Re: “Protest Trump's Inauguration in Oakland, But Please Don't Be Violent

Been reading the comments flowing in and glad to see support for the rights of people to be protected from police violence vs the rights of Commerce to do as it pleases without protest, disruption or inconvenience of any kind.

As per George Lakoff's theory, society is broken into two factions. Those who want equality, an egalitarian society, and those who like authoritarianism. The egalitarians love freedom, equality, openness and sharing. The other loves order, control, and the certainty of uninterrupted business as usual by whoever is in power of authority... usually themselves.

I am glad to a part of those seeking equality and justice for all. We will continue to speak out and disrupt the status quo non-violently while the Praetorian Guard of the 1% tries to crush us with distortions, lies, trickery, confusion and gibberish meant to keep themselves as overlord. Like tRUMP has done. Bon apptit America!

"For the record: Neither I, nor APTP, have ever made a call for property damage."

what part of this is unclear?

some of the readers are playing stupid. cat made it crystal clear what the stance is on property damage.

Re: “Protest Trump's Inauguration in Oakland, But Please Don't Be Violent

"Overwhelmingly, communities of color in both West and East Oakland have said they do not want a torn-up Oakland. A busted up Youth Radio building or family-owned downtown business alienates us from the very people we say we are fighting for."

can you people read?

cat books clearly says that property damage is not the will of oakland communities that ATPT is fighting for.

Re: “Protest Trump's Inauguration in Oakland, But Please Don't Be Violent

Ms. Cat Brooks, I would like to take this opportunity to say that you are one of my sheroes and I am so proud and humbled by the great work that you are doing on behalf of our people.

I share your sentiments exactly and am so tired of the violence being perpetuated against our people being compared and conflated to destruction of property. I'm tired of our ancestors efforts being thrown in our faces as if their way of organizing is the only way, or as if the white people throwing it in our faces actually know anything about how or why they organized. As if we weren't at home digging through their words, searching for direction and finding in it exactly the direction we are going.

For all the people writing in opposition to Cat, I laugh at you. How amusing it is to see people sitting on their asses complaining to a revolutionary in the midst of a full and successful revolution that somehow you know better how this revolution should be conducted. Cat Brooks name will be written in the history books and your will too, but only when we quote your racist, hateful comments. I'm writing a book now about the movement and it's naysayers. so thank you for providing me with such rich material.

And Cat, I hope I get the opportunity to meet you someday soon. In Solidarity, Phoenix.

Re: “Protest Trump's Inauguration in Oakland, But Please Don't Be Violent

David Cohen: well said..

I mentioned that it was a slight of hand because it seemed to me it was out of step with journalism norms. When a journalist makes a correction, they normally own it and point it out.

Either way, it further highlights the ambivalence (or support) Brooks appears to have about vandalism.

Re: “Protest Trump's Inauguration in Oakland, But Please Don't Be Violent

Thanks to Michael Good for pointing out the change in the headline (appropriately deleting "vandalism"). However, I don't see this as a sleight of hand, but rather just a correction, for which the editor of East Bay Express deserves credit. As for Ms. Brooks, she may want to reflect on exactly what her thesis is, and focus on that core message when she next writes an opinion piece, rinsing out some of the distracting off-point rhetoric.

Re: “Protest Trump's Inauguration in Oakland, But Please Don't Be Violent

Interesting that the East Bay Express changed the title of this opinion piece -

Protest Trump's Inauguration in Oakland, But Please Don't Vandalize or Become Violent

Protest Trump's Inauguration in Oakland, But Please Don't Be Violent

Seems to me that East Bay Express has made a correction to reflect that Cat Brooks was so vague about vandalization. They must have realized she is not really coming out against vandalization - she seems to think it is OK. Remember, it was the "independent" protesters doing this anyway.

Very slick slight of hand by the editors..............

Re: “Protest Trump's Inauguration in Oakland, But Please Don't Be Violent

This reads like a lot of nifty phrases - "the people", "diversity of tactics", "the masses", "the struggle", etc. all pieced together to sound like quite the revolution. But, if you read it again, it becomes more clear that it is like gibberish.

The "movement?" What movement? Not described here. Cat Brooks seeks to "illuminate the clarity of our message" with no real description of what exactly the message is and who the people are behind "our."

She seems clear on who is protesting as part of the movement and who is not. No one else seems to be clear. The mobs that gather and wreak havoc - do the good ones have ID cards that say they are the real movement while those that are not the real movement are the bad ones. How can anyone know this?

