Re: “Oakland Disciplines Twelve Cops in Sex Crime Case

O'Malley and entire family should be charged. Really think this is the first time this is happened? Contra Costa County is the most corrupt police force in the world as far as I'm concerned it's reasons like this that the mafia was invented

Re: “Oakland City Council Questions Need for Court-Appointed Police Monitor, Delays Renewing Contracts

We've had oversite for many years. I not sure what it's supposed to accomplish. I remember the "riders" they were fired along time ago but what deficiencies in the department is the continuing oversight trying to correct?

Re: “Court Orders Landlord to Fix 'Inhumane Conditions' in Lead-Contaminated, Fire-Damaged Fruitvale Building

That's a nice looking building. I wonder why the owner doesn't fix it up. Rent control? It can be very difficult to repair apartments while long term tenants live in an apartment. You can't do lead remediation while perplexed are living there. I guess the owner will be forced to evict?

I arrived at Madison Park at 10 am and it was jammed packed.

Just a quick correction - attendees had gathered well before 10am at 9th and Madison. I arrived with my group at 10am and there were already several thousand people there.

Re: “SF Chronicle Editor Bans Newsroom Staff From Attending Saturday's Women's March

AND the Chronicle's coverage of the Women's March in the Bay Area is dismal. Despite over >200k having marched locally, the cover photo is from Washington DC. And the piece about the SF march had minimal real information - e.g. turnout numbers.

Re: “In Oakland, Massive Crowd Of 100,000 Turns Out For Anti-Trump Women's March

I particularly like the sign with the great drawing of Trump that said, "I'm not a real President, But I play one on TV." What great Oakland artist created that? I want one.

OPD told CBS 5 later on that it was closer to 85K. It felt that big today, moving like molasses.

Re: “SF Chronicle Editor Bans Newsroom Staff From Attending Saturday's Women's March

In other news, the Chronicle has banned its entire newsroom staff from going to restaurants, so that no one will think the paper's food critic is biased.

Re: “SF Chronicle Editor Bans Newsroom Staff From Attending Saturday's Women's March

John Q: Please note that reporters did not feed Hillary debate questions (current DNC head Donna Brazile advised Hillary that a debate in Flint, Michigan, would include a question about Flint's water crisis -- Whoa! If true), but Sean Hannity did vouch for Donald Trump's otherwise invisilble opposition to the Iraq invasion. Meanwhile, Hillary's use of a wrong email server got more coverage than all of Donald Trump's scandals, conflicts of interest, defrauding of Trump U. students, and sexual assault combined.

Re: “SF Chronicle Editor Bans Newsroom Staff From Attending Saturday's Women's March

How many of those covered by the Chronicle's ban ever, under any circumstances, have even the tiniest bit to do with covering national politics? Three, maybe? I'm not real concerned about Mick LaSalle's politics.

Re: “SF Chronicle Editor Bans Newsroom Staff From Attending Saturday's Women's March

Perhaps it would be helpful for people to read the position of the Ethics Committee of the Society of Professional Journalists.

I would think they do not come up with their best thinking regarding ethical issues by reacting to the heat of the moment (or our disgusting new leader) but that they create guidance on ethical issues based on careful and thorough information, thinking and discussion.

I would think that posters here may benefit from doing some homework before forming their own opinions.

See here: http://www.spj.org/ethics-papers-politics.…

Their opening:

"The SPJ Ethics Committee gets a significant number of questions about whether journalists should engage in political activity. The simplest answer is No. Dont do it. Dont get involved. Dont contribute money, dont work in a campaign, dont lobby, and especially, dont run for office yourself."

They go into very good detail here on what is OK and what is not OK. A news reporter (with extremely significant requirements of objectivity) have much more firm boundaries than a political commentator, as an example.

Re: “SF Chronicle Editor Bans Newsroom Staff From Attending Saturday's Women's March

Ms Cooper should immediately resign her position.

As a former award-winning national news reporter who practiced that profession for 14 years, followed by 20 years of practice as a licensed California attorney, I am appalled at Ms. Cooper's attempt to strip her employees of their rights under our Constitution.

Journalists do not give up their rights as citizens in exchange for their press cards.

No journalistic ethics I've ever encountered as a professional journalist or an attorney have even suggested that journalists be barred from civic participation.

I am not just outraged at Ms. Cooper's decision to force her employees to choose between their jobs and their duties as citizens to participate in our democracy, I am also amazed that she assumes her newspaper's readers would expect that Chronicle employees never dare show their face at any type of political gathering, and that doing so should cost them their livelihood.

Ms. Cooper should resign immediately, because she has placed her newspaper's credibility in question. Journalists deserve every single Constitutional right the rest of us enjoy. I simply can no longer trust that Ms. Cooper is not also attempting to censor her employees in ways that the rest of us will never hear about.

At a time where journalists are being attacked by everyone from Ms. Cooper to the White House, we need managing editors who encourage their employees to be good citizens, and who trust their audience to understand that excellence in journalism and participation in our nation's democracy are not mutually exclusive.

Re: “Judge Slams Oakland Council's Decision Not to Pay Police Monitor, Orders $100,000 Payment Within Month

Monitor Warshaw has a financial incentive never to find OPD in compliance. The judge could set a six-month limit on the contract for any one monitor - but he doesn't. Quan, then Schaaf, and the councilmembers never sought this remedy. None of them really cares about the super-high level of robberies and burglaries in Oakland. This latest dustup shows that City Hall does not know how to wage a tough fight, for there is no doubt that judge Henderson has a deep and abiding hatred of OPD, matched by his disdain for the victims of crime in Oakland.

Re: “SF Chronicle Editor Bans Newsroom Staff From Attending Saturday's Women's March

Ms. Cooper sure has a lot of power that she is misusing as a woman in a leadership position. This is not the time for taking away people's rights Ms. Cooper, it's never a good time. We have all forgiven you for having a paper that is written at 8th grade level, we cannot ignore your willingness to infringe on a women's right to assemble. What's next, will you not allow them to go to clinics or take birth control, or vote? You don't have my support or readership.
