Re: “A Fatal Threat to California's Chronically Ill Kids

Interesting, most families that have CCS feel they do not have adequate care, especially through their Medical Therapy program.
Our experience has been terrible, it has delayed treatment, we have so many "stories"
We have no other choice than to look forward to the day she ages out. A year and a half or so. The general consensus is it's a program to cut costs, an even more limited HMO than Medical Managed Care. My daughter has both. We've had more results with MediCal.
They CCS are also ill equipped to handle teen clients, since no peds Doctor will take a patient over 18. Those kids, young adults get left out in the cold. They're required to provide care outside their neteork, but the wait is absurd.
To call it coordinated care would be negligent.

Re: “Why Are So Many Rays Dying In Lake Merritt, And Sharks At The Berkeley Aquatic Park?

Thank you, Naomi. I mostly responded to the headline, which, in typical EastBayExpress fashion, hinted at dire deeds, nefarious schemes, and chicanery in public office. Then the artice went on to state that actually the same dead rays might have been counted several times, basically making the headline untrue. There's no scientific study I know of on fish population kills and population densities that indicate anything like the headline indicates. In my opinion, the Lake is by far the cleanest, most pollution free, sediment free and "unstinky" that it has been since I moved here 28 years ago.

Re: “Rent Increases In Alameda Outpace Regional Hikes As City Debates Whether Policy Is Working

I think the real question is: Should a politically dominant, privileged group be able to vote people out of their homes for no reason and without due process? The City of Alameda council is deciding what are our true values.

Re: “Why Are So Many Rays Dying In Lake Merritt, And Sharks At The Berkeley Aquatic Park?

Ernest, thank you for your comments on Lake Merritt's improvement, a major civic effort under Measure DD. I think you slightly mistook part of the article. While people concerned about Lake M. may consider better management for the floodgates (operated by Alameda County flood control staff, I believe) the tide tubes are in Berkeley at Aquatic Park.

Re: “Why Are So Many Rays Dying In Lake Merritt, And Sharks At The Berkeley Aquatic Park?

Lake Merritt is neither a lake nor a tidal estuary, though it pretends to be both. It was simply as stream flowing into the Bay until the lake was dug out. It has always been a problematic body of water. For many years Oaklanders flushed their toilets into it, and threw junk, old cars, and motor oil into it. The current state of the Lake is by far the best it has been since it was built. This article appears to be blaming the City of Oakland is a very passive way for some perceived flaw (tide tubes) and ignoring the amazing work that has been done there. The "aeration fountain" is a joke. In order to properly aerate the Lake, you'd need to cover it with them. The end by the Pavillion and Glen Echo Creek are the far end the furthest from cleansing ocean water, and the most polluted and stagnant. This is not a fault of anyone, if you want to avoid this situation, drain the lake and let the creek flow again. Finally, the salinity levels of the lake vary by day to day, and all over the lake. This is the least conducive environment for any aquatic creature and one of the reasons the lake does not have a strong fish population. It's a semi stagnant lagoon or slough, to be precise. Prettied up by a nice name.

Very well written article, thank you. Nice to learn more about Lake Merritt.
The Environmental Academy at Oakland High bears recognition. O-High is one of the least recognized, most improving programs in OUSD.

Re: “Rent Increases In Alameda Outpace Regional Hikes As City Debates Whether Policy Is Working

The $3.7 million is a provable lie. Ask the mayor and Jim Oddie to show you the calculation to prove the number. They cannot. It is not provable because not one iota of analysis was done to back it up. The City spent over $300,000 for a consultant to perform a thorough analysis of the cost to administer the city's L1 rent ordinance, but not one red cent to analyze Measure M1. The consultant's report is on the city council web site, if you want to read it, or e-mail me and I'll send you a copy.

As them to show you the "survey" that lobbyist McConnell quoted from. It has never been made public and never will be because the distortions it contains will be revealed.

The Renters Coalition never stooped to lies and distortions, which were the stock and trade of the Realty Cabal opposing them. It's the only way the City-Realty Cabal could have won. And it was shameful.

Re: “Rent Increases In Alameda Outpace Regional Hikes As City Debates Whether Policy Is Working

You know, everybody always thinks that voters who don't vote for the same candidates/measures as they do are, "Brainwashed", "Misinformed", "Uneducated" etc.. ad infinitum. Not true. People just disagree with you, is all.

Re: “Rent Increases In Alameda Outpace Regional Hikes As City Debates Whether Policy Is Working

"... Alameda voters overwhelmingly chose the citys ordinance."

