Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
How is Alchemy Collective not on this list?
Wow -- congrats to Darwin and Ali for great reporting (and the EBX for great reporters)!
First Amendment Project
It's now February 20 at 11am pacific. I just visited the Polk awards web site. I see no announcements for 2017 and they don't seem to appear on the 2016 lists? What's up?
Congrats to Darwin and Ali! Their work this year, on the police story, public land and housing and education has been exemplary!
Now I can gripe a bit by the headline and the first line of this report -- because the reporter wasn't kicked out -- the reporter's first paragraph is contradicted by "I then requested the judge to ask the man again if he'd be OK with me staying on those terms. The man seemed OK with this, but I got up and left the courtroom, anyway." (GRRRR). So this headline and article kinda stinks. Reporters - the truth is not such that the ends justifies the means. Don't trick me, especially with an outright lie.
HOWEVER, this whole "media is the enemy" thing really pisses me off! Trump tweeted about it on the same day that this article was posted -- so one didn't cause the other. But the press are our eyes and ears -- NOT OUR ENEMY. If the public can be there, the press can be there and if someone is made nervous by the press -- that's a sign.
Have you ever sat through a public court proceeding? No? Thank God, because it's dead dull boring. It's like watching paint dry. "Due process" is important but not exciting, and so it's easy for the public to bypass observing such public proceedings because we're comfortable with the assurance that someone else is likely watching and if anything urgent or outrageous happens, we'll be alerted by someone who has more time than we do.
Even though they're open to the public, most court proceedings are not even attended by reporters -- but the fact that they can attend is a check and balance to nefariousness such as shortcuts through our rights, deals that ought not be made, and other bad behavior.
Thank you, reporter, for doing OUR job. We need you. We're on your side. We really appreciate it. This weekend, I counted 5 different ways that I pay money for news. It's valuable to me and I don't get mine for free. But please don't funge up the facts. It doesn't help.
Am Sherri from Texas. i just want to share my experience with everyone. I have being hearing about this blank ATM card for a while and i never really paid any interest to it because of my doubts. Until one day i discovered a hacking guy called Donard. he is really good at what he is doing. Back to the point, I inquired about The Blank ATM Card. If it works or even Exist. They told me Yes and that its a card programmed for random money withdraws without being noticed and can also be used for free online purchases of any kind. This was shocking and i still had my doubts. Then i gave it a try and asked for the card and agreed to their terms and conditions. Hoping and praying it was not a scam. 3 days later i received my card and tried with the closest ATM machine close to me, It worked like magic. I was able to withdraw up to $5000 daily. This was unbelievable and the happiest day of my life. So far i have being able to withdraw up to $30000 in one week without any stress of being caught. I dont know why i am posting this here, i just felt this might help those of us in need of financial stability. blank Atm has really change my life. If people support this type of investigative work, they should donate heavily to the publications that produce them. The East Bay Express produces great work, but has only ONE full-time reporter! The powers that be have a great interest in keeping their practices hidden and reporters have traditionally been the ones to put a spotlight on it. Unfortunately, investigations such as these are becoming very rare in a media climate driven by clicks, not substance. Support journalism!!
Is OPD sound asleep or simply so risk adverse and lazy that they investigate nothing until driven to it?
The end of this incident would be almost mind boggling except it's right in line with the total lawlessness here. The facts, as presented, are terrifying... No records of previous calls to the same address for gunfire incidents?
This isn't a police department... It's not even the keystone cops!
Viaduct? Vy not a chicken?
michael good: it looks like (as i thought) that there was nothing to fear regarding property destruction from any demonstrator or protester.
absolutely nothing negative happened as a result of days of protest.
hope that crow tasted *good.*
Excellent Beers, great hospitality.
Thank you for sharing this update.
Thank you for your persistence and resistance to targeted bureaucratic obfuscation. I hope the free and independent media survive and flourish - without them, democracy, the sovereignty of the people, is doomed.
"Do you crypto-anarchists really think..."
Epithet and poli sci update: the original crypto epithet was "crypto-fascist" spoken by Gore Vidal to W.F. Buckley Jr. Perfectly apt.
An anarchist is someone who doesn't believe in government, so whether or not gov't was aware of anything at all isn't really of much interest to an anarchist.
A fascist is likely to be someone who things gov't is god and, accordingly,
all-powerful and unquestionable. Something like W.F. Buckley Jr and the writer of the crypto- epithet above. Fascists or crypto-fascists.
I lived next door to a violent man for years, in the Dimond District, and called the police on him numerous times, but they never arrested him. When he turned the hose on me while I was gardening in my front yard, I called the police. He yelled obscenities at them when they arrived. They turned to me and said, "Yes, Ma'am, we see what you're saying." But then they turned and left and didn't arrest him. Later, he would sit on his front porch and yell at people and play music so loud that it could be heard a block away. The police would come and tell him to turn down the music. He would yell at them; they didn't do anything. They never arrested him. Several of the neighbors had restraining orders against him but when he violated those restraining orders, the police did nothing. Finally, his home was foreclosed on, but the sheriff had to get him out; he didn't leave voluntarily. I was inside the house after he was evicted, and from the smoky walls, covered windows, etc., it seemed pretty clear to me that there had been a meth lab inside. The whole neighborhood was just lucky he didn't start a fire.
Unless someone is killed by gunfire, Oakland cops can have very casual attitudes about all the firearm shooting that goes on every day in this town.
Where I live in Oakland cops have been called after gunshots have been reported, and if the cops actually show up, they can show little interest and have, for example, ignored cartridge cases all over the street.
There are many freeway ramps near us. Road signs are full of bullet holes. When we call in that we hear multiple gunshots (drive by shooters like to practice shooting on freeway on ramps because they are miles away in a few minutes), cops don't respond. In reality there's probably nothing they can do because the city of Oakland's electeds have closed minds about dealing with the realities of gunfire.
When we have contacted other city departments about the shooting on the on ramps, they say that they can do nothing. There's no money for CCTV. Don't you think that if we can ID drive by shooters when they are practicing that we might be able to prevent more actual drive by killings? This doesn't occur to city hall.
Mayors of nearby cities have petitioned CalTrans and Gov. Brown for help with freeway shootings. Some nearby cities have paid for the installation of CCTV cameras to help deal with the problem. In Oakland this amounts to thinking too far outside the box.
I wonder what they would do to someone who is a permanent resident, or someone on a visa. These people are very good at intimidation and they have all power, scary.
...And now, debris from the from the fire is found dumped illegally.
