Re: “The Curious History of the Eritrean and Ethiopian Veggie Combo

Excellent article. I've been enjoying the combo platters but now I understand the cultural significance of the offerings.

Re: “Biff’s Coffee Shop In Oakland Was Googie Glory

It's not just Biff's... The old Kwik Way is threatened. And SpaceBurger just closed for redevelopment. Most of these projects are cheap low-rise apartments or condos. Yes we need housing, but we're losing some of the character of Oakland. Soon it will look like any generic medium-sized city in the US.

Re: “Havens for Cinema Junkies: The Legacy of East Bay Movie Houses

What a great walk down memory lane - I spent so many hours at the UC Theatre growing up in the 70s and 80s that I've lost count. The Rialto was a nightmare - "sound bleed" is a kind description of the crimes committed there; buy your ticket for one film, enjoy overlapping soundtracks for 3 movies! The Northside was a great little theater, with respectful audiences and quirky films (anyone remember "Android" or "Nobody's Fool"?). The Act One and Two, The Oaks on Solano, and The Berkeley on Shattuck (where I worked for a summer in 1985, Joe Dante's "Explorers" playing to empty seats) were also terrific, now long-gone memories.

Re: “Oakland’s Most Iconic Tree Is Named After A Socialist Firebrand: Jack London (Of Course)

Even a "champagne" socialist beats the hell out of all of the neoliberal "free market" types who dominate local government not to mention most local opinion.
