Re: “Martyrs, Martyrs Everywhere

We will never "save our children" until we save our families. Fatherless homes and broken families all the in context of gangsta rap, bitches and ho's mentality toward women and the glorification of pimpster male dominance by pick your favorite rapper is what is presently at the heart of the deterioration of the black community. The fact of claimed injustices woven into the prison system doesn't explain how a million black men got their in the first.

I guess you never saw the news video of the robbery and beating of an elderly black man by a black youth while another group of black men stood by and did nothing to help him. Why would that be? Because none of those black young men had ever had a father who loved them and never knew a grandfather who loved them and their father. They're as pathological as they come and have no ability to attach emotionally or otherwise suffering the most vital institutional deprivation, the deprivation of family.

You can point your finger all you want at whitey but that doesn't explain the perpetual downward slide toward the abyss of degradation generated within the community itself. As one black pastor pointed out, celebrating blackness for blackness sake isn't constructive. Just because Snoop Dog is a commercial success or a "black success story" it doesn't mean at all that he's making any kind of constructive contribution to the community. He's not. All he's doing is perpetuating the above mentioned hip hop attitudes about life. It's black youth who are listening to his likes and the gangsta rappers of the day and the influence is so severe and the attitudes so pronounced that by the time they are young adults they are completely morally degenerate. They become unreformable, unemployable and unmarriageable. We can place the locust of the poroblem on white disinfranchisement but when the line of crime, violence and murder gets
crossed, a community has to begin looking at itself. In other words no one is forcing anyone to pull a trigger in a drive by that felds a black youth who is trying to reach life's goals in the more conventional means, education and personal achievement.

For the record, Faye Stender became romantically involved with George Jackson while trying to defend him and the Black Panthers who were the worst sort gangsters masquerading as political activists against injustice. When she realized that his associates were purely criminal she distanced herself personally from him. It was her son who opened the door when her assailant used a girl as a decoy pretending to be in need of help. With a gun in her son's face, the assailant and assistant gained entrance into the home where Faye was roused out of her sleep. He was bound and gagged and was made to watch as his mother was shot several times execution style in the back forming the bullet pattern of a cross while her daughter lay asleep upstairs. Miraculously Faye survived but was left paralyzed and in severe unrelenting pain. Unable to endure her suffering she ended her life a year later. Sorry if you want to cast doubt on the accuracy of the above article which accurately reports the facts, but those are the facts.

Finally, many were shocked when youths entered a church service and shot identified targets during a worship service. The resolve of black pastors in Richmond was to try and reach out to the troubled youth of the Richmond community to communicate love and understanding toward them. They intend to knock on thousands of doors in an effort to reach and identity youth in need of love and encouragement and try to save at risk youth.

The answer for the black community is where it has always been but too many are too sophisticated too hostile to give heed to the message of the Christian Gospel. Brushed aside as a white man's religion or simply atheistic skepticism, the Gospel is cast aside. Ruch Limbaugh has begun a mantra since the election of Barack Obame, "How's that hope and change working out for you?" Things aren't getting better for too many people in the black community and pointing fingers with trumped up white injustice is not going to end the epidemic of crime and social pathology found in the deepest parts of troubled communities, coming, by the way, to a white community near you.

To white liberals I can only say that you have grossly deceived yourselves with your self-righteous, Marxist-socialist world view. Taking up a counterfeit system of righteousness and the cause of the victims of western capitalism has done nothing for the black community.

White feminist have done nothing for women and especially black women. The poorest black communities are littered with abortion clinics, unlike Latino or white communities, just waiting to collect on a black woman's journey of taking control of her life by ending her child's life. Inter generational welfare and the disaster of the likes of the housing projects have harmed and not helped the black community. White liberal value of sex and family and the the sixties obsession with drugs, sex and rock and roll ushered in destructive ideas in our culture which facilitated the further erosion of the black community.

White liberalism has utterly failed the black community and your moral supremacist attitudes which make you self-righteously sympathize with the their plight has only perpetuated white dependence not black independence. You are not the answer for the world's ills through your Marxist-socialist sacraments like abortion, redistribution and socialism.

Black community, take note.

