaf is inviting OPD to use its old crowd control techniques which are the ones that use projectiles, explosives, and chemical agents on people who, at the very worst have ever committed misdemeanor destruction of property, but for the most part are categorically law abiding.
Everyone needs to remember that these tactics are the ones that lacerated Kayvan Sabeghi's spleen and put Scott Olsen in the ICU with near fatal head trauma. Schaaf is gonna get somebody killed over broken windows. Glass is replaceable, lives aren't.

Re: “Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf Institutes Ban On Nighttime Street Protests

I think this is actually a great opportunity. If people RIGHT NOW get right RIGHT in this mayor's face (Occupy City Hall!) we could get leverage with the most powerful (and oft ignored) individual in the city.

Why not? MAKE her be responsible to her constituents - MAKE her focus on education, Job development (help long standing residents in entrepreneurship) AFFORDABLE HOUSING!!! Public transportation etc etc ...

Re: “Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf Institutes Ban On Nighttime Street Protests

I forgot to add this link. It's really cool what's happening and our Oakland Police are contributing. This page explains what Obama is doing with Oakland and a number of other departments around the Nation. I'm very proud of the progress we, here in Oakland, have made. Too bad the mayor sucks.

Re: “Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf Institutes Ban On Nighttime Street Protests

This Mayor appears to be an A$$hole. She is DEFINITELY demonstrably (pun INTENDED!) stupid. The Oakland Police and the Community have been doing a lot better. Then this IDIOT comes along and pulls - let's face it - a B!tch move. By that I mean cowardly. She basically said I don't trust my own people to be civil. Now, I understand that vandalism and looting can occur. However, the People and the Police have been doing pretty good.

The Oakland Police are working with Obama RIGHT NOW for crimminies sake!

Check it out:
http://www.contracostatimes.com/breaking-news/ci_28085714/oakland-police-becoming-example-departments-seeking-reform

“The fact is we were threatened with arrest for marching,” said Cat Brooks, one of the facilitators of the protest. “This was a Black women’s and children’s rally saying to the police, please stop killing us, and our woman mayor organized the harshest response we’ve seen yet.”

EXACTLY. The mayor is responsible for this.

“There clearly is a shift in tactics by the police,” said attorney Anne Weills, who was in last night’s march. This woman ALSO appears to be an IDIOT.

"In an interview today, Mayor Libby Schaaf acknowledged that she ordered the prohibition on nighttime street marches in Oakland."

Re: “Oakland Police Threaten to Cite Residents for Barbecues by Lake Merritt

We all know there's PLENTY of money here now, right? How about the tech money hoarders contribute something - instead of just TAKING. I hate you people. I have NOT been impressed by the behavior. PURE Entitlement - it's repulsive.

Re: “Oakland Police Threaten to Cite Residents for Barbecues by Lake Merritt

In Brooklyn in Prospect Park they have it SET UP for People to Party. They even have a band shell if I remember correctly . . . it doesn't have to permanent either.

Maybe make it an out door ice skating rink in the winter (and string lights - just like the lake) and a pumpkin patch for the kids in the fall . . .
