The Kingfish always set the standard for dive bars for me, a lot of real characters hung out there. Once awhile, as I remember it, the Cal Sororiety women would all swoop in at once - I recall the old guys saying "geez, these preppy Cal girls all got fat butts now, Don't they?" I used to get a kick out of that. It's was true, 80's era preppy girls all had fat butts, they didn't work out like they do now.

The thing not mentioned about the reopened publik house is that Scott worked in that neighborhood, on that same block none the less, since 1994. That he's been serving that neighborhood from the coffee shops to the neighborhood gastropubs for the majority of his adult life and had patroned Ye Olde Hut since the day he arrived in Oakland as a 22 year old dropped off after making a cross country move with the money in his pockets. Scott is exactly who the tired old bar owners should be turning their businesses over to because he isn't some tech douche gentrification piece of shit.. He opened that space with love and adiration and the utmost respect for that bar and the glory he wanted to bring back to make it the place it was when he stepped in there (when you pilar were in kindergarten and have no concept of), a lively fun approachable neighborhood watering hole with quality drinks and friendly faces.

Oakland has a lot of heart to it. Oakland is a very proud city for all races but for black folks, it's got so much pride and so much to celebrate. Oakland is proud and for good reason too. It's the home of the black panther party, home of the Black Muslim bakery, home of many famous black musicians and music groups such as Toni Tone Tone, Too Short, Luniz, Dru Down, Mc Hammer, The Pointers Sisters, Sly and the Family Stone, and many more. It's also home to a large number of many successful black owned businesses and I know this for a fact cause I'm from the Bay Area and I know Oakland very well. Oakland also has positive things going on in its black community, big time. Kingston 11 is carrying on a rich tradition.

Nice article on a wonderful establishment! The author might also have noted that Oakland has a number of forward-thinking wine shops that specialize in natural wines, including Oakland Crush, Ordinaire's retail section, Paul Marcus, and Bay Grape. Let's also give a shout-out to Trail Marker among Oakland's natural wine-makers!

Nice article. However, you like many others, neglect to mention another local winemaker from Berkeley (close enough to Oakland, I say) who is one of the pioneers in the low-alcohol, no new oak, non-manipulated style of wine. That would be Steve Edmunds of Edmunds St. John. Just because he's been at it for 30 years doesn't mean he still isn't on the cutting edge, using concrete eggs for his Rocks & Gravel blend as one example.

What a bunch of hooey. Internet order beans when there's tons available locally? I've been grinding and brewing coffee undoubtedly before the author was born. I started out with and sometimes still do pour over. Not any better than a quality machine. Paper vs gold filters- no difference in taste.

Awesome. I've been cutting way back on meat to reduce my carbon footprint. Whether I go all the way vegan or not, it would feel great to support these places and to feed my sweets addiction at the same time.

I basically agree with what Gary said and also feel a disproportionately large influx of a particular demographic has overrun SF, causing a great loss of its charm by pandering to new money. Northern CA is a special place (at least for me over my 30 years here) as an earthy, connected, easy going, and communal lifestyle.

However, I do really appreciate the discovery and appreciation of Oakland by newbies. I like the ideas that are pouring into Oakland now and think this generation's influence, if it can keep it humbly grounded, can accentuate the Oakland/Northern CA experience that in this tech age seems to has left most of SF homogenized and detached. Cool, local, homey or exotic neighborhood stores offering take-out with an Oakland connected vibe have a place and should be appreciated on what they bring to their locality. To me, that's what I USED to like about SF.

I suggest El Campesino Bar And Grill at 232 23rd Street- across from the O'Reilly's Auto Store. Very nice and HUGE space. Food pretty good. Staff friendly but slow and aloof at times (if that makes sense). Nice addition to the neighborhood.

Crazy how the story lead to this comment dialogue. Everyone take a breath... try to find what you get about what the other person wrote and see if you can actually communicate. Oakland is not a 100% mess and where it's headed is not 100% horrible or 100% great. So step away from the corners and have a dialogue. Howden Market seems like a great idea. I do hope they're able to sell some lower cost items. I've enjoyed much of what's opened across town over the last five years, but things are starting to creep up price wise. Steel Rail Cafe in Jack London Square has many low cost items and it's been instantly popular.

The Melitta paper filters aren't all THAT bad. And Chemex are are only marginally better, and a lot pricier. Both need to have a bit of boiling water poured over them once they are in the cone, before the coffee is added. This washes away any loose fibers and removes the objectionable "paper" taste. Both brands benefit from this treatment. Once this is done, the difference is only in the price.
