Re: “If Oakland Cracks Down On Underground Warehouses, It Will Snuff Out The City’s DIY Soul

Safety is obviously the most important issue. All venues must be safe, as I would have hoped everyone has learned from this awful tragedy.

Beyond that, we don't need bureaucratic interference with our artistic events. But we cannot do without safety.

Re: “If Oakland Cracks Down On Underground Warehouses, It Will Snuff Out The City’s DIY Soul

A crack down is needed. Landlords rent to people and the people then break the lease by doing illegal activities. Often jimmy rigging electrical or plumbing to accommodate more people. The Ghost Ship better wake people up at City Hall.

Re: “If Oakland Cracks Down On Underground Warehouses, It Will Snuff Out The City’s DIY Soul

No one should die for the sake of art. Art does not get murdered when it follows the rules in a gallery. It gets better because if you want it bad enough you will jump through the hoops to get it. The can do spirit of humans has taken harder blows than this and thrived. This jackass Ion needs to be charged with murder. He is a drugged out poser that doesn't care about the lives lost. It's all about him. I bet the criminal in him wants to hide, but the attention whore side has to go for the light. What if you were at the party? Instead of complaining why don't you go out and help the underground be safe. Get a code book, read it and develop a working relationship with a fire marshal. You could do a whole series of articles on what it takes to be safe and why it so important. Or, you can sit safe behind your computer, whine and throw rocks.

Re: “If Oakland Cracks Down On Underground Warehouses, It Will Snuff Out The City’s DIY Soul

"If Oakland attempts to shut down every party that doesnt have the right permits, even if its for the admirable reason of preventing another Ghost Ship disaster, then it may inadvertently snuff out the beautiful do-it-yourself spirit that animates so much of the citys soul. "

HA HA - someone was able to deface the t-RUMP sign by throwing paint at it! Now I can smile when I drive by...

Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

Greg Broderick .... excellent post and right on target!

If you've lived in the unit for 21 years at a low rent threshold, would you have not saved up enough money to purchase a small home/condo for yourself? Although I feel for the tenant, he has no right to live in that unit indefinitely.

City of Oakland Rent Control Just Cause Measure EE needs to be revamped. An example is that it is helping keep the wealthy remain in (low) rent controlled apartments, while affording them the ability to become landlords themselves. I have seen liberal judges rule against landlords attempting to evict tenants for making modifications to their units without consent of the property owner (hello, Ghost Ship fire).

Again although I feel for tenants in bad predicaments, these tenants should have planned for the future.

I hope that Alkebulan-Ma'at is getting tenant/legal counseling to assess his rights in this situation and hopefully keep his home!!!!

Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

Not sure that someone over 60 can be thrown out without the LL taking proper measures to do so. The Trump sign has nothing to do with laws protecting tenants.

Trump and his supporters never write "Make America Classy" on their hats.

Re: “Oakland Warehouse Fire: 'It Was A Tinderbox. I Don't Recollect Anybody Coming Out.'

So sad, this is devistating. I pray for all the familes and friends who lost people in this fire.

Re: “Oakland Warehouse Fire: 'It Was A Tinderbox. I Don't Recollect Anybody Coming Out.'

Gary this just isn't your scene (nor mine), but many, many such events take place in safe venues providing community and a healthy outlet for people in a wide age range. I do agree about the piles of junk being a big problem and we can blame the occupants, the landlord, and city of Oakland for that, BUT NOT the part goers.

Unlike you, Garry, who apparently entered into this world as a crusty adult who elected to have his sense of tact surgically removed

Is he doing this to attract arson and therefore have the house burned down to collect insurance?

Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

Imagine if the landlord spent as much time and effort protecting a human being as he has that Trump sign...sigh.

Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

This is a flagrant act of unlawful harassment, discrimination and even a borderline Hate Crime.

A lawsuit is definitely in order. If not (as an absolute last resort with nothing else left to lose) burning the property down in an act of civil disobedience.

Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

This sucks for all parties involved. For the tenant, it's impossible to find decent, affordable housing in the Bay. It would also suck to have to live in a place with a TRUMP sign stuck to it (yes, even Trump Tower).

While this new landlord sounds like a royal a$$, we have to remember a couple of things:
1. He does own the property
2. There is no right to affordable housing
3. When it's convenient for an entity (public or private), the entity will shut down an "illegal" or non-registered unit
4. Rent control is fantastic in theory, but it really does distort the market in a coveted location city
5. The current housing frenzy is part of a larger cycle that cannot be changed by one or two good-meaning rules
6. We all pay for rent control, and we, as a society, have to decide how and how much we are willing to pay
7. Real estate companies are like any other company - they're there to make money
8. The new arrivals to Oakland have generally been making it a much nicer, safer and more livable city (despite higher housing costs). I've only been here for 10 years and have seen enormous positive changes. We still have a long way to go, though.

Finally, I personally hate hearing statements about how, "I should be able to live here because I grew up here" or other arguments in that vein. Nobody has a right to live in any particular city nor should anyone be excluded from a particular city because of some accident of birth.