Almeda voters were swayed by a massive $766,000 misinformation campaign controlled by the California Apartment Association ("CAA") and funded by out-of-town realty interests.*

Prominent among the misinformation was the city's "$3.7 Million Lie," a grossly overstated estimate of the budget required to administer Measure M1 (the renters' measure.)

The $3.7 million cannot be defended. Not once ounce of analysis is behind it, yet Oddie wrote an Op-ed piece promoting it and allowed his photograph to be used in campaign signs and literature touting the $3.7 million lie.

Also prominent among the misinformation was the assertion that the renter group (the Alameda Renters Coalition) was comprised of "radicals from Berkely." Nothing could have been further from the truth.

The CAA's media campaign funded expensive newspaper ads and TV commercials touting the same lies and distortions. In the face of this media onslaught, how can voters be expected to make informed choices? They cannot.

Renters were not the only casualties of this dishonorable Realty exploitation of Alamedans; Democracy itself was slain on the steps of City Hall.

The City Council I think got it right. [Officials] struck a balance, said Greg McConnell, a consultant from Danville representing the landlords]..."

"Consultant"? Greg McConnell is a highly paid lobbyist who was allowed to speak on behalf of landlords at Council meetings without being identified as their paid lobbyist. He quoted from an expensive fake telephone survey (undoubtedly funded by Realty interests) that spoon-fed the same misinformation in the form of crafty leading questions. McConnell was undoubtedly behind this massive campaign of misinformation.

If voters knew the truth, they would have voted differently, but they were overwhelmed by lies and distortion.

Re: “AC Transit to Cancel Supplemental OUSD School Bus Routes

AC Transit is currently more interested in creating a FLEX service in other parts of its district to compete with Uber and Lyft for affluent riders with multiple transit options.....and OUSD students can go eat sand. Poverty is structural and decisons like this by the meat puppets at AC Transit illustrate it well.

Re: “AC Transit to Cancel Supplemental OUSD School Bus Routes

@Anthony Moore, "I believe there is still REGULAR service serving these schools" Sad to say there are no buses that serve the 2/3 schools that I know of and attended, Montera and Skyline, used the supplemental bus service exclusively to get to and from school. I could get by over a decade ago getting to Montera as there was a bus that got within 2-3 blocks of Montera, however that route was cut about a decade ago. Secondly, I would hate when the supplemental buses would skip my stop that went to Skyline, there were 6 of them 3 to each of the 2 lines that served that stop. The only option at that point was to take a bus near Merritt College and walk about a mile and a half uphill equivalent to 65 story building in height only to miss my first class entirely.

Re: “AC Transit to Cancel Supplemental OUSD School Bus Routes

Saint Mary's High in Berkeley also gets its own bus line. Private schools get traffic lights, while public schools, maybe get crossing guards, sometimes. On Lincoln Avenue in Oakland, it is only a matter of time until a speeding Head Royce parent runs down a Sequoia Elementary student. Head Royce has had 2 traffic lights and massive structural traffic mitigation put in place in the last 20 years. Sequoia gets a crossing guard when budgets allow.

Re: “AC Transit to Cancel Supplemental OUSD School Bus Routes

Re: the previous comment on "there is still REGULAR service serving these schools"

The "school" bus from my kids school to home comes on time and takes 20 min. The "regular" bus from my kids school to home is a combination of 3 buses that takes 2 hrs 40 min total - the most optimal combination - each way.

Additionally, even if I allowed my kids to spent 5.5+ hrs on bus every day, assuming all 3 legs of the trip come on time (a huge assumption), even if kids left from home at 6 am, and used regular buses, they could NEVER come to school by the start of school time. There is just NO way to get to school from many portions of Oakland by the time school starts. Again, we're talking about NOT EVEN A SINGLE day ever could they come to school by the start of classes.

Re: “AC Transit to Cancel Supplemental OUSD School Bus Routes

One thing conveniently left out of this article is that I believe there is still REGULAR service serving these schools. SUPPLEMENTAL service merely means that an extra run or two was added just for the students... a GOOD thing. HOWEVER, students would STILL be able to take the bus the school... just as I and many other OUSD students have done for decades.

Furthermore....AC Transit *DOESN'T* serve the general public? Isn't that why it's called PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION?

Re: “AC Transit to Cancel Supplemental OUSD School Bus Routes

"The dispute boils down to money." What else is new. The "dispute" in Oakland is consistently, and ever more so about money; those that have more of it, want even more and those with less, get less. Services and access to basic necessities of Oakland living - like kids taking a bus to school - are blithely overlooked in favor of money. It's despicable, but sadly it's another perfect example of Oakland discarding the needs of the needy. How about some of the "haves" stand up and help out these school kids and the OUSD? Hello Google Bus, Uber, etc...y'all could use some good PR.