Is ATPT a real thing with lots of members or participants or supporters that are clear on a message? Does ATPT have membership that can be the "we" that Cat Brooks referred to? Check out the website:

- no leaders or members identified. - "is a group of concerned and committed institutions, organizations and individuals" - none are actually identified to be members of this group
- seeks money
- is NOT not-for-profit
- seeks to end state sanctioned murder and violence against Black, Brown and Poor people. Gee, I did not know Jerry Brown sanctioned this! Or is it the Feds? Great buzzwords that make it sound like a vast conspiracy with some shadow group wanting to kill all these people. Really?
-writes and posts everything anonymously

Seems like this ATPT is nothing more than Cat Brooks trying to look like more than Cat Brooks.

I appreciate the clear and constructive thoughts from Kai Chang. Seek a way to do things differently. A way that will help send a clear message from fine, upstanding people that want things to be better. That want to be heard. Get press and publicity that will make people want to be more supportive.

Or, keep doing stupid things that create environments to be conducive to violence, blaming the bad on others, and facilitating people running amok in the night. Get bad press and publicity. Get less support than ever.

David Cohen's comment about the incoherence of a key paragraph is quite on point. One thing seems be clear - bodily harm (to protestors, not necessarily police) seems off limits and vandalism and property damage do not seem to be off limits.

For once, it would be nice if protesters stayed off the freeway so that no one gets killed or hurt. The "real" protesters can take photos of violent people and vandals and step up to identify them so the police can put them in jail. Protest their actions right there on the spot. After all, they are "independent" and not part of your deal.

Peaceful assembly please without excuses.

Re: “Town Business: Increasing Financial Aid for Renters Displaced Due to Code Enforcement

-What if the building is hazardously noncompliant with building codes b/c of the actions of the tenant, and the tenant is unresponsive to requests by the land-lord? Do they still get paid to leave? (If not, great way to extort).

-What if the tenant is richer than the landlord? (Even greater way to distort).

-What happens in the case of commercial warehouses that are zoned commercial (no variances) and a tenant illegally subleases. When & if the landlord finds this out, will the subtenants still be given protection, and the landlord still forced to pay illegal tenants to move?

I'm guessing/hoping not, but given our reactionary City and how general the article is written it makes it sound like no matter the condition all tenants will be protected, even if they're illegal and even if it violates zoning.

Re: “Jim Kaiser, Eccentric Champion of Incredibly Strange Music, Dies at 46

I am very sad, for Jim is one of the reasons Amoeba remains the best place I have worked for. Jim was always so interested in my music - Renaissance and Baroque lutes, unhip despite early music's self-appointed acronym - when I knew little of his, beside "experimental," and the high regard accorded him by classical musicians. Jim's was the all-inclusive mindset that every artist should strive for.

Re: “Oakland Congresswoman Barbara Lee To Boycott Trump Inauguration

Barbara Lee is extremely disillusioned on the subject of Russia interfering with the election. The entire intelligence community report is nothing more than baseless accusations and conjecture at best. There is no hard evidence of Russia interfering. No recorded conversations from the Kremlin to hackers and no digital forensics released on the hacking. The report even says and I quote
"Judgments are not intended to imply that we have proof that shows something to be a fact. Assessments are based on collected information, which is often incomplete or fragmentary, as well as logic, argumentation, and precedents.
They assess that russia interfered. This is not the same standard as proof that they interfered. This is more "weapons of mass destruction" fairtale like stories to mislead the public and make us less resistant to a future confrontation with Russia.
Oh and those sr intelligence serve at the pleasure of the president and they are non elected officials who do and are not suppose to make policy.

Re: “Oakland Mayor Schaaf Issues Order Intended to Improve Safety of Unpermitted Housing While Avoiding Displacement

The reason people live in improvised in law apts and warehouses is because it's cheap and that's all they can afford. The warehouses are only fire traps when you have huge parties in them.
I don't know how the city of Oakland thinks the owners of these properties can afford to bring them in compliance without raising the rents on the existing tenants. The owners are small time not the full time developers with lots of capital. My guess is once they get red flagged by the city and get a few 100-200 thousand dollar bids from contractors they'll just board up the place.
Another big big problem is the Oakland building department. Thy are EXTREMLY difficult and expensive to work with. If you haven't learned personally find out what they're all about by researching past EBX issues concerning the tiny fence a man tried to build on Yosemite St. off Broadway.

Re: “Town Business: Increasing Financial Aid for Renters Displaced Due to Code Enforcement

I agree with Steve. Once again in Oakland, it's ready, shoot, aim. The goal is not to make it comfortable for tenants living in dangerous, illegal, non permitted living spaces to relocate. The goal should be to make spaces where people live safe, as quickly and cost effectively as possible. The path to compliance depends on the goal. Having owners pay people to move out of illegal housing does not provide owner incentive or focus capital on solving the safety problems. Moreover, this proposal does not absolve the city of it"s legal exposure should someone else be killed. That exposure is brought on by it's incompetence and failure to inspect and require compliance with building and fire codes after having knowledge of violations. At the end of the day, it will be the City, with it's deep pockets, not the property owners who will ultimately pay the price of forthcoming lawsuits.
