can't say we are not experiencing change in the east bay. we have moved from a 'melting pot' to a 'medical pot'. apparently, cannabis is not all bad.
Sadly most people who talk about solving the homeless problem know little about its cause. 90% of the time its drug abuse and mental instability. Which is different than just lack of affordable housing.
The realities underlying the immigration debate are that we have more than enough people, more than enough imported poor people (see The Characteristics of Unauthorized Immigrants in California, Los Angeles County, and the United States by Karina Fortuny et al; the February 9, 2006 report by the California Legislative Analysts Office (LAO) on efficacy of border police; the Analysis of the California 2001-02 Budget Bill by the LAO), and more than enough imported criminals (read about Jamiel Shaw, Kate Steinle, Juan Francisco De Luna Vasquez, ); consider the disproportionate medicare fraud, food stamp fraud, and mortgage fraud by recent arrivals from cultures in which crime and fraud are normal - look up Glendale medicare fraud. Look up HHS OIG Most Wanted.
George Rockwell has a valid point. We should also implement the visa entry exit system that was legislated years ago. It has been 17 years since the entry-exit system was first enacted in the 1996 immigration bill.
However. the forces for easy entry are wealthy and powerful. Look up Gelbaum and the Sierra Club. Look up Clinton, Huang, andJames Riady.
About this 'Wall' business, and the illegals it is supposed to keep out: Sweep it aside for a moment and riddle me this--Why is there NEVER a discussion about what is required to become a LEGAL immigrant? What do these wretches have to do that they haven't or won't,.. present a fortune in fees, fill out forms in legible English, grease the right consular/embassy palms (as if..), and wait, and wait, and wait, like in 'Casablanca'? This aspect really should be admitted as evidence.. for the source of the problem. Well, one source, the other being US' Monrovian foreign policy..
I agree George needs a hug and Micheal comes off as an angry troll. Your not helping the liberal cause spewing venom. You make us sound as bad as the otherside dude. Open your mind and your ass will follow.
George needs a hug.
george rockwell has the problem all bigots and fools suffer...
belief in his own stunted humanity and lack of informed real world solutions... racist and jingoist with a touch of sexist nonsense for distraction... a black female, namely Rep. Barbara Lee has been the voice for reason and justifiable restraint from hatred and war mongering just for one prominent example... george rockwell has not made any convincing points to justify his ignorance... george rockwell is a constant embarrassment to any sentient being...
I totally agree with Clarence C. Johnson. Did NOT understand the brouhaha about where in the building the affordable units were located. I'd like to point out some advantages of living on lower floors: Residents of the lower floors will spend less time waiting for elevators, will possibly be able to walk the stairs to and from their apartments whenever they want to, and will be able to get in and out a lot faster than residents of the upper floors. Upper floor residents will have better views. Life is a trade-off.
Jerry. How old are you? Have you ever served in the military? Worked as a paramedic? Assisted in a soup kitchen? I hope you provide yourself with the opportunity to engage with the human race as a complete human, to experience him/she/their/it suffering first hand. Your nonchalant critiques are cruel.
Jerry, and other people that fall for these right wind talking points, are ultimately spending a lot more money than they would be if we had a better welfare state. They'd rather be spiteful about those in dire straits than realize how much of their tax dollars go to making the rich richer, and how little those rich people pay.
What should be recalled about Biffs was its Colossus of Rhodes goofy sign. That was worth preserving, but it was the first thing to go. The other iconic beacon, also on Broadway, was the sign for Daves Coffee Shop. That too just seemed to disappear overnight. Not so strange is the fact that it was purchased by the Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art. Both signs had a friendly, folksy zing to them. The friendly, folksy zing seems to be an element in short supply.

I wonder why there are so many 70 year and older representatives in office and keep getting reelected. How could they possibly have the energy to do their jobs. I'm now in my 60's with no health problems and I know personally how stamina and passion for work can fall off.
Regarding the "My Voice Matters" article, these women are directimg their frustrations at the wrong person. They should be addressing their letters to our own US Senator, Dianne Feinstein. I use the term "senator" loosely, because for this past critical year, Feinstein has been missing in action.
I actually wrote her to inquire if she was still alive, because she was nowhere to be found on the camapaign trail to stump for our first female candidate running for the highest office of the land. She is the senior senator representing the most populated state in the nation, and she decides to take a powder for the entire 2017 election.
California is supposed to be leading the nation for progressive causes, and we have an 83 year old senator who has absolutely ZERO interest in representing our interests. She is just riding out the gravytrain until her retirement in 2018, but these next two years are critical to the survival of our nation. Can we really afford a do-nothing Trump lackey who intends to rubber-stamp every pick he submits for both his cabinet and the US Supreme Court? That is EXACTLY what she intends to do. Go along to get along seems to be her guiding philosophy.
