This type of pick is called a "plectrum" or guitar pick. The left hand holds the neck of the guitar while the fingers pluck the strings. Different finger positions on the fretboard make different notes.
For sure, agreed.
I mostly agree with the previous comment, but I think her 'Springtime' album was still within bounds. In this latest album her voice is off the scale, and not in a good way. It`s either misguided pretention or a lack of confidence in her own enchanting voice."Less is more" ~Robert Browning
i dunno. does Holland play in that league? it's kind of hard to hear all those evocations of american experience in a voice that has become so tragically saturated over the years. it really WAS an intersection of many american genres, but somewhere after Escondida it's as if Holland felt the need to make her voice more...HOLLAND--ditching nuance for what is basically now a schtick. most tragic of all is that her song writing is awesome--dark, cleaver, and subversive at times. But that voice. So let's not get carried away here: jolie holland--jolie friggin' holland?!?--does not play in the big leagues as far as "evocations" go.
"Saint Dymphna," "the Love You Save."
Originality? Not much? You're out of your mind, Mark Keresman.
Definitely a darker album. They're also incredible live, I was just watching this session and it's awesome: http://www.baeblemusic.com/concert-video/Acme-Studios/Cults.html
Various Artists is another great review for a great song. Review: http://www.bitcandy.com/posers/thehungergames/songsfromdistrict12andbeyond
I don't understand anything about this article. Why the headline "Fuck Buttons"? (And why does it appear without being censored in mainstream media?) What is a "Slow Focus"?
Respectfully, I disagree. The album reminds me a lot of Donovan's work, another writer who relied heavily on cliche and repeated refrains. Viewed in the proper emotional context, i.e., the death of Segall's father and subsequent estrangement from his mother, the album is a pretty powerful emotional statement.
Even without that knowledge, the album's themes of loneliness and sense of drifting cut right through the clutter. I think it's actually fairly lyrically complex. And if sometimes the emotions are greater than words, I'm happy just to be there to experience the feeling.
It's a genuinely emotional and open record, from a guy I never expected either from. Give it another spin.
Good review for a good album! Excited to see her kill it live at the Wonder Ballroom on sept. 4th. I’ve heard she kills it in concert!
Great write up! the NPR write-up is really amazing! Shuggie is a legend!

Incredibly excited to hear these tracks. I first caught wind of Shuggie's rerelease from NPR at http://smarturl.it/ShuggieNPR and am now hooked. :)
