And yet, if you believe today's Chron, nothing but chain stores will save Telegraph. As told to us by recent out-of-state Cal grads who not only displaced residents during their tenure but are now apparently bent on remaking the place in their plastic fantastic image. All that local stuff costs too much, they whine.

Why is Old Weang Ping in East Oakland not on the list? It is, by far, the best and most authentic thai food I have ever had and IT IS a neighborhood joint. If you haven't tried, you should. It is ran by a son and his mother. You have to call before you go to let them know that you are coming. Knock on the door and you'll see what I am talking about.

Thanks for using the name Jack London District which is what the community living there uses. It is nice to be recognized as more than just the hinterland to the Square (and lets face it there isn't even a Square there).

And don't forget "Acme House of Music" (www.acmehouseofmusic.com), a soulful little music store and school that has been there for some 43 years! It's a real gem. Vintage and collectable guitars, audio gear, new instruments and gear, great teachers, community vibe.
And "Full House Cafe" for breakfast and lunch (red flannel hash!) and "Clips and Snips" the new children's haircut spot--great for adults too.
And super delicious, super cozy "Trattoria Laurellinos"(http://trattorialaurellinos.com/), yet another on the list of gems in The Laurel.

Personal thought? I agree with everything posted by Kelly. Lets simply hope that the picture is meant to aim focus more on the taps otherwise we wouldn't go for the beer, rather, to see a beautiful face full of beer knowledge!

How on earth can you get so much information wrong when you have the website address? Check the site for the correct hours of business and food info. And how on earth can you take such a bad picture of one of the most beautiful women around? Jeeze.

I agree there should be more discussion about the gentrification of the neighborhood and that should be a discussion everyone gets involved in. People moving in and taking over the neighborhood to the detriment of the people who've lived there their entire lives is a problem. But isn't it better to have some businesses to serve the neighborhood than a liquor store or empty storefronts or liquor stores on every corner? I certainly don't believe in ignoring the community that exists in Oakland but I do believe in dedicating more money and time to our parks and community spaces so everyone can benefit.

I find it interesting that this article seems oblivious to the fact that those of us who live around where these new galleries that are popping up are finding these "maddening crowds" delivered to our doorstep, mostly without any thought from the low budget facilitators of how their pet project is negatively influencing tenants who intentionally avoided loud, scenester areas when choosing apartments in years past.
I used to go to "Art Murmur," now I am being forced to look for a new apartment to avoid it.
I love and support the arts when promoted responsibly, but would argue that not all venues listed above "merit support from local art mavens." At least, not if those mavens understand that art, like love, is wonderful and expansive, but most of us prefer to go out and find it, not have someone choose what it is for us, and when we will get to "enjoy" it in our living room.

I wish the east bay express would openly admit its disinterest in the Brown and Black people of Oakland who have not only lived and built and dealt with the city as home and refuge spanning multiple generations but who also stand to loose all sense of recognizing there home by the recent migrants who build, push, and ignore the community which stood before it, me and my family included.
I am all for Oakland becoming revitalized but there is no sense of critical thought of how the revitalization process leaves out huge aspects of the population.
This "post-racial" ideology is b.s and continues the tradition of white supremacy by erasing persons who do not fit into societal "progress." Oakland is not a C.C anymore and has no room for those who argue for the active, vocal, and prominent inclusion of people of color.

I come from SF to shop at some of these stores all the time! Better selection and MUCH better price. Pretty Penny is my favorite - try to find affordable vintage at such great prices in SF. Not very easy.

Miette bakery is also located in the former ice-warehouse along with Bocanova. A small retail space fronts the bakery where the smell of chocolate and butter creates a warm welcome. Miette is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. here.
