Re: “Up in the Air

Wow, this movie is depressing...especially if you are unemployed, as I am. The movie doesn't seem to completely condemn the horrible line of work of the two protagonists. And it has a weird ambiguous ending. Has he learned something or not? Is he going to change his life?

Re: “Boyhood

Wow. I obviously missed something. I read all the glowing reviews and maybe my expectations were unrealistic. The concept is interesting and novel, but I can honestly say I can't remember being more bored. The kids just don't offer any charisma or acting ability.

I'm glad it wasn't any longer than it was.

Re: “Little White Lies

This was SO BORING! Avoid at all costs. The handsomest actor is immobilized in a hospital bed the whole time, buried under a tone of make up.

Re: “Our Idiot Brother

It's painful to watch a bunch of assholes. The movie consists of a bunch of assholes and one naive nice guy. The assholes mistreat the nice guy and the nice guy suffers but it all ends happily ever after. Painful, and boring, too...

Re: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2: 3D

Wow, I think I like the harsh negative critics better than this... whatever this is you wrote. You think it's the weakest entry in the series? Fine (although I absolutely do NOT agree with you and would love to angrily rant to you why), but honestly, you're a critic, review like a critic! Where's your evidence it's the weakest entry in the series? I'm a 14 year old teenager and even I wrote a better review in my website than you!

It stunk up our house, did not see chemistry between Drew and Justin, raunchy seldom works...

Re: “Somewhere

I wish the critic would give some practical information and say where we can watch this film in the East Bay. There is nothing more frustrating than wanting to see a film but not being able to see it. Since this is the East Bay Express, it seems like the subject matter should be about something in the East Bay. All I can find is a movie time in a San Francisco theater. I wish the critic would say which dates it's coming to an East Bay theater. Thanks.

Re: “Casino Jack

How on earth did Kevin Spacey, one of the best actors we have, get roped into this loser of a film? I was so excited to see it that I didn't even want to wait until it hit the East Bay and I traipsed across the bridge to the Embarcardero. I sat in anticipation for the whole couple of hours, waiting for the feeling that I was enjoying it. I never did. The movie never took off. No matter how well-done, there's just something off kilter about it, and not in a good way. It's hard to pinpoint the problem, or problems.

Terrible, terrible, utterly atrocious movie.

Re: “The Next Three Days

This is one of the worst pieces of trash I've ever seen. I've lost all confidence in Kelly Vance. It is unbelievable from start to finish and gets laughably worse over its unfortunately long running length. And it's violent, unncessarily. And we don't care about the characters. And there's no reason for its existence, either in the story or any sort of concept above that. It's simple trash and poorly done trash at that. On top of that the scenes that are supposed to be subtle (the original murder), meant to be nuanced (I guess), are simply confusing. For a better of review of this see the Chron or the CSM. It sucks bigtime.

Re: “Inception

nolan is overrated. memento is overrated. the dark knight is overrated.
that being said- leonardo is starting to look old. gonna have to start calling him leonard dicaprio. joseph gordon levitt was bad ass, and i now want to take ellen page out for ice cream. she was insufferable until i realized how sexy she is just now. juno is garbage, fyi.
but i digress. due to the success of inception we will be forced to suffer through more big budget unnecessarily self indulgent god awful rotten cinema. directed by that opiate for the masses of asses, nolan.

give me my money back. please.

Re: “Elle's Belles

Absolutely spot-on review of this repugnant film. I decided to see it based on the glowing reviews I had seen beforehand that compared it to Hitchcock and because I'd always had a soft spot for well-made French films given my earlier experiences with such character-driven delights as "Pauline at the Beach," "Diva," "Manon of the Spring" and the like.

If only I had seen your review beforehand. (I came across it only after seeing the film and being incredulous that no one called this overdose of misogyny out for being what it is). The only thing worse than seeing such an "I hate-you hate-we all hate" mess, if that's possible, is seeing a such a mess that hides its ugly interior with a pretense of being high art. Highly ridiculous and shameful, I'd say.

Re: “Oakland City Council Questions Need for Court-Appointed Police Monitor, Delays Renewing Contracts

To the East Bay Express: thank you for your coverage of this issue. As to our new police chief, I welcome her with open arms. But the press conference announcing her new hire seemed to focus exclusively on reform of the OPD and its culture. The Oakland Police Department is also supposed to provide Public Safety to the city of Oakland. Lost in that press conference was any discussion about how the new chief plans to do that. Where is the comprehensive Public Safety program we were promised by our mayor?

Re: “Kaiser Still Violating Mental Health Laws, Clinicians Say

@jamesweaver and everyone else: from personal experience yes you can go outside Kaiser with the ok from your psychiatrist or intake nurse. There is a catch, if you are going outside Kaiser and you require a referral to a Kaiser specialty group (trauma group, don't, intestine outpatient groups) as well you are no longer eligible for a referral from your doctor because the outside therapist does not share their records with Kaiser. Also their year long DBT GROUP is not run as it should be with the group members seeing interns for 1x a month visits. In 3 years I had 3 therapists brcause they were interns and left every august and new 1s cone in every September. Furthermore I waited 6-8 weeks in crisis to see a non intern phd, who asked me about my suicide plan I explained told her my preparation thus far my anxiety about having to start over ever year with an intern for her to say hours up, I don't have any more appointments for 3 month. Seriously u have a suicidal patient who is in crisis and that's how you end the appointment? I never went back

Re: “Building Engulfed by Deadly Oakland Fire Had Pending Habitability Complaints

I do not agree that individual code enforcement, Building or Fire Dept personnel should be held personally accountable for this obvious failure on the part of the City of Oakland. The people responsible are the leaders of the organization. They are responsible for the culture of work and the competency and precision with which that work is done or not done. It is obvious when people in every responsible department fail to do their jobs, it is the culture in the organization that is at fault. The city staff does not understand their individual job expectations or how they are connected to other departments. The people who are middle managers are inexperienced and unqualified for their jobs and for the most part, the senior managers are no different. The goal each day for everyone is just to clear your desk of today's problems as quickly as possible, without consideration of the long term impacts to citizens or potential legal exposure for the organization as a whole. It's not just illegal warehouse occupancy's. In the last year alone, we have seen the Mayor illegally trying to sell city property, while ignoring the law requiring affordable housing considerations and failure by staff to make simple decisions on fences or bus stops. If you can't make a decision on a fence or bus stop, how can you decide to close down a dangerous warehouse that displaces illegal tenants at risk? There is no leadership at the top.The Mayor has continued to hire and promote unqualified people to top level management positions. As Dr Phil would say, "how is that working for you"?
