I listen to all the albums I review multiple times. I thought New Spell had a lot of potential, especially Leanne Kelly's vocals. Hope the band keeps at it rather than feels discouraged.
wtf is up with the New Spell review? i listened to it and am wondering if you listened to the same album. you lost a lot of credibility with me.
I totally disagree with your harsh New Spell review. If that's what high school jazz bands sound like, I'd love to know what school you went to. And harsh reviewer, what kind of music are you working your ass off to get out there- or do you just criticize others for a living?
Note that Eggplant Casino plays every 2nd Thursday at Disco Volante as well. Hot Einstein's Oct. 20th show at Disco Volante is also a monthly gig--every 3rd Saturday. Thanks for helping spread the word about these bands--and yes, Eggplant Casino has a great stage presence.
Less thesaurus browsing, more listening, please.
Very good you have referenced the CD Do Salgado e do Doce ( Salt & Sweet) of the Brazilian singer Vagner Santo. Different voice with excellent tracking performance and enhanced with many great musicians. Congratulations to you for releasing foreign talent in yours column. I'm American, but like a lot of Brazilian music and I recommend the CD. (Sandy P., San Francisco).
I've gotta say, I think you all should get more knowledgable and experienced music critics to review Cd's in the Express! At the very least , I would expect the writer to get the genre of music correct for the record that they are reviewing. Howell Devine is far from a "twangy country band" They are a blues band through and through. I think 10 outta 10 elementary school kids would have known that to be the case after one listening of HowellDevine's CD, "Delta Grooves"
Rachel Swan can say anything she wants about the Cd's she reviews, and that is fair enough, for music IS very objective & subjective to each individual listener ( and critic), but girl, you gotta go back to school and learn the basics of musicology, so you will know what kind of music you are actually listening to!

About that hot shit Hurry Up Shotgun singer Austin Pitts:
Austin Pitts is one hella howler, completely congruent with my previous seventies statement. Had he been around back then when COCK ROCK WAS KING and flashy vocal gymnasts were all the rage, Pitts would’ve found himself at the epicenter of an old-fashioned major label bidding war. Every day would’ve rained hookers and coke on him, forever and ever, amen.
Austin Pitts would’ve turned all major solo deals down, would’ve kept his bandmates Craig Eastman (on bass) and Adam Kayne (on drums) and found an even bigger record deal, although the label would’ve made them shorten their name to “Shotgun.” They would’ve been initially forced to tour with Molly Hatchet and Blackfoot, but they would’ve survived that indignity and gone on to be SUPERSTARS, and you never would’ve had yer ears filled with loose shit like Journey or REO Speedwagon. Ever.
Also, Hurry Up Shotgun sounds like California. Again, don’t ask me to explain, just hurry up and buy this record. If you think I’m wrong about any of this, let me know.
(But you won’t, cuz I’m not.)

Hey Rachel -- Thanks for the rundown on my new holiday CD. I think the rock ballad you refer to is my cover of Matisyahu's Chanukah song released last year, "Miracle" -- a great addition to the slim Chanukah repertoire. In addition to the Savanna Jazz gig in the Mission you mention Fri. nite Dec. 2, I'm gigging in Oakland at the wonderful Avonova, Sun. Dec. 11, 3 p.m. Kids welcome. Both gigs feature Santa -- folks can sit on his lap and tell him their holiday wishes -- as well as a great trio (Frank Martin or Grant Levin on piano, Fred Randolph on bass, Akira Tana on drums). -- Lisa B (Lisa Bernstein)
