If they were so customer friendly why did they close the store without paying their teachers or even telling us to collect our store credit. Same shit different big uncaring store.
Yes, I completely agree! They have a great selection of used books for those on a budget or out to make a great discovery without having to pay full price [while reaching out and taking a chance]...
When I know that I want to buy a new book, I order it through them to support my local independent bookseller. Please do the same; we need to support local gems like this one!
Hank, the owner is a really good guy. Sometimes I hit him up with words or expressions with which I have struggled in my reading. He responds with something humble like, "You know, I'm not all that smart..." then proceeds to help me out with an explanation that totally clicks. Maybe I'm not all that smart either. Then again, The Book Shop may owned by a man who is as humble as he is wise.
Rene works for Hank. She's great! I have yet to see her fail to smile for anyone who walks in the door. She [like Hank} is very knowledgeable on books [both new and classic] and always willing to help in person and over the phone. They've held books for me so long that I've felt guilty. Yet, they've still had that book on hold for me every time. It feels great to get that kind of helpful service without having to spend tons of money.
Overall, I give The Book Shop in Hayward an A plus!

Ruby's Garden is delightful flower and children's clothing store. The children's clothes are interesting and creatively made. A warm, family friendly ambience permeates Ruby's Garden. Mary and Mae, its owners, "know" children and parents, evidenced by their unique offerings of quality children's accessories and clothing which is largely composed of organic fabric and created by local artisans. The flowers are carefully selected, not of the cellophaned, grab-and-go grocery variety. Beautiful crafted greeting cards, paintings, food creations, and other works done by local artists help decorate the space to further make it a lovely environ. Mary and Mae have created a retail space that invites community to gather, gives local families an opportunity to support local, environmentally sensitive artisans when they purchase unique quality children's items and fresh flowers at this lovely store. Ruby's Garden very often hosts special family activities on its front porch or within the store. Fantastic contribution to the East Bay Community and its families, Mary and Mae! My best wishes for your every success!

Dennis von Elgg is an amazing acupuncturist. His clarity, gentleness and healing presence always inspire me to take better care of myself and others. I recieved some very helpful tretaments from him for anemia and a bad cold during my mid-pregnancy. In addition, Dennis is a very gifted teacher.
Dennis is a wonderful acupuncturist. I see him for prenatal acupuncture, which I was skeptical at first, but it made the first trimester much easier. Thanks Dennis and I'll see you soon.
I have to agree here, Berkeley Bowl should not have been mentioned in this otherwise great review of Alameda's favorite produce stand. I've been shopping off and on at this store for several years now and completely wrote it off during previous ownership because it spiraled downward so bad, but since Dan has taken over I have become a regular shopper 2-3 times a week. Giving Dan's the good review was the right thing to do and I'm happy for him. Today he and his son donated their time and their peaches at the meals on Wheels event at Rosenblum Cellars they both worked hard making sure that over 1500 people tried their fruit. Thanks Dan and Joey - Great job!
I have to say to the writer of this review NO, I WOULD NOT like to be browsing the aisles of Berkeley Bowl. I am very happy with the quality of the produce, the cheeses and breads and the fine customer service from the very friendly staff at Dan's. The prices are the last thing on my mind (though they are good). Maybe next time, and there should be a next time, Dan will get his review all to himself. We love you Dan, Keep up the good work!
Dennis von Elgg clearly loves the practice of traditional Chinese medicine -- he really puts his heart into it. As one of his former patients, I can tell you he really cares about his patients -- I recommend him highly.
knit-one-one is a relaxing, social and hilarious way to spend an afternoon or evening. sile pampers and entertains you while the instructors (all of whom are patient , funny and easy to understand) guide you though creative and unique projects. i love it here and whether you are an expert knitter, never knitted or are somewhere in between i guarantee you will love it too!
I love love love Knit-one-one. The women (and men) who teach classes and attend classes are amazing and a wealth of knowledge. I attended one class and was completely hooked! I would recommend Knit-one-one for all knitters! They can teach you a new trick and you'll have fun doing it!
Berkeley Bowl?!? Why even mention it? Dan's is second to none! Why would anyone drive to Berkeley for their produce when Dan's is right here in town? I wouldn't even think of it! I love the selection and if they don't carry it, they'll order it for you. That was my experience with Lotus Root last year. I can get good fruit straight from local farms at Dan's (the corn is to die for!) My kids love the honey sticks and my husband can't live without the olive bread! Congratulations Big Dan! Berkeley Bowl.. give me a break!

Hooper's is back!!!! We are alive and well. An Oakland icon since 1939, Hooper's is gearing up for a wonder 70th year aniversary next year. We are one of Oakland's longest lasting companies and are still doing well.
Not only do we remain an Oakland icon, make and sell delicious chocolates and put smiles on faces but we also work extensively with our Autistic employees through our employment/training services and work with the California Autism Foundation.
Can you think of any more reasons why someone would want to make this place one of their favorites??? I can't.

Way to go Dan!!!!! When I was a teenager new to Alameda, California Dan took my brother Peter and I junder his wing, wich had an span of 20 feet and wrapped his arms around us and taught us how to work the produce stand. we were all Alameda High School juniors and seniors listening to the Dead working at was then Pauls Produce. GOOD TIMES!!!!! I sure do miss Dan and his contagious smile and character. Love Ya and Miss Ya, Kathleen (a.k.a. KAY FAHY-BOSTON)
I live next door to a produce market in Fremont and would rather drive to Alameda to Dan's Produce because his stuff is fresh and the atmosphere is inviting. Dan is a well-informed produce man and I would trust no one else when it comes to what I put in my body. Keep up the great job, Dan and don't shave that moustache!!!
Hear Hear! Dan's Fresh Produce is all the best! Congrats Big Dan!

Bombay Music has moved half a block away at the corner of San Pablo and University (2000 San Pablo Ave). This location is bigger and they seem to have bigger selection. Their new phone number is 510-845-3311. They also provide parking.
