Re: “Taggers by Night, Muralists by Day

Only the East Bay Express would have us believe that extortion can be disguised as "restorative justice." I'd be willing to wager $20 that if I vandalize Robert Gammon's automobile, he won't be willing to pay me to repair the damage.

Re: “Taggers by Night, Muralists by Day

I might propose a 25 cent per unit surcharge on spray cans sold in Californica, to finance the construction of a new tagger prison system that would feature large vertical concrete slabs that remain clean during the miscreants' eight to ten years of incarceration, the better to remind them of the meaning of respect and civilisation.

Well done. Excellent use of crowdfunding. Keep us posted on how this develops.

Re: “Documenting Oakland's Recyclers

Very interested in the video - I live right near there. When I pass the people sleeping in the parks I constantly wonder how we can do better?

Re: “Documenting Oakland's Recyclers

I live in Dogtown, right down the street from Alliance. My neighbors and I very much dislike Alliance for it's documented and repeated neglect of our neighborhood. Unfortunately, the homeless who gather here, also piss, shit and do their drugs (a lot of them are addicts) right across the street from our houses. I've found needles in my yard more than a few times. I salute the hard working homeless people I see busting their arse to make a living, it enrages me to no end that Alliance takes no responsibility when it comes to cleaning up after the people they make so much money off of.

Just because they rap doesn't mean they're not in a Shakespeare theater.

Re: “Local Nail Polish Company Floss Gloss Capitalizes on the Nail Art Phenomenon

That’s interesting! This is why it is said that we should turn our passion into our profession. If Sack had not been given the chance to water his passion, perhaps she would not have been as successful as she is now.
The article takes me back to Aldous Huxley who in his essay “Beauty Industry” says that one industry unaffected by the general depression is the beauty industry. The modern cult for such craze makes this thing clear that now the rapidly growing industry is the fashion industry. We wish Sack and Lee best of luck.

"Most importantly, the actors — two of whom were plucked from a family-run Shakespeare troupe — create a realistic portrayal of male ennui in the 'hood."

Re: “The Street Academy Turns Forty

Just for the historical record. Grant was an elementary school serving the kids of Hoover/Durant who lived above Grove ST(now MLK)..It's boundary was MacARthur to West Grand, from MLK to a block above Broadway. In those days there was no freeway and the Calif. School For the Blind was where the highway patrol is now. There was no 580, no huge hopsitals on Pill HIll so you had a viable student population. That said, congratulations to the Street Academy for it's pioneering efforts in Alternative Ed.

Re: “Beyond Anarchy at PM Press

The right to disassociate as well as associate has, to my knowledge, always been a rather important aspect of anarchism. He did the best thing he could in the situation, and it in no way goes against anarchist principles. It's not like he destroyed AK Press when he left, and if he'd rather spend his time with something else, well, why the hell not?
The remaining members of AK Press still have their egalitarian model set up, and they don't have to deal with a person who'd rather not be a part of that particular model anymore. It's a win-win.

Re: “Resurrection of Rappin' 4-Tay

if i knew 4-TAY was still doin his thang, won't miss me there to appreciate REAL WC RAP in it's different sub-genres. a legend in it's own right, 4-TAY repped early in WC hiphop when there was not much support or history to learn from, putting it down for the playaz, those who don't know are missing out!! like G-Funk here in the LBC, you won't find music anywhere else with this sound and feel! if you reading 4-Tay, yo, you inspired many that you don't even know about. keep doing it in Cali and worldwide and thats REAL TALK.
