Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

Is he doing this to attract arson and therefore have the house burned down to collect insurance?

Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

Imagine if the landlord spent as much time and effort protecting a human being as he has that Trump sign...sigh.

Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

This is a flagrant act of unlawful harassment, discrimination and even a borderline Hate Crime.

A lawsuit is definitely in order. If not (as an absolute last resort with nothing else left to lose) burning the property down in an act of civil disobedience.

Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

This sucks for all parties involved. For the tenant, it's impossible to find decent, affordable housing in the Bay. It would also suck to have to live in a place with a TRUMP sign stuck to it (yes, even Trump Tower).

While this new landlord sounds like a royal a$$, we have to remember a couple of things:
1. He does own the property
2. There is no right to affordable housing
3. When it's convenient for an entity (public or private), the entity will shut down an "illegal" or non-registered unit
4. Rent control is fantastic in theory, but it really does distort the market in a coveted location city
5. The current housing frenzy is part of a larger cycle that cannot be changed by one or two good-meaning rules
6. We all pay for rent control, and we, as a society, have to decide how and how much we are willing to pay
7. Real estate companies are like any other company - they're there to make money
8. The new arrivals to Oakland have generally been making it a much nicer, safer and more livable city (despite higher housing costs). I've only been here for 10 years and have seen enormous positive changes. We still have a long way to go, though.

Finally, I personally hate hearing statements about how, "I should be able to live here because I grew up here" or other arguments in that vein. Nobody has a right to live in any particular city nor should anyone be excluded from a particular city because of some accident of birth.

Re: “Art Gallery Grifter: How White Walls Owner Justin Giarla Scammed Artists Out Of Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars, Then Disappeared

What a loser piece of shit! Using people is bad enough but fucking with their art is deplorable. His ass deserves prison time for sure. Karma will follow.

Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

Jeff, you can't be seriously claiming equivalency between Hillary Clinton and a man whose VP wanted to make women hold funerals for their miscarriages and use tax funds to finance gay conversion "therapy". A man whose Cabinet picks include a man too racist for the federal courts; an avowed white supremacist, and a man who wants to send people to Guantanamo Bay for tweeting.

Or are all of those horrors OK with you because they affect people who you don't consider to be real people anyway?

Bio believably says: "always eyeing how to maximize rents, minimize expenses and squeeze out every dollar of cash flow." Time to work on squeezing out some human kindness, too. It's not about who Gorelik voted for, so much as it is about being a decent human being.

Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

How is the sign creating a hostile environment? What if it had been a Hillary sign, then it would be okay? As rational adults, we need to realize that just because someone has a different point of view or opinion, that doesn't mean they are full of hate. Real progress is made when people can share their opinions and work together towards a common goal. I mean no disrespect by this but just because you've rented an apartment for 21 years doesn't give you ownership rights.

Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

Untruthfully saying the city has declared the residence unlawful SHOULD be actionable, both by the renter and the city. The city should take legal action against this slime.

Hanging that sign is creating a hostile environment and intimidation. I'd say a lawsuit should be on order.

Other Gorelicks have been effective legal counsel for poor people in Oakland for years; this new-Jack Gorelick has his fangs out now that Trump has normalized hate and ignorance. This particular weakling is hiding his predation under Trump's trumphet call to all the idiots: "Here Ye, Here Ye, you don't have to hide your hate any longer!" Oaklanders, he hopes, will bow down to such treatment of its fragile citizens, but I suspect this idiot will rue the day he stuck his neck out to celebrate hateful derision!

Re: “On Class, Race, Culture and the Anti-Trump Movement

The left has rescued this country so many times from the right (I mean the wrong): Great Depression, Reaganomics, random wars. Really? You think Obama was given a chance to govern? No way. The friggin', selfish, manipulative, cheating, war-mongering republicans (cap left off purposely -- they don't deserve one) wouldn't give Obama an inch. Obama succeeded, as well as he could, with the obstructionist congress that he had. Trump supporters: a basket of deplorables, that we are ALL now riding in, to hell. Don't believe me? Look at his cabinet choices: a bigoted fake news chairman as senior counselor, corporate raiders for treasury, a previously fired general for national security, a climate denier for EPA, a billionaire charter school proponent for education, "It's fun to shoot people" secretary of defense, not to mention the many conflicts of interest of his business dealings. What a mess. Leave it to the left to rescue again. Only this time, the lefts will be way left of center. No more trying to meet the right half-way. There will be such a negative reaction to Trump and his extreme-right policies -- there will be a Bernie Revolution!

Re: “On Class, Race, Culture and the Anti-Trump Movement

During the campaign I really didn't get it when Trump yelled "I love the poorly educated"...I believe this group was not offended but rather elated that someone was listening...Are YOU listening Liberals?? We are they and they are we....
Great article Jay!

Re: “On Class, Race, Culture and the Anti-Trump Movement

generation of liberals and progressives narcissistically unaware of conditions outside their self-defined groups. It is a bit much for someone to say they are 99% when so many people don't agree. Trump spoke to many who don't agree with those who say they are 99% and those who are identified as 1%. The Progressives math is wrong and so many know it.
