Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
@Deborah Tharp: Name one offense--just *one*--that's a felony or misdemeanor under Prop 64 that isn't already now, because we can name *several* offenses that are felonies or misdemeanors now that are completely legal under 64!
@Dave Armstrong: Your "most federally conforming law in the nation" didn't prevent over 15,000 people, disproportionally black and brown--which you're *not*, right Dave?--from being arrested for weed related felonies and misdemeanors in California last year; Prop 64 will cut that number in *at least* half, based on the experience of the other legal states and DC, not to mention that the mere *claim* "I smell marijuana" by a cop will no longer give him carte blanche to detain, search, seize suspected drug money, etc, etc.
Its where the people go--not to jail anymore--that matters; where the money goes--not *your* pockets anymore, right Dave?--is a distant second, at best.
Stop calling prop 64 legalization. It's criminalization, fees and fines
I think you need to read it. Tax revenue will go to important state needs, not to "corrupt corporate cannabis cronies", but I like that alliteration.
The law we have now (Prop. 215) is the most federally conforming law in the nation. If we we're following it properly there would not be the problems we have today. Blame this on our own state and local governments for misleading and misguiding us to form unlawful entities just so they can "Cash in on our Use"! Prop. 64 does NOT put money into the much needed and necessary infrastructure it puts the money into the hands of the corrupt corporate cannabis cronies and their shills! Maybe the spokesman should read all 62 pages of the measure and find out for himself rather than just collecting a paycheck for once again misleading and misguiding the people!
We should all look at all the issues and everyone involved, not just what makes our like (me, myself and I) better off? It's time we act and vote like a country, together on the important things like Justice Reform. Because "No One Belongs In Jail for Marijuana"
If I were going to vote for Trump, I wouldn't do so because of the militant believer Pence. Hemp has been a long hard road in the US, and we don't need to sabotage our attempts now.
Some of you are thinking short-term. California needs to legalize in order to send a message to the world, legalization is the next step. Cannabis is plant and therefore like all plant you have the choice of getting you vegetables at a local independent farm or you can buy the same plant from a corporation, the difference is who you are supporting. (buying it from)
I will be buying from independent farms no matter the size, only the quality.
Proposition 64 is a death knell to the farmers of the Emerald Triangle, their families and the communities who depend on this, the last industry standing after the collapse of the logging, lumber and fishing industries. In Prop 64’s despotic future, farmers & growers are forced to pay taxes before they sell their harvest. A medium sized farm that produced 400 pounds of buds & leaves would have a tax bill of over $60,000 and for the first time ever taxes have to be paid before any sales are allowed.”
Proposition 64’s insidious plan institutes controls that treat cannabis as a dangerous substance, and not as a medicine. It does all it can to force users to return to the dark and hide their use. The chant, “Out of the Dark and into the Light” reflecting overcoming the long time stigma of cannabis use will be replaced by laws that make it a crime to smoke outside where someone could see you or smell cannabis smoke. Smoking outside, even where cigarettes are allowed, is forbidden and the homeless, including homeless veterans who smoke cannabis to treat their PTSD will be committing a crime, subjected to fines and even jail if they are unable to pay. There will be no more smoking cannabis at an outdoor concert or other events. It will be like the "Bad Old Days” when law enforcement waded into crowds to arrest people for smoking a joint. This time they will be wading in handing out tickets resulting in fines.
This is not legalization it is domination, extreme controls, massive regulation and taxation without representation. The Official Libertarian Party Executive Committee has it right when they advise a NO Vote on 64 because it, “does more harm than good, damaging medical availability, and creating additional criminal offenses and regulations.”

What a BS idea fk ing wannabe pimps.
It's about time we see legislation pertaining to extracts.
Talk about killing the goose that lays golden eggs.
Oakland isn't on an island. There's definitely other locations where these dispensaries would go to forego these ridiculous requirements.
And Mayor Schaaf is where......
Oakland has been at the forefront of this nascent industry and is to be commended.
That being said, the hundreds of millions in investment dollars will quickly look to other, more welcoming municipalities, in which to invest.
It is NOW Oakland's to lose if they don't move quickly to adopt a more welcoming ordinance.
I AM TRULY EXHAUSTED FROM ALL THE STRESS AND ANXIETY FROM THE PAIN OF THIS DIAGNOSIS AND DISEASE THAT I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH FYBROMYALGIA NEUROPATHY AND GASTEOPERIS .I AM IN PAIN EVERYDAY. I REALLY NEED THIS LAW TO GET LEGALIZED HERE IN NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA ASAP.
Calling the kettle Black?
The racial and social injustice folks are the people making and enforcing the laws! We've all heard the saying "guns don't kill people, it's the people using guns"! Well this scenario is NO different, lawmakers made marijuana laws many years ago based on racist and corporate interest. To keep Mexican immigrants from coming to America, to keep African Americans and long haired white hippies down and from thinking freely. To keep hemp and cannabis from competing with oil, plastic, timber and big Pharma and agriculture businesses. So to turn around and blame the exact same entities that create and enforce the laws by voting in an even more racist and social biased new one (Prop. 64) is ludicrous and completely insane. As long as the same people (government & enforcement) are behind the new gun (law) pulling the same trigger then social and racial injustice will continue to be a predominant part of our society. Don't let them fool you with false rederrick and lies, the only way we can change the outcome is to either take away the gun (NO 64) and replace (vote out) the itchy trigger finger people behind the gun! Just wait and see the courtrooms and jail cells fill with more and more people (black, white & Latino, etc) when "drugged driving charges" and 18-20 year olds "possession of use" cases become the systems new cannabis cash cow! No one has anything to say? Shock and awe? When the truth hurts you can hear a pin drop!
Shame on Oaktown! The City is already "profiting" from unlawful businesses (dispensaries) "selling" the controlled substance marijuana by "taxing" the illegal activities! Now they want 25% ownership too, I'd like to hear them explain to Uncle Sam and the IRS how a governmental entity can blatantly violate current state law and federal law! Can't anyone see what the hell is going on here in California? They'll put individuals and organization lives, assets and livelihoods at risk of potential prosecution just so they can "cash in on our use"! Our own lawmakers have turned the "Compassionate Use Act" upside down and made it the "Compensation from our Use Act"! Wake up cannabis community and smell what our local and state governments are cooking! California has created its own drug cartel from the grey area they created, if you can't beat the "black market" just form your own "grey market" and take over the industry with corporate and government greed!

This cannot stand. Seriously, Oakland, you'll make plenty of money, but don't do it this way proposed. Twenty-five percent ownership and a board seat, please. I counter with 2% and a non-voting board member.
typical redneck city council...greedy illegal, oakland> no nazi germany..fk off oakland or your sins will come back to you.