Feinstein has been milking the assassination of Harvey Milk for way too long. That unfortunate event was a gift to her and she's made a lucrative career out of it. It's time for her to step aside and let Gavin Newsom assume her duties as our voice in Washington. She obviously is no longer up for the challenge. It's the right thing to do for both California and our nation. Dianne, please step aside and let someone who is physically up for the challenge speak for California.
I asked Schaaf via FB, if she raised the issue of racist mascots with any NFL owners. No response. I concur, she is a liar and hires worse: Peggy Moore.
Where does the buck stop? (from one who spent 12 years in iffy warehouse spaces in Berkeley and Emeryville for my band. The buck did not stop with Jerry Brown-Ron Dellums and hopefully one-termer Schaaf. Anyone remember when Brown deigned to attend a Council meeting to vote against a 10% low income set aside in buildings seeking height or other zoning variances? At the time, Emeryville and Berkeley had 20% low income set asides. A reason I can afford to live in Arreguin country. We have taken Berkeley back from Bates and his billionaire developer friends. I guess that $$ goes to Skinner and Schaaf now>
Libby Schaaf: Fire the lying, violent, opportunist Peggy Moore before she incorporates you into her game. John Iversen
looks like a great Xpress issue!
I also think that the Board including in its 12 year $120 parcel tax the provision that increase in the Board's middle school charter school enrollment, over and above any District middle school enrollment increases, will trigger a redistribution of District pay raises to fund addition pay raises for mostly non-union Board charter school employees is going to upset Oakland Unified School District employees when they see their pay checks being reduced.
Whomever thought up this redistribution of employees pay raise to charter school employees for Measure G1 should be fired. And, passage of Measure G1 means that this dumb idea will be in place for 12 years.
Anyone want to join me in voting NO on Measure G1 dumb parcel tax?
Why the **** are we allowing the legalization of recreational marijuana to be smoked??? When we are trying to reduce cancer rates and other diseases linked to tobacco and marijuana use. OF course there are always fools who are reckless with their health. Sure grandpa may have smoked for 200 hundred years--but he had emphysema and was reduced to a very small world around him. DO YOU REALLY WANT TO SUFFER LIKE HE AND MILLIONS OF OTHERS DID SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY DISRESPECTED WHAT WAS A SACRED ELEMENT OF OUR ABORIGINEE'S CULTURE THAT WAS NOT DONE ON A RECREATIONAL BASIS. WHY ARE CONTRIBUTING TO GLOBAL WARMING BY ADDING MORE UNNECESSARY CO2 TO THE ATMOSPHERE SMOKING AND HEATING UP OUR PLANET? Recreational use of any substance that is intended for medication is an inappropriate use and inappropriate behavior.
I have nothing against the use of marijuana for medical uses--when the delivery system is not burned or smoked, chewed but as a health care worker --I see medical marijuana as a positive thing in medicine. That said Recreational use of drugs leads to people not being in control of their lives they are driven by the drug of their recreational choice--we see this most easily in tobacco smokers where they will defend the right to smoke and fight you over it and they do not know that they often smell bad and cannot find the pleasure of good taste of foods they eat like those who are not inappropriate in such matters.
Lets helped stop global warming world wide by stop unnecessarily contributing CO2 to the world's atmosphere--we were not designed to smoke to begin with or use tobacco et al. We can save billions of dollars by not smoking or using other delivery systems and be much healthier.
Not sure how to send a "letter to the editor" so am doing it here. How about an article exposing the real money behind the so called "Grocery Tax" which is being heavily advertised as hurting small markets in underserved neighborhoods. Is this proposed tax only on sugary sodas or ALL bottled drinks containing sugar? Does it also tax actual food, fresh and canned? If it taxes soda only, who is paying the people featured in the TV and print advertisements? Are they real store owners or actors - the voters would like more clarification of this since we are being bombarded about a grocery tax which may not even tax groceries!
I rather think it was Mr Tabor who is having a hard time leaving junior high behind; bad experience with the football team?
And perhaps no coincidence he refers to the predominately African American athletes in the article as "boys" who need to "grow up."
Sports and entertainment are a diversion. It's Mr Tabor who is taking that too seriously, and setting up false conflict between say enjoying the Dubs and political action. All while casting shade on the thousands of Oaklanders who like a good basketball game. At their local junior high or at the Coliseum.
Thank you very much for such a thoughtful and well written letter. I am a 68 year old man who gave up my own addiction to "sports" when I turned 50. One day, I realized the utter stupidity of deciding what I could plan for a Sunday only after hearing whether "my" team was at home or away.
I still shoot hoops, but I never watch. In fact, I'm seldom aware of which sport is even in season--one of the blessings/curses of retirement.
Thanks again; it's nice to know that my antipathy to professional sports is shared by others.