Kids are the ones he raised the ones he lived with and the way you express yourself of Mrs. Guzman (EVEN IF IT HURTS) your jealous see one night stands don't count because you may have spread like wise too Tom, Dick and Harry. She doesn't play dumb the way it sounds your envy is very strong and it took you a while to express yourself what is it the way she dresses or how beautiful she is or is it that your not the one he came home too or maybe it's that your not his widow. oh! I know your not going to be able to get a tummy tuck, lift your boobs, Whatever it is he was a good person and bent over for anyone in need. As a father he was good to his TWO children. It's backbiting you can never and will never be my cousin. So every time you see her just continue to envy her because that is all you can do. Re: “Martyrs, Martyrs Everywhere

Sad indeed that all the socalled revolutionaries have not succeeded in decreasing the prison population, the number of children in the child abuse, neglect and foster care systems, or increased the high school and college completion rates. Counter-revolutionaries may be a better term for such folks....... True revolutionaries lead children into safety, and happiness by working to create healthy neighborhoods through personal action, goal-oriented life-styles and mindful, responsible, giving lives.... ...but how does one do that if all one knows and teaches to the next generation is the culture of victimhood and ungratefulness. Nothing would be healthier if people were to work as volunteers for a year in a truly poor third world country....that would bring mindfulness to the disgruntled....but it takes true courage to take that leap. Few dare.....

Re: “It's Better to Not Know

How does Ms. Kerr know what Ms. Bologna wants? Whether or not Ms. Bologna had slept, it's not Ms. Kerr's place to call her irrational. It is also quite possible that the desire to seek justice for victims can co-exist with the grieving process. Ms. Kerr is certainly entitled to her beliefs and her position, but I think it's irresponsible to characterize all crime victims who support the death penalty as confused people who don't know how to grieve. Everyone responds to tragedy differently.

Re: “Martyrs, Martyrs Everywhere

The truly devastating effects of J. Edgar Hoover’s plan to silence by eradication any and all dissent to the policies of an oppressive system is still fully operational long after his death. Cointelpro, the central force of his agenda, used as it’s main tool, the powerful voice of the media to spread lies, foster confusion by manipulating ignorance of specifics and manufacture misinformation in total Hollywood fashion. Journalists and the professional yarn spinners who call themselves authors prey on an unsuspecting publics fears and misconceptions to further the aims and policies of agencies such as C.C.P.O.A. This particular entity, which is the largest and most powerful union in California, puts out a steady stream of outright lies and half-truths designed to maintain the status quo of the Prison Industrial Complex. To do this they utilize the voice and influence of the media and intellectual elite. Just say it and it’s true to millions who do no research and those who knowing it’s insidious nature do not refute its claims. Many will simply accept the position put forth by Anneli Rufus and the East Bay Express on Black August because she is considered an intellectual and is writing for a paper that was once progressive. Unfortunately for all concerned, miss Rufus has done no research into the statements she put forth as truth in her article. George Lester Jackson was never convicted of killing anyone. There were no heavily armed panthers bursting into the Marin county courthouse. A single seventeen year old youth walked into that courtroom and was shot to death moments later by San Quentin guards whose policy was kill everyone In the van. The tagline Free em all belongs to a totally different movement and has nothing to do with Black August or George Jackson. Research! Fay Stender was shot by a madman who had no connection to George Jackson and acted out of his own warped imagination. Once again it’s easy to just throw misconceptions out there as media sponsored because most will not question it. There was no gun smuggled into the San Quentin Adjustment Center under a wig. In nearly forty years no one has ever proved that some radical entity was responsible for a gun finding it’s way into San Quentin Prison. Try walking around your office with a two-pound automatic pistol on your head under a natural or any other kind of wig. This is not to mention the thirty pounds of shackles or bending over naked for strip searches under the watchful eyes of several prison guards waiting to find anything out of order.

Black August speaks to prison policies like N.H.I., (no humans involved), that separate prisoners from even the right to live once the are convicted of any crime and sent to prison. It speaks to those who are especially singled out to the point of being set up for death for speaking out against the injustices that permeate the Prison Industrial Complex. It speaks to those who like Brother Bashir Hameed, become ill after decades of incarceration and extremely inadequate medical attention and die locked in a cell because they are not considered human and deserving of care. Bashir Hameed died in prison on August 30th 2008 because the prison administration refused to take him to an outside hospital. To them it was not that important in the scheme of things having to do with confinement and finance. Your article encouraged all to believe it’s all so simple. They’re murderous radicals and undeserving of sympathy or even minimal respect or concern. The theme of Black August 2008 was Save Our Children. Our youth are dying in the streets daily or rushing headlong into the arms of the Prison Industrial Complex. Black August is about finding ways to reverse that trend knowing there are so many like you who simply do not care. N.H.I..

Re: “Martyrs, Martyrs Everywhere

It is sad to see that the East Bay Express would publish something so irresponsible and lacking in integrity and commitment to upholding the standards of professionalism and ethics in journalism. Ms. Anneli Rufus’ article, “Martyrs, Martyrs Everywhere” was grossly distorted and seemingly ill-intentioned. A responsible journalist would have checked the content of their article for accuracy and possibly done background research for context. It appears that Ms. Rufus felt she was suitably qualified to write about a topic she has no apparent background knowledge of or particular connection to. Unfortunately her lack of proper judgment has reflected poorly on the East Bay Express and has undoubtedly tarnished its credibility.

It is widely known and accepted among scholars, professors, lawyers, politicians and the general public that there was a highly aggressive and illegal war carried out by the state against many liberation groups and individuals who were fighting to change the irrefutably racist laws and policies that were in place in the 50’s and 60’s. Lets not forget that these movements grew out of a need for Black and Brown communities to defend themselves against the racism and violence of police brutality, political disenfranchisement, economic oppression and the cultural genocide prompted by state institutions. No reasonable person can deny that the actions of that generation’s activists and freedom fighters were absolutely necessary to bring about political and cultural freedom for people of color, although that freedom is still a work in progress.

The state doesn’t deny that the creation and operations of it’s Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO) were illegal at best and to some, even comparable to tactics used previously by fascist regimes. Under COINTELPRO, the FBI worked with local law enforcement to infiltrate, disrupt and dismantle these organizations and lay the foundations for future militarized warfare against citizens. They used the opportunity to develop and improve highly militaristic tactics and tools including agent provocateurs, advanced surveillance systems, terror tactics such as physical and psychological torture, murdering members and bombing offices. Domestic warfare against these people was carried out on the streets, in the community, in the media, in the courts, in jails and prisons.

If Black Liberation groups like the Black Panther Party or individuals associated with them are really these lawless and savage criminals, then why is it that the state needed to initiate and create illegal activities and use criminal tactics to lock up these people up? Many of the victims of the state’s illegal and inhumane actions were illegally shot and killed by police who were never held accountable. Many are still being held in the state’s monstrous prison system, despite the overwhelming evidence that they are innocent, or at the very least, did not receive a fair trail by any court’s implied standards.

Black August stands to commemorate these victims and work actively to prevent our youth from falling prey to these forces which seek to funnel them into the prison industrial complex, which is in itself evidence of California’s policy of the criminalization and mass incarceration of (mainly) Black and Brown youth. In 2006 California’s prison system boasted the second largest prison population in the country at over 175,000 (roughly 1 in 200!!), just behind the Federal prison system, and it has increased since then. According to the U.S. Department of Justice statistics, California actually has the fastest growing prison population, which is currently over twice the capacity of the population that the prisons were built to hold. It is important to note that the biggest prison construction boom took place during a period when crime rates were actually dropping. The United States as a whole has a higher incarceration rate per 100,000 than all of the countries it so self righteously labels as undemocratic and uncivilized.

Ms. Rufus’ article was deeply offensive and discriminatory to those of us who have had to struggle and sacrifice for the right to live, an obstacle that she has been privileged enough not to have faced. I believe it would be wise and possibly redeeming for the East Bay Express and Ms. Rufus to, at the very least, issue a formal apology to the people for the extreme lack of professionalism and integrity in this article.

Re: “Martyrs, Martyrs Everywhere

HUNH?! Maybe there are some missing paragraphs? Is this one article or a police blog?! I have no idea what your point is; you LOST me. Smells like poverty pimpin or fear tactics. Why else would you pick a bunch of seemingly random events loosely tied together under the guise of an article except to disparage and denigrate Black August? Did you do your research on the history and legacy of this month that holds such profound significance in the community before writing this? To say it's "honor a murderer month" shows a disturbing level of ignorance on your part...
Not witty. Not verbally or intellectually adroit. Not helpful.

Re: “Martyrs, Martyrs Everywhere

Martyrs...Everywhere...

With a crippling system of White Supremacy being the mode of operation in this country, what else can we expect?

This article clearly speaks to us through that lense...create fear about anything that challenges the status quo. Yes, the Black Panthers did just that, many political prisioners that suffer daily - challenged the injustice of the time.
History tells you Jim Crow, education that was Separate but Not Equal - was their motivation to sacrifice their lives to Demand Freedom and Justice.

I wonder if you wrote an article on George Washington/Presidents Day or even Veterans Day would you be so glibe as to suggest that, Revolutionaries are simply Murders?

I attended Black August the day after a young pregnant woman was Murdered in the streets of Oakland...The celebration of self determination and healing for our community was especially important on that day. We gather for a reason...many more should attend, None But Ourselves, Will Free Our Minds...
